It's the turn-in item for one of the early Netherdrake rep daily quests. Need to collect 35 of them from the creatures in the Nethermine south of the fel orc camp on Netherwing Ledge in Shadowmoon.
I've only ever had one "drop" from a creature, so far. Majority of them were skinned, mostly from the flayers in the mine, but also got a couple from the ravagers running around the mine.

Drop rate for this is suck. My bank and bags overrun with with Fel scales, Knothide leather and Crystal Infused leather. Drop like 20%.
I'm not sure but seems like that Skining is most hardcore gathering profesion in Netherwing rep farming.

Drops off: Any Flayers on ledge (drop same in mine and outside), Ravagers (drop same as Flayers or even more high), worms in mine (don't sure about drop. Farming worms only for Nethermine Flayer Hide looks strange...), Rays (most low drop rate).

I found the easiest way to get these is to just follow others around the mines. There is almost always a large group of players killing the flayers, and most don't skin. That's how I get most of mine. A little ways in from the entrance, you can actually climb the hill on the left and walk though the small opening in the fence for a shortcut to the Flayer area of the mine. Work your way to where other players are killing (especially nice if you can stealth past living Flayers - so Druids and Rogues have an advantage here) and skin away.

Also, the Bursters (giant worms) seem to have a much better drop rate on these as well (the flayers are actually a little pathetic, which is funny since they are supposed to be Flayer hides). A lot of the time if you just follow the mine cart tracks into the main room, there will be players killing the Bursters and you can get those too. But there are significantly fewer of them as there are Flayers, so this won't get you as much.

And remember you can take more than the 35 need for the quest. If you find a bunch of players leaving a lot of nice skinnable bodies for you, might be a good idea to stick around and keep building up Flayer Hides for the next day's turnin.

The drop rate on these is such that you must kill (around) 100 flayers in netherwing ledge to satisfy the daily quest for these. I spent over an hour in the mines killing flayers and sludges for crystals, but didn't come up with nearly the 35 skin requirement for the quest (I had about 23 after an hour and a half of continuous flayer grinding). I suggest bringing a friend who is also a skinner so you can work together to make sure every flayer is killed and skinned quickly (don't forget to set Free For All looting before the skinning party)..

Drop rate is still bad. I've been farming the place at lv. 80 as a BM hunter + Gorilla and I had to fully clear the mine at least twice to get all the hides.

if your lucky, sometimes another group will be farming the mines, and if they don't have a skinner, u can just come in and skin all of it. I'm lucky these days, to find Death knight groups Aoe farming and letting me skin their kills.

Note: the big payoff for reputation are the eggs (250 per each), with each one being the equivalent or near equivalent of some of the daily quests. While searching for them, killing beasts means you will likely end up with far more hides than you need (though not quite as bad as the crystals: when I finished and had my drake, I had 720 crystals - with many thrown out - and 94 hides). In other words, when the dailies are done, swing back through the mine at off hours and look for eggs - any hides (or whatever you have to get and can store until the quest officially begins the next day) save you time the next time.

As of patch 3.3, the droprate on these seems to have gone up. My rep grind started before 3.3 and I can say that in almost 2 hours of solid flayer-flaying, I had barely half the number of hides I needed. I would say I was lucky to get one hide in 50 kills. After the patch went into effect, the drop rate is noticeably higher and I can now get enough hides in a few rotations of the mines and seem to get a hide, on average, every 5-10 kills or so.

It could be luck or coincidence, but to me, it does seem higher. Hopefully others can confirm this.

I had a horrible drop rate on these. Started my grind on my shammy today. The last hide took 29 kills to get. Ridiculous.

just started this on my shaman. the drop rate sucks. but on the bright side you get some green drops and wait there is no bright side. the drop rate sucks and i have been skinning and in 30 minutes i have only 21 to show.

After about 30 "black blood of Draenor" (Slime Creatures) and 6 or 10 "nethermine buster" (Worms) i only got 2 "nethermine flayer hides" from the slime coated bags, and sence knothide leather is probly worth atleast 50gold on ant server id stay with skinning, the deop rate seems to be around the same and the leather can be used to make items while lvling your profession or just soild for a blunt some of gold, where as slime bags only have a few gray marked items witch even stay of are probly worth only 3 or 5 gold at BEST all together!

"Bring a friend" as you said is a good idea, but VERY unlikly to happen! after spending a hour grinding bests (Flayer worms needed for this are beasts as most skin-able are) unless they really need the leather for there profession is only likly to get somone to do this with you once, even when i have friends wanting the drakes we always seem to do the quests at differnt times as there all eazy to solo Quests, prehaps tell your friend that youll give them all the leather collected while doing the Quest for helping you may get you a better responce, i dout it but worth a try, and even if it dose id rather keep the leather for my OWN profession and money made from selling the items made from the leather collected during the quest or soild leather while doing this quest.

i found best way to collect "nethermine flayer hide" was to gather between 6 and 10 flayers and kill them all at once, ive yet to see any "nethermine flayer hide" drop from loot, BUT from a group of 6 or 10 i got between 1 and 4 or 5 "nethermine flayer hide" almost everytime (posted after cata) on my lvl 76 pally, but they are around lvl 70/71 so i dont know if id try this on a none heal class toon.

This quest is almost worth skipping if you can find a Netherwing Egg to supplement the rep in its place.

You can still turn these in after reaching exalted but you will only get 4g40s. They are not soulbound so you can sell them on auction to others that are questing. :)

The drop rate when you have the daily quest in your log still seems completely bugged. After accepting it, I maybe got 1 hide for every 10-15 kills, so I decided not to bother doing it.

After abandoning the daily quest the drop rate jumped to about 1 hide every 3 kills so just keep in mind you need 35 hides for the quest, do all the other dailies and murder / skin flayers as you go, and there's a high chance you'll have all of them by the time you're done.

Regarding the eggs, if you see one in the mines, stop looting / skinning / whatever you were doing and go get it, with the shared realms there is often other players around and it can get competitive. Also if you can hold on to them until you can give them in with the Darkmoon Faire carousel buff and / or Timewalking BC reputation buff active, you get a nice bump in rep.
