I don't know exactly what the drop rate is, but I can tell you right now that the listed drop rate is wrong. I've been farming him for the better part of an hour now and have killed him 6 times over with no orbs dropping. I'm fairly certain that you need some quest or item in order for it to drop, but I don't know which.

This won't drop unless you have "Stonetalon Standstill," from Mastok Wrilehiss at Splintertree Post (coords 73,60) in your quest log. Note: you don't have to do the other quest, just have it active.

It's very interesting hearing how people have a hard time getting this item to drop. I've killed the mob probably 9-11 times and it has dropped 100% of the time for each character. Some have had the Stonetalon Standstill quest, some had already finished it, and some had not even obtained it yet.

Also, FYI this item's tooltip stays the same for the followup quest (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=824).

In other words it still says "This item starts a quest" - don't delete the item, however, as you need it for the followup.

Stays in your bag after you turn in the quest but DO NOT DELETE IT.
Although it says "you have completed that quest" when you click it and has no apparant use, it is required for a follow-up quest.

Originally dropped by "Tideress", on the western side of the island in mystral lake. It's a slightly larger and very green elemental, easily distinguished from the others.
100% drop-rate for horde...at least it was on the 5 characters I completed this on.

Takes a while to respawn, so if it isn't there you should just kill elementals for a while and it will be back soon enough.

Currently if you delete the orb, you can get it back by dropping the quest and getting it back from the questgiver.

it dropped for me from another water elemental other than Tideress. I did have the Stonetalon Standstill quest in my log so can't verify if you need it or not

Killed Tideress twice and the orb didn't drop.
After I took Simmer Down Now from Silverwind Refugee and killed Tideress again the orb did drop.

Remember to do this quest before WOD! The quest might go away with the revamp of BFD.
