Careful with the nails sticking out of the hilt though, that could bloody hurt.

On a seperate note, I kinda wish Mourning Malice was the 232 iLvl weapon, seeing as that one obviously looks so much cooler.

This weapon is very disappointing statwise. Not only does it have no crit, but it has both haste AND armor penetration. The majority of two hander classes find one or the other appealing, but not both.

This is a double edged sword for Unholy Death Knights in 3.3. (or in this case an axe).

On one side it has arp which was greatly increased in value with the revamp of Scourge Strike (now doing partially physical damage, and the shadow damage being increased based on how much physical damage you do).

On the other side it has haste, whose value plumeted when our rotation once again has several free global cooldowns. For an unholy DK, even agility atm trumps haste when it comes to statweights.

Note that with a 4 strength socket bonus, gemming it with Inscribed Ametrine is a DPS increase compared to Bold Cardinal Ruby (once again purely for the p.o.w of an Unholy DK). This due to the increase in value of crit in 3.3.

For an arms warrior this is actually BETTER than any two-handed Quel'Delar.

Why? I have no idea. But from switching poleaxe spec + this (With 20 ArP gem) to Sword Spec + QD I've lost about 600-1k (Situational) DPS. Which proves how underpowered sword spec really is compared to ploeaxe. Sad.

My goal on my fury warrior is to get two of these, use them for PvE until I replace them and then socket them for PvP. Those yellow sockets on them almost ache for some +20 resilience. But I have a feeling it'll be a while before I can get a second one, and even longer before I manage to replace them.

Might help if I was in a guild that did any sort of progression. >.>

I'm a dps warrior... i love this weapon. Droped in 5-man..so isn't hard to get. Great if you, like me, put a gem (i forgot the name of) that had +20 attack power and +10 critical strike. Plus i put Mongoose on it... and it is epic!

I'm pretty disappointed with this weapon look-wise. It's just... small. It looks more like a one handed weapon with a longer handle than anything. I have two on my warrior now and he doesn't look nearly as cool as he did when he was duel wielding two Edge of Ruins.

i just got this today on my frist run for my ret pally seems like a descent weapon dont know what to gem/enchant it with though i was useing Marrowstrike and Sword of Justice and this seems like a better choice to me as far as i know

I'd honestly like to say I find the swing speed of this weapon disappointing. Where am I supposed to find an axe at this level that has a swing speed of 3.8? Outside of raids, might I add.

for Ret Pallys: the two-ton hammer is better than this axe. armor pen only affects our white damage, not spell, making it almost completely useless to us, the crit on the hammer is much better than the armor pen on the axe.

I hope someone can explain to me why i aint seeing a dps upgrade when switching between these 2.

Gains: +34.7dps +35str +99crit rating
Loss: -1 haste rating -53ArP rating -1 Yellow socket -5 expertise (since im orc)

In my eyes this should be a pretty big upgrade.

How unlucky... i bet when i run this as... lets say shaman or priest it will definetly drop again on the 1st run. It of course dropped when i didn't expect the drop, every time i run PoS HC now i always hope it will drop again.

Im sure this makes a great item for fresh lvl 80 warr or dks because it is easy to access. (PoS H)
I still even use it today and its great for just about anything and you can minorly tailor this item to your use (yellow socket) I suggest adding that Kharma's Grace gem in it for PVP just because not too many items have yellow sockets. I dont PVE much but I dont really see any good cheap yellows for a PVE set, +4 str isnt much anyways stick to whatever you want ;).

DK tanks want this because A. it has quite a good amount of stamina+a gem slot B. the +str is good for keeping aggro. also, saying "when I am the one that really needs it"is quite a hunter-ish comment..

So um I just got the drop on this (beheader) for my ret paladin while using the above and the group told me if I didn't need on it, they'd beat me with it.

Like I was gonna say no to such a fantabulous upgrade. :P

I was only now comparing numbers (after vendoring the old one) and I don't understand how I made do with that sword for so long...

This was worth the 8-10 deaths in Pit of Saron heroic...well worth it.

Could socket it for expertise, coming from a DK tank.
Something like this Resolute Ametrine makes it a bit better for a DK tank. I'm looking to pick up a second one just for that express purpose.

Use it for my dps spec and love it.

