When you use the item its a channel type spell, a green beam will come from your hands to the little gas cloud and it takes about 5 seconds.

Zangarmarsh has green gas clouds that give motes of life, Shadowmoon Valley has yellow gas clouds that provide motes of shadow, and i believe the steamvaults, slave pens, and underbog also have green clouds that give both motes of water and life. Anyone know if there are any other places to find "outland farts"? This contraption is really usefull for lazy farming!

I saw a purple gas cloud in netherstorm by tempest keep, not sure what it gives, i never ended up making this thing.

If you've already done this quest and dropped engineering, then re-acquire engineering later and come back to this guy to get the quest so you can make an extractor again...you will be out of luck. It looks like this quest is not available the 2nd time around. I don't think there is another way to get it, unless someone can offer an idea here? I'll probably start with submitting a ticket to blizz and pray for a decent response...

The extractor itself is not BoP or BoE so you can get another engineer to make it if you have dropped engineering and reaquired it.

(tip: It wont be hard to find some1 to transmute the Arcanite Bar, since there is no Cooldown on it since patch 2.4)

this is extractor CAN be used in northrend,and u extract crystallized air,water etc...if u have engineering make this cause u loot 3-4 crystallized,and the respawn is really fast.u can see the clood with the helms made by engineers

As of 3.2 belt tinkers and eng helms no longer show gas clouds on the minimap. Instead, the ZME provides this ability just by being in inventory.

The Alliance quest giver is K. Lee Smallfry (Engineering Trainer). Location: Telredor, Zangar Marsh, coordinates 68.6 , 50.2 She is to the left at the foot of the stairs from exiting the lift, between the stairs and stairs leading to the flight master.

One of the bigger well-known-secrets in WoW.
A new engineer may never even notice the clouds, or simply assume they are part of the environment's decoration since, after all, they're non-targettable. Some players might be fortunate enough to hear about it from a more experienced engineer. Some might simply find the quest by accident while leveling. Many will have no idea it exists. Unfortunately for me, I assumed it was an ability I'd learn much later on from a profession trainer. I probably could've saved myself a lot of farming had I known how early I was capable of learning this!
