This is undeniably one of the best hunter weapons available at this level. It gives you a whopping 61 total RAP, 70 if you have the Careful Aim talent. It's slow speed also means huge Raptor Strike crits.

All you need to get it is Friendly rep with the Sporeggar, which is extremely easy to obtain by collecting Glowcaps (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24245#00zc) and turning them in to Msshi'fn (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=17924).

For leveling to 70 you cannot beat this weapon. Even at lvl 70, it has the best balanced hunter stats in the game that I've seen, beating out other higher level items like the http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29329. High agi/sta items like the Quill might be better for pvp, but while grinding out 70 a balance of stats this good shouldn't be passed up. Achieving friendly with sporregar is as easy as doing all the quests they give, takes no more than an hour or two. Sadly, this weapon doesn't look terribly exciting, but the stats make up for that deficiency.

Indeed, this wep is good for lvling. Using it on my 66 hunter (Patch 2.3) with Aspect of the Viper, never get oom, which is extremly good for a BM hunter.

I would say, keep this wep until you get either http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31291 (Crystalforged War Axe) or http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27903 (Sonic Spear)

I just got this weaon with my 64 Hunter and combined with this, and Aspect of the Viper I can grind non-stop.

100% recommended as a Hunter weapon!

Tbh, you shouldn't have aspect of the viper on all the time. Just get full mana and switch back to Hawk.

I had always taken this polearm as the weapon for my hunters (3). Last night I went to do the quest again with my latest hunter (Survival specd). I took the staff instead and here is why:
1. The Agility and the AP are the same
2. The Stamina is the same (300 health)
3. The only difference is trading 20 Intellect for 20 Hit rating
At this low a level Hit is a lot harder to find than Intellect. For a MM build, Intellect is a lot more important than it is for a Survival spec (MM getting AP from Intellect). With the staff equipped it is 2% to Hit. With some other quest gear, at level 62 I have almost 6% hit on an even level mob. Basically, I won't miss on even levels. I would rather have the 2% more hits (and more damage) than the 300 mana. Missing is wasting mana since you get nothing for your miss but still use the mana. Just as Hit capping is so important for end game raiding, I feel it plays a very big part in leveling since a lot of the time we tend to attack things a level or two higher. Without Hit, you are really missing close to 8-10% on higher levels. You can find Hit on items around level 65 and up (trinkets, cloaks, etc) but at this level it is hard to find. Give some thought to 300 mana or 2% more shots hitting and saving the mana to make them. Since BM and Surv builds are putting points into crit in the MM tree at this level, we tend not to take the Focused Aim (3% to hit) and are using Lethal Shots (5% crit) for our points. So if you are low on hit, this is a good way to start building it up.

Hunters post-Cataclysm should definitely pick up the staff instead of this weapon, as they no longer need Intellect.