Beyond this, other really nice options for a DK Blood or Unholy tank without venturing into raids are (my personal notes in italics):

Swords:
Quel'Delar, Ferocity of the Scorned rare drop, good luck
Quel'Delar, Might of the Faithful again, rare drop, good luck.
Between these two, tough choice. Straight up strength versus ap plus agility can be debated. My vote: personal preference. My only real gripe is that the agility version has armor penetration vice haste, and I don't care for haste on a tank weapon (parry mechanics)

Mourning Malice... great weapon. expertise is a big plus for a dk tank. nothing really wasted here. probably one of the top three DK tank weapons outside of raiding
Claymore of the Prophet.....
or it's Horde counterpart Greatsword of the Sin'dorei..... both are good "starter" tank weapons. nice balance, minus my dislike of haste. either is nice though and readily available with a little work (plus you make some gold in the process, which you will need as a tank)

Axes:
Edge of Ruin.... nice, hits hard. wish had better stamina
Colossal Skull Clad Cleaver.... great stats for a DK tank! str, agi, stam! .... but once again, here comes haste.
Tyrannical Beheader...... probably one of the top 3 choice for a DK tank outside of heroics. gem slot can be used to boost hit/expertise/defense as needed. Slap in a stam gem, and you probably have the best DK tank weapon outside of ICC for raw stats.

Maces:
Garfrost's Two-Ton Hammer.... probably better for DK dps than tank due to that nice red socket. At least there's a socket and you have some options.better for a dps than tank, but threat gen should be nice
Titansteel Destroyer..... the baseline. most will start with this.

Polearm:
Orca-Hunter's Harpoon..... nice blue socket! makes up for the meh stam on the item. great if you're not hit-capped or have hit concerns.
Marrowstrike...... has a nice yellow socket which can be used for hit/expertise/defense. in my opinion, one of the top 3 DK tanking weapons outside of raiding. Slapping in a stam gem works great too.
PLEASE NOTE: With both polearms, please take into consideration any hunters/druids in the group also. Both of these are genuine "Need" items for them, assuming they're lesser geared. If you're in a group without those, my opinion is this is of higher need to you than to a paladin or warrior as they both use shields or at least have the option to as a tank whereas you will never have that choice as a DK.

For all of the frost tanks...... different story. Again, this all pertains to a blood/unholy tank.

they seem to have toned down the glowing orange on the axe a bit in 3.3.3

the edge of the blade and the nails in the handle don't look like they've been pulled straight out of the forge, and the handle looks more like wood now. overall it's "nicer" looking in my opinion

Today, when I queue'd my paladin for Heroic Pit of Saron at an attempt to grab this piece of awesomeness, it surprisingly dropped - on my first try.

Elated, I hit need. Then the dual-weilding Death Knight did. Was a bit disappointed, but I didn't mind all that much.

Then the hunter hit need.

And won.

And left.

Geez, I cannot believe my good luck today. I'd been using iLvl 200 weapons forever, first a Titansteel Destroyer and then the Claymore of the Prophet. This morning the random dungeon finder put me in H:ToC for the first time, and I ended up with Edge of Ruin. Then tonight it put me in H:PoS for the first time, and I got the Tyrannical Beheader. Makes me glad I didn't waste money putting Massacre on the Edge of Ruin ;p

On the unlucky side, the Battered Hilt dropped in the H:FoS run right before H:PoS, but the priest won it.

I've tried for this countless times, including parties that just couldn't beat Garfrost. I've seen, then lost it twice in the last two days; first time to a retadin with an 1196 gear score (tank also need rolled), and today to the paladin healer. Seen it twice in 11 succesful kills of Tyrannus.

Mourning Malice is better itemized for DK tanks. When you are gearing up you tend to get lots of hit but not nearly as much expertise, and that sword has a TON. On the other hand, the Beheader has a bit more stam for survivability and higher base damage. I'm not so sure I wouldn't use Malice and keep Beheader for your dps set.

Orca-Hunter's Harpoon is another option. More avoidance, less stamina, and probably less threat than either the sword or the axe. Not something to steal from a hunter or feral druid but an option nonetheless.

Wrong wrong and wrong. Haste is one of the better stats now for Unholy DKs opting to go for frost sub-spec and using a proc-weapon, say... Shadowmourne? Alternatively Bryntoll (and normal version obviously) are great options.

The amount of procs/extra damage from auto-attacks (BCB, Necrosis, weapon/rune procs) combined with haste boost from Icy Talons (which stacks with WF, Imp. Icy Talons) makes haste very valuable stat for this spec.

From EJ, the stat weights are roughly:

Blood Subspec: Hit > Strength > ArP > Haste >= Crit > Expertise > Agility
Frost Subspec: Hit > Strength > Haste > ArP > Crit > Expertise > Agility
