Ok I just want to make a quick comment about this. I tried the mine, and I tried the surface. Indeed, the mine is easier because you don't have to watch for those lvl 72 elite outside, however, the Netherwing Rays have dropped so far for me motes of mana at a ~50% rate, about the same rate as the crystals.... so this means about 3-4 primal mana while farming for this quest. This is something to consider, especially if you are herbalism and you have to get the flower quest too .

If you are a hunter, Feign death is your friend on the surface when you aggro those elites.

Just a quick little heads up..

If you have any Netherwing Crystals in your bank at the time of the quest, they will count towards your crystal count in your quest tracking. So, if you go back to turn the quest in and it says you don't have the required 40, this is why.

This happened to me a couple of times and was a little frustrating. It probably won't effect most people, but for those who it does, I just thought I'd save ya the trouble ;)

Well, if you made it this far reading, you now know that there is no one great area. It has varied for me all week. Get what you can during dailies, then finish in an area beneficial to your professions or easier for you to kill.

That said, sludge are a pain, but grind them for crystals one day and you should get http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=11081 for an easy 7 and a half gold.

The big elites don't make my screen shake around and I still get killed by them. I followed one for a few minutes in the air and on the ground, but the only thing that shook was my skull when he hit it with his giant weapon. The only way to tell if they are coming is to look around every five seconds. I geuss one of the many patches since Murderdoll's comment turned off the shaking.

i suggest as a mage to pull about 3-4 black sludges in the caves at a time and aoe them down. really efficient for me

It seems the drop rate has been increased on these. I brought my death knight there and every mob dropped 2 of them versus pre-3.0

Does anyone else think that you should be able to hand these in at any time, not just on a daily basis, because currently I' ve been trying to gather up rep for my netherdrake and whilst getting the Nethermine Flayer Hide, I have gotten over 300 of these crystals and they are just sitting in my bag taking up inventory space...
Anyone else agree?

Interestingly enough, you are unable to sell any excess of crystals you have when you're done (Exalted).
I got so many dropped while grinding for rep, that over 600 where still in my bags. All I could do with them was to destroy them :-(

Everything drops these in the mines at a 100% rate for me. At level 80 I got around my 250 on my feral druid in catform the whole time, total of about 30 mins. I also went ahead (since I have skinning) and got a ton more hides for the next few days.

So... about these crystals... Every comment seems to be about the "drop rate" being intolerably low or at the very least dissatisfying. I've just reached 20882/21000 rep, just waiting to hit exalted, with no daily quests to go and no motivation for grinding out the low probability of finding yet another egg (for the record, I made an average 1.5 egg per daily quest run; and I'm fast at those, by now), so here's me contemplating what on Azeroth I can do with those 500 (five hundred) soulbound crystals I have stacked up in my inventory right before I real in my little drake. Apart from the 100 or so Nethercite ore... Seriously, short of being a moralizing pally, the crystals drop at a stunning rate in the mines off of any creepy crawlers down there. Trust me. I'm willing to wage 500 of them silly crystals on anyone who begs to differ. This chain is very doable for the patient and diligent. That's all! Thanks. Bye!

Ok. As of patch 6.0, the drop rate on these things (at least for me) is IN SANE. I've been doing dailies for about a week (give or take a few off-days) and so far I have collected 1187 Netherwing crystals even WITH turning in the quest. Also, the quest is available to Horde AND Alliance as a daily (I am a Blood Elf Mage). I honestly wish there were something else to do with these crystals besides turn a few in for a daily.
