Well I have found that the clams are in the same spot and respawn in a good time frame. Just run this circuit attacking the various mobs you encounter who could net you a few more clams.

For a hunter

Enchant with +85 Ap it`s even better then 2 Savage Cobalt Slicer enchant with + 50 AP each one.
More AP and even more crit chance.
And u can wear it in 70 lvl and Savage Cobalt Slicer u can wear in 74 lvl.
And is very cheap to obtain it

Quite solid for a BM Hunter while leveling. It took me roughly 30 mins to gather the clams along with doing the quests there. Worth it if you ask me.

this is a pretty legit weapon. have it on my ret paladin with +85ap,and i've had it since level 70. I'm now 75, and it's still the best weapon i've seen for a 2h, from both quest rewards and the AH. definitely worth the time to gather 50clams.

I have this on my druid. I got it as soon as they made polearms legal for druids to wield.

It's the best item you can get at 70 for a Druid, I am pretty sure, certainly one of the easier to get!

It only took about an hour collect 50 clams, possibly 2 hours including all of the quests. (I seem to remember 50 as the Siren's Tear was 100)

This is also a great weapon for Retribution Paladins, especially Blood Elves & Draenei because no racial expertise is foregone by using a Polearm over a 2H Mace or 2H Sword as it would be if your Pally were a Dwarf or Human.

EDIT: Agility is much less useful for Ret Pallies in Cataclysm as it was in Wrath when this comment was first posted.

Finished gathering the clams for this while doing the quests that were in the cave. Start with King Mrgl-Mrgl. Easy to obtain and a great item to have for a BM Hunter.

This is a pretty awesome druid/hunter weapon for the level you can get it.

If you do the quest line that King Mrrggrl (or whatever his name is) kicks off, you'll probably collect a couple of dozen clams just from drops off of the murlocs in the area.

Also, there are lots of clams lying around on the ground inside and outside the cave, which is a lot less bother than swimming around underwater collecting them.

By the time I'd done the quest chain in the area, I had about 60 clams just from picking up ones as I went by, no need to actively farm for them at all.

This is a great weapon for Hunters and can be gotten very quickly and easily once reaching Borean Tundra... in fact, you can pretty much make a bee-line for this one, so-long as you are lvl 70.

I enchanted mine with Major Agility... a nice overkill to an already great Hunter weapon (remember, Hunters think all weapons were made just for them... kinda-like Druids seem to think).

This item isn't bad for ret pallies either. It's only a little faster than the Axe of Frozen death and it has much more attack power and crit (once you take the agility into effect). I got this because of the good old days of auto-receiving Shadowstrike out of MC.

This is a must-have weapon for any Hunter that will take you through your low 70s in Northrend... I combined mine with Enchant 2H Weapon - Major Agility, and used it until I got two Savage Cobalt Slicers enchanted with Enchant Weapon - Exceptional Agility which even then, was almost a side upgrade. I finished Northrend with two Fang of Truth swords (also with Exceptional Agility enchant).

This weapon will last hunters (and possibly other classes) a very long time through Northrend leveling. Definitely pick this up ASAP.

I've got a 70 Frost Knight with 50 clams ready and I'm trying to convince myself it's better than the (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=38237) just because I like the looks better. (I'm just not a fan of axes. However, tridents and harpoons are both awesome.)

Good item for any class, took me about 15-20 mins to farm the 50 clams on my arms warrior. All you have to do is go into the deep trench like thing where the elemental is and farm them there. GL HF

Do's:
Use a flying mount to scout for the clams.
Scroll fully into your character and fly around the island searching for them.
Familiarize yourself with the clam icon so you know how to spot one fast.

Don'ts:
Do not bother grinding the murlocs. The XP they give is low and the drop rate is worse (Around 10%)
Do not fight murlocs near the shore, chances are you'll agro another 3.

You can loot/pick up clams regardless of completeing the quest where you are required to hand in 5.

Gathering the required 50 clams while the quest "Winterfin Commerce" is still active will cause the clams to sparkle as quest items. This is very helpful, especially for the clams that are almost completely buried in the mud.

Although the item information makes it obvious, I figure it can't hurt to specifically comment this has no sell price - I was cleaning out some unused cosmetic/costume stuff and discovered this fact. At least I'm only out 50 clams!

For those people who do not know, this weapon used to cost 100 clams.
And if my memory serves correctly, this weapon did not have stam but had tons of agi and AP, I beilve, making it a superb weapon for hunters.

Due to lack of superior(blue-quality) feral tank weapons in the beginning of Northrend zone I guess Blizz decided to change the stats.
(Easy-to-get blue rewards can be get from Hellscream's Champion, where you can see that there is a hunter's primary weapon-gun, but no feral weapon)

As it only cost 50 clams now I highly recommend any feral druids without heirlooms to get this weapon. It's a much easier farming than you think and this weapon will last you a pretty decent lvl.

A druid can pick up the clams while still in flight form, so its just an easy couple of minutes to get the required 50 clams. Weirdly enough though, it has no sell price.

The clams seem to be easier to get if you don't hand in the initial quest for 5. I can confirm that it only takes 30 - 40 mins to collect 85 clams. The quest = 5, Polearm = 50, and you may as well get the leather head piece = 30 as it has some nice stats for that level.The polearm will probably not be replaced for 5 -6 levels. The murlocs drop the clams as well so there is no point avoiding them. Note..there are some clams already open and you will not be able to loot them. You wil get a message saying "you are too far away" or something similiar. The one which will replace this is 獄卒短棒 which drops from last boss in The Violet Hold and you need to be Level 75 to equip it.

The last post on this was 7 years ago, and I have checked the vendor multiple times with nothing.
Either it is a very long and odd restock time or its been pulled from the game.

My subscription expired a while back, but today I decided to see what new stuff I could do while unsubbed. I was happy to see that it is a lot.
But one thing you can't do while unsubbed is buy this polearm. The item stats say "iLvl 33, required level 20" But after you collect your 50 claims and try to buy it, you get the unexpected and rather rude message "you must be level 27 to purchase this item."
Thanks for wasting my time Blizzard.
