They are in fact a brown colour. Definitely not dissapointing to go along with your black bloodfang helm from shadowmoon:

That being said they are a gorgeous set of shoulders and for a rogue that never got the chance at bloodfang spaulder - the nicest looking shoulders in the game...They certainly are a treat.

Pretty disappointing compared to a blue you can wear at level 66 http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27434 .

Assuming equal quality gems and matching gem/socket colors, you get:

Mantle of Perenolde (2x red +16 AP gem)
hit rating: 23
critical strike rating: 23
attack power: 52

Bladed Shoulderpads of the Merciless
hit rating: 13 (socket bonus included)
critical strike rating: 18
attack power: 54
+ two yellow/orange/green gems, which give you 2x +8 hit or crit if you go for yellow ones.

So combined hit+crit and AP would be like:
Mantle of Perenolde
hit+crit: 46
AP: 52

Bladed Shoulderpads of the Merciless
hit+crit: 47 (socket bonus included)

These shoulders are just the best. I try to stay above 10% hit, just to ensure I don't start gimping myself on AP and crit, but you can get so much hit out of these it's fantastic.

On top of that, our tier 4 shoulders are dire, so these really are the best we can get before tier 5.

This chest is part of a "set" of items that have no connection to each other other than that they all share the same design style and color. Its basicly a reworking of the tier2 set, but now in brown and white.

I think its such a cool looking "set" that I would probably wear it around town despite having stuff that is better like the Tier4.

These are actually the best feral tanking shoulders before T4. While the armor is not green, it is more armor than most of the green ones give (see the PvP armor). Especially considering +hit is rare on high armor items.

Availability of good plate shoulders is rather scarce for Fury warriors. This is a great pair of shoulders for any fury warriors.

I received them after our 2 main rogues got their's 1st. I can't foresee replacing this for a long time, only perhaps with Ripfiend off Kazzak.

Wearing this as an Enhance Shaman, much better than the Mail sholders from Opera, and the best so far for a guild that hasn't managed to scrounge up the numbers for Maulgar.

Added in two +8 Hit Gems, and the only upgrade I see is Pauldrons of Primal Fury from Nalorakk in Zul'Aman (Again for a non-25 man guild).

Now, I did some number crunching a bit an came up with this question; should one use these shoulders instead of the Netherblade Shoulderpads (T4)?

Assuming these are not enchanted from Scryer/Aldor enchantments:

BSotM: Both sockets contain +8 HR gems
300 HP
58 AP
~2% Hit (.7% more than NbS)
~1% Crit (.3% more than NbS)

NbS: Sockets: 8 agi/ 8 HR
380 HP (80 HP more than BSotM)
80 AP (22 AP more than BSotM)
~1.3% Hit
~7% Crit

So, considering a PvE setting of course, which would be more useful? Personally, I'd use the BSotM for the greater HR and CR. 22 AP and 80 HP isn't going to be missed much in my opinion.

If you're looking for these for transmogrification, there are also 森林之風肩墊 which have the same look and drop off of 館長, also in Karazhan. So you have two chances at this shoulder graphic if you do a full clear.
