I believe this is only the third shield to be crafted with Blacksmithing, and the second to be made without any raiding required; the only other shields being Jagged Obsidian Shield which required mats from AQ http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=22198 and the Cobalt Triangle Shield which was also added during WotLK.

This should be a welcome relief to Blacksmiths wishing to craft themselves a nice, pre-80 tanking set.

As it stands now, using this shield with the full Tempered Saronite "set" would give you character the following stats:

15274 Armor
175 Block
+289 Strength
+526 Stamina
+319 Defense Rating

Comparing this to the Aldori Legacy Defender (considered to be one of the better shields available to more casual players)

- blue socket (and 2 def rating since everyone puts a blue gem in)
-15 hit

Overall, a possible upgrade (or even sidegrade) very early in the leveling process. It will help others catch up.

Compared to Bulwark of Azzinoth (the 2nd best shield available):
-284 armor
-10 block
+1 stam
-6 def
- proc

Overall, not as good as some of the best shields available so those raiders don't have to worry right away.

I managed to find one on the AH for 25 gold, which makes it an excellent choice from my kara shield.

Not as stylish as the shield of impenetrable darkness, sure, but the stats are worth it.

I got one of these on the AH and purchased the new shield spikes for it. I was very happy to know that when I have the druid thorns buff, plus retribution aura, the damage shield talent, and shield block up with these spikes on the shield, I am capable of hitting the target for upwards to 400 damage just for getting hit myself. As a prot warrior, I run instances with no CC, so I have about 3-4 guys on me every pull. just with these buffs on me I can put out more dps than the actual dps classes. that's not including my own dps. This shield is a great upgrade over the shield of impenetrable darkness.

This shield actually gives more AP than the items strength value shows. I was unequipping on my warrior and lost around 140 attack power. Maybe a hidden value by Blizz.
