I'd say the chance of backfiring at level 85 is about 25%-40%.

When backfiring, it launches you straight up into the air for about 200 yards and then drops you. About 50% it will give you a parachute. If it backfires while tanking it can either bug/reset the boss, or it will just drop aggro on that tank and kill everyone else.

For engineers who plan to use this, I highly advise applying Flexweave Underlay to your cloak, and creating a hotkey to cancel the parachute buff that it gives, then using your own parachute at a much lower height to reduce the time spent falling. Just be careful not to kill yourself :)
