The Block Value gems going from 10% to 5% gave them roughly the same block value bonus at level 70. Strength conversion going 20:1 to 2:1 roughly doubled the BV most tanks had, so overall BV provided by the level 70 gem (50-60) didn't change between 2.4.3 and 3.0.2

Even 5% is very powerful. Tankadins will almost always select this gem over the 2% armour gem. While the Austere Earthsiege Diamond provides more EH (32 stam > 5% BV) the 21 defence rating will allow an extra couple of stam gems elsewhere, so the real comparison ends up being the 5% BV vs 2% armour.

5% BV definitely wins for pally-tanks, as they block nearly every single attack. Warriors debatable. DKs and bears obviously take the Austere.

The Wrath version of Eternal Earthstorm Diamond, offering 9 more defense. This seems to be the ideal 'new tank' meta gem for Warriors and Paladins, helping to both get you uncrittable and increase your threat output, the primary concerns of tanks trying to gear up.

Overall, it's a fantastic gem for new tanks, but serious main tanks will prefer Austere Earthsiege Diamond due to the increase it gives to both factors for effective health, life total and armor total.

You should only select the Eternal Earthsiege Diamond if you are building a heavy block value build or if you out gear the encounters (or if you need the defense).

A general rule is that if you are blocking 20% or more of the incoming damage, you are better off with an Eternal Earthsiege Diamond. If you are not, the Austere Earthsiege Diamond is the better choice. This is something the player would have to gauge them selves, based off of which mob was going to be tanked. Keep in mind the defense rating on the Eternal Earthsiege will help mitigate damage over time through avoidance.

The Eternal Earthsiege Diamond will also slightly increase your single target threat generation, though I don't think any tanks are having issues with threat right now.

For the most optimal setup, you should have multiple helms, fit with both of these meta gems.

Plus, unlike block, it's reliable and works every time you get hit.

This may be true for warriors, but paladins will overcome this rather easily. Especially if they are gearing out for block value. WotLK block value gear is rarely seen without a decent chunk of block rating paired with it, and when combining high block rating Holy Shield, Paladins will easily see the magic number of 102.4.

Why? Do you keep cooldowns and trinkets off the table when raiding? If not, then there's no reason not to factor them in while picking a meta gem.

Note that this 5% bonus does not stack with the bonus from Shield Mastery or Redoubt. Percentage bonuses like these add up, rather than multiply together. You will have a total of 135% of your base shield block value, not the 136.5% you would have if they were multiplied.

So, the 5% is the percentage bonus is on the BV you would have had before the 30% bonus, giving you a bonus of about 3.85% of what you will currently see on your tooltip.

To be honest, I just dropped this from my tankadin.

The 5% BV is poor, It was providing me a total of 70BV with my standard set.
I've now switched to the stam and +2% armour gem.
I'll only consider going back to this for my BV set..

Fun fact: If you choose the 32 stam/2% armor gem over this and you look away from the block value and armor bonuses, the 32 stam, in comparison to the 21 defence, are superior by 0,5 stam worth of stat value.

By looking at the blue defence gem giving 16 defence, and then looking at the 24 stam gem, you can tell that usually the stamina gems give 1,5 times the stam of a defence gem giving defence. 1,5 times 21 equals 31,5, but the gem rounds this up to 32 stamina.

Now, you can debate on whether the block value bonus or the armor bonus is the best, but in terms of how Blizzard seems to consider defence in comparison to stamina, the 32 stam 2% armor gem wins out ever so slightly.

Don't make your decisions solely based on this though.

At 80, for a pally, it added 0.20% block total.. Worthless compared to other gems imo.

With 3.2 doubling the value of block value on all items, the value of this meta gem will go up considerably, especially for paladin tanks. Look to Elitist Jerks to sort out the math on it. ;)
