Is this too slow for an ideal Sword'n'Board tanking weapon?
Warriors generate a higher percentage of their damage with their shield attacks compared to Pre-Wrath, but I fear this is so slow that it would have a negative impact on fitting Heroic Strikes into a tanking rotation.

A slow tanking one-hander would suggest the intent was for Death Knight Tanking as their strikes are weapon damage dependent.

Good for solo grinding as a prot warrior. Wouldn't use it in instances though.

Currently using two of these on my Death Knight, with great succes - Spamming heavy Rune Strikes, and the 15% from Frost adds up with good offhand damage.
- Without having a bad damage from strikes.

Excellent warrior tank weapon, in my opinion.

Devastate is an instant, so weapon speed isnt a factor in TPS generation... but... damage range is a factor in TPS generation.

also, Heroic strikes crits are non normalized, so a slow weapon favours a huge crit... which goes well with incite.

this could be a good DK tanking weapon for frost spec since you can get a slow main hand and a fast off hand both with defense rating.

I do believe this sword would be idea for a death knight who is dualwield tanking (usually because they need the defense they don't >currently< get on their 2h weapon). If I remember correctly, there are a number of attacks that do damage based on weapon damage so having a slightly slower mainhand would help for those attacks.

That being said, as a warrior I would rather have a faster weapon, though considering this is much better than my quest tanking mace from zul'drak, It's still a huge upgrade.

If you have deep wounds as a warrior tank, this will give you much bigger bleed ticks so that's nice to see. It just stinks waiting for your next cleave if you're picking up multiple mobs.

You can DW 2 of this baby if your a frost dwing Death Knight :) it may come in handy till you get the Red Sword of Courage from Utgard Pinnacle

For a slow weapon like this, use Seal of Righteousness ad you'll get a bigger bang out of Hammer of the Righteous. When tanking multiple targets, you not only get the holy damage of HotR, but also an application of SoR with a slow weapon. This makes for more threat generation, which makes for a better tank. When tanking a single target, it still works well, but only equal to a fast weapon and SoC/V.

If you use a fast blade, Seal of Corruption/Vengeance is better, but you don't get as much of a bang out of HotR, but you get an application of SoC/V on all targets, which does more damage than SoR, and it gets refreshed and stacked up every 6 seconds from HotR.

in other words, you can do your best whichever weapon you choose, but you have to know how to make the best of it.

As of 3.0.8, this will be a key weapon to have for DW Death Knights while tanking. The KM changes will only mean that having a slower MH will now yield you more DPS. This weapon will be great for producing some decent Frost Strike hits. Also, with the defense sigil and two +defense 1handers, the defense cap is a lot easier to hit.

the drop rate on this sword is terrible i have done UK many times and its never droped....

oh well just have to try for the one from UP

What is with these tank swords these days? I have never seen one drop from reg HOL OR heroic UK and UP. i have done them multiple times too. Done UK about 17 times and never dropped.

I finally got this after about 23 times doing that boss on my protection warrior. Its not as good as others because of the speed. I cant do heroic strikes as much.

Of course, with the changes to Vengeance scheduled for 3.2, paladins will once again (slightly) prefer slower weapons on bosses. Since the strike after the 5-stack of the DOT is

based on weapon damage
not normalized, and
inflicted by instant attacks,

the slower the weapon the harder the seal will hit and the greater the threat generated. Which makes a lot of sense when you happen to be doing the hitting with your shield, but whatever.

As a warrior I'm no longer opposed to "slow" tanking weapons.

Devastate now does 100% of weapon damage instantly, with this baby it's gonna hit real hard after a 5 applications.

Cleave too.

Actually, now that 3.3 is live, with Rune of the Nerubian Carapace and the changes to allow Threat of Thassarian to affect Rune Strike, this is no longer true. Dual Wielding can now generate as much, if not more threat than a 2h. In addition, it gets slightly more defense from two applications of Rune of the Nerubian Carapace than one application of Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle, gets better Killing Machine procs (even after Proc-per-minute normalization, which nerfed it, but it's still better than a 2h), and needs less +hit to cap special attacks due to Nerves of Cold Steel.

Furthermore, due to itemization quirks, it's easier to get a pair of slow tanking one-hand'rs than it is to get a slow, tanking 2h'r. Slow tanking one-handers are rare, but they're out there. Most starting level tanks will end up using a slow DPS weapon at first, and possibly again along the way due to itemization gaps, but they have the potential to itemize slow tanking one-handers.

On the other hand, tanking 2h'rs don't exist. At all. There are a couple defenisive ones out there due to random enchants and the like, and a smattering of quest rewards, but up in the progression latter they don't exist. The best you can do is find a DPS 2h that happens to not have any useless stats on it, and slap Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle on it.

Lastly, dual wielding is cool. Come on, don't sit there and tell me that a nigh-invincible engine of destruction tearing into his enemies with a pair of wickedly sharp blades isn't infinitely cooler than some hulk swinging a polearm around. But i suppose that might be personal bias....

I should note, though that DWing requires a slightly less flexible talent spec, and as a result loses a couple of points here and there in threat generating talents. Time will tell if this trade-off is significant enough bring DWing down to be equal with 2h'ing, or perhaps less.

I'm fairly sure of my logic on this subject, but if there's a flaw somewhere in there, feel free to correct me. If not, then it looks like DW is finally viable again.

I can't wait to try out a pair of these puppies.

i actually have this and the cloudstrider's waraxe. nice to have options depending on the situation. make a weapon swap macro to switch between the two.
