Ghostcrawler (a.k.a. Greg Street) was a game designer for Ensemble Studios (creators of the Age of Empires series) before he came to Blizzard. (Incidentally, he was known there as Deathshrimp.) In Age of Mythology and Age of Empires III, there were several relics and treasures named after the Empress Zoe (most notably her lost blanket). I'm not sure if it was ever settled who she was for sure, but Ghostcrawler undoubtedly had a hand in this item's naming.

The name Zoe has the meaning 'Life'

Archaeology solves the long mystery of who Empress Zoe was.

The Empress herself was a little known Dark Iron ruler. She was known for her love of dragons and kept whelps of many different colors around her.

The description Archaeology gives when you find her ring.

lol, Zoe was one of the few Byzantine empresses who was Porphyrogenita, or "born into the purple"

meaning.... she was epic, even in real life!
