The base materials for this weapon come out to 60 Fel Iron Ore, 40 Eternium Ore, 8 each of Primal Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Mana, and the 2 Primal Nether, which drop from high level instance bosses.

You'll also need someone to perform the Primal Might transmute, which is on a 24 hour cooldown. However, it is purchasable from a vendor in Shattrath City, so it shouldn't be difficult to find a few people who will do it for a reasonable price.

While it's impossible to say anything about the price of these materials prior to release of the expansion, what we can say is that none of the materials are exotic, and (with the exception of the Primal Nether) should be readily available on the auction house for competetive prices. The materials for this weapon seem much more accessible than those for items like the Arcanite Reaper (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=12784) were on live (using 20 3-day transmutes which required rare-drop gems from veins available only in the highest level areas of the game).

Overall, I expect the cost of assembling this weapon is going to be much less prohibitive than high level weapons were in the past, which will in turn make this recipe very valuable. In fact, finding somebody to craft this item will certainly be the most difficult task of all, early on.

Agreed, nice for the offhand and also nice to see that crafted items will be more comparable to those from raiding/pvp, hopefully this is an indication of a better itemization trend for tradeskills, in particular weaponsmithing. Would be nice if it had some sockets as well, but can't have everything I suppose.

I got one of these crafted, and it is amazing, so far better than any of the rep reward daggers. It took about a day of farming for the primal mats, 8 days to get them crafted, and in the mean time doing couple instance runs to get the nethers for the crafter. It has been a great dagger so far, very very nice for combat daggers builds.

Dirge is possibly the most accessable and realiable way to get a Combat Rogue into the raid scene.The DPS and its speed makes it a remarkable weapon for prolonged Boss battles, although combat potency talents will form the corner stone of this weapons potential it does merit a second glance and comparrison to the other Daggers available.

From the list of Rep gained and looted Daggers this isnt as painful to get crafted as it first appears. its totally free of intesive rep grinding regardless of the win or lose story incorperated with Instances, This could become a very popular no frills get the job done step for many players.

Ive seen a fair amount of nice offhand daggers, the Scryers and Consoritum epics fit the role but theyre still a little slower than this.

The fact is, you don't NEED this dagger to get into Karazhan, and the Dirge is only slightly better than the Emerald Ripper, and not as good as Blade of the Unrequited or Malchazeen (two other daggers that have a good chance of dropping in Karazhan). On my server, the mats for this dagger are worth 1000g alone... add in the 8 days required to create the Primal Mights, I really don't believe this dagger is worth it.

I would agree you dont need this dagger to get into kara. However for a combat rogue this dagger is hands down the best choice compared to Emerald ripper or Blade of Unrequited. This dagger was made as the perfect OH for a combat rogue.

I use the searing sunblade, avalible from heroic vendor for 50 marks. It has a 1,30 speed compared to the 1,40 for this one. With maxed combat potency, this means that in a fight that lasts 5 minutes with you constantly hitting on the target, this dagger will give 214,3 offhand swings, where as the searing sunblade will give 230,8 offhand swings. With an average of 3 energy per hit (if you do hit them all), searing sunblade will give 49 more energy in that 5 minute fight, but you will lose 17 attackpower, and about 10 critrating, but gain 21 stamina. This weapon also has 2,4 more DPS. Damn, I should try to get this one.

Has anyone tried Tanking with this?
It's the fastest 1h weapon above 80 dps.
It has no tanking stats though.
Other Dagger options IMO are Timeslicer and warp splinter's thorn.
They are lower dps but they have tanking stats.

Any opinions on tanking with daggers?

I've been dual wielding these for a while now. Getting some pretty nice DPS off of them and poison applications are quick. I just got both of them enchanted with Mongoose, and they are insane. If I start out with a CS I can usually have poison in my off hand stacked all the way on the target before they become unstunned. They work pretty well for backstab, but realy, I don't use it that much.

I find the Riftmaker dagger from the Keepers of Time a comparable case: you would need to grind thoem up to Exalted, which would net you the weapon for a small fee. It would cost you considerably less money, but actually grinding any faction, and especially one like the KoT, up to any reasonable level takes ages, in my experience. The Dirge is quite a simple weapon to get, and will keep you going very well until you have the luxury of choosing a high rep/low droprate dagger (if not actually being better).

The nice thing about this dagger is that it's craftable. Farming the mats will get you this dagger, assuming you find a blacksmith.

This leaves you to save your arena pts for that shiny MH or heroic badges for the nice trinket or even DKP(if you even use that) for a nice epic MH from KZ.

For a raid starter gear set this isn't bad at all.

On my server (Sylvanas) this is the most spammed weapon in the entire server. Anyday if i just pop into and major city, it always appears Dirge :) i dunno whats funny about but it sure looks like hell =)
comments like "Knock, knock" "Who's there" "Dirge" always appears and comments like it =) really annoying and blizzard doesn't seem to care :(

One of the best weapons for a fury warrior to have outside of Black Temple. swap this in when boss mob is around execute range, and your dps will skyrocket. due to the decent dps, and very low attack speed, you are able to generate more than enough rage to spam execute every GCD with extra rage to spare to boost the damage.

People that think this is rogue only, need to open their eyes.

I've been eyeing this dagger as an Assassin rogue, thinking of a high poison proc rate. It seems like a good choice for me, as I'm smelly rich, but I'm curious if I can equip two of these. Anyone know if that's do-able before I waste more money?

Just to illustrate how far the Dirge spam got out of hand, my warrior actually wanted to sell this weapon (he is a blacksmith) and when I announced it in the trade channel I got spammed by whispers of people threatening to report me for spamming. Life's little irony I guess.

This is currently a usefull dagger for mutilate if you do not have acces to raid weapons. The fact that it is fast and the fact that is has both Crit rating and attack power make it a good started weapon, even dual wield.

Reasons to use this weapon:
More Focused Attacks Procs
-More mutilates
More Poison Procs (instant + deadly)
-Bigger overall dps
Additional crit for additional Focused Attacks proc

Reasons to not use this weapon:
Less burst damage for PvP
Better weapons avaible in easy raids

It could however still be a good idea to take these off in cities, due to the spam.

This is focused in a rogues view, as we're most likely the only class using daggers with melee / ranged dps stats.

With the patch 4.3 and Transmogrification a good set (in my opinion & and Rogue only ) to get and to use Dirge with is Rogue T5, the Deathmantle set, get the matching boots and belt, dual wield Dirge adn you´re set.
Works for Rogues ;)

Now to get Dirge without getting flammed due to its popularity as a <insert word here> Dirge...
