The (sold by my namesake) is purchased in lots of 5 and stacks up to 10. It's a consumable that can be thrown from your inventory and retrieved by whatever pet you currently have summoned.

Surprisingly, the ball doesn't wind up back in your inventory—it simply vanishes from the pet's mouth when the pet returns. However, it provides a very cute effect and an amusing trick that any vanity pet can learn. :-D

Here are a few unusual interactions I have noted (in addition to the ones listed above):

Cockroach: ~~Does not play fetch.~~ Was recently fixed to play fetch.
Disgusting Oozeling: Plays fetch; carries the ball on top of his/her head.
Ethereal Soul Trader: Plays fetch, despite being humanoid.
Egbert: Plays fetch, but only when he isn't running around with A.D.D.
Father Winter's Helper: Does not play fetch.
Peanut: Plays fetch, but you cannot see the ball when he is returning it.
Peddlefeet: Plays fetch; carries the ball in his mouth despite having opposable thumbs.
Sinister Squashling: Plays fetch; carries the ball in his mouth despite having arms.
Spirit of Summer: Plays fetch; carries the ball on top of his/her head.
Tiny Snowman: Does not play fetch. That's to be expected, though, because he can't get off of his frozen behind to follow you around, either.
Tranquil Mechanical Yeti: Plays fetch; carries the ball in his/her mouth despite having opposable thumbs.
Winter's Little Helper: Does not play fetch.

Any pet, if it is in the process of doing its ambient action (wandering independently, sniffing the ground, killing a critter, etc.) will not play fetch. Also, some pets will refuse to play fetch on certain staircases; I guess not all of them learned how to climb them. Because of this, please try to play fetch a couple of times in a couple of locations with your pet before reporting it as a non-fetching pet. I'm looking for more unusual pet reactions, so please post if you know any and I will update this comment. Thanks!

My Stinker will play fetch..he carries the ball on top of his head. Interesting to note, if they are on a leash to start with, they go off the leash to play fetch and then stay off the leash.

Pets that are capable of full flight, such as the Proto Drake Whelp, are able to play fetch, and even can get the ball from places ground pets can't.

Chickens (at least the Ancona Chicken), the Baby Blizzard bear, Snakes, Moths, Dragonhawk Hatchlings, Prarie Dogs, Rabbits (including the Spring Rabbit), Birds (including Owls, Tickbirds, and Parrots), the Mana Wyrmling, Frogs, the Wolpertinger all play fetch as of 3.1.

The Winter's Little Helper still does not.

A thing I noticed was that if you throw it too far (I attempted max range) they won't fetch no matter what.

Broke randomly on this most recent patch. Pet no longer "fetches" the ball, no matter what companion you use.
