i got few hundred of them in bank. theres a good thing to store these if you get the chance. me and my few buddies went fishin all day (December 20) and i got quite a load of this great seafood. rogue and hunter energy food :) when cooked it gives you 10 agility. best "well fed" food for rogues at all levels.

On the US servers, you can catch Winter Squid from Sept 23 until March 20. (between fall and spring equinoxes).

If you try on an Oceanic server during that timeframe and you catch Summer Bass instead... well, then it's reversed for you guys.

I'm still using this fish' recipe to get level up my cooking untill I can make Sandworm meat.
Although they go for about 30g on the AH per stack, it's considered cheaper then actually level up fishing just to get hundreds of 'em.

Fishing In Azshara - Winter Squid

After combing the bay for fishing spots I discovered that these fish are in the open water. Just cast into any part of the water. I fished for about 45 min and caught 3 Winter Squid. You don't need to go far out for them, and the closer you are to shore the lower the fishing skill required to fish (less lost fish).

I came to Azshara for 2 fish, Winter Squid and Large Raw Mightfish. In the time I mentioned above none of my catch were Large Raw Mightfish (which has a lower drop rate):

Winter Squid -------------10% drop rate (reagent for Grilled Squid ----- buff bonus - +10 Agility for 10 min)
Large Raw Mightfish -- 5% drop rate (reagent for Mightfish Steak - buff bonus - +10 Stamina for 10 min)

Purpose in Azshara: Level cooking and fishing at the same time catching the above mentioned fishes. Both the level of the fishing skill required and the level of cooking required for the recipies are high and as near as I can see to Master Angler and Master Chef.

Azshara, all the out at the farthest point (south) on the little bumpy pieces of land. Best catch rate that I saw, everywhere else had to many other random fishes and boxes. Mostly I got the Darkclaw Lobsters, but the ratio was still decent. By the time I had a stack of the squid I had 2 1/2 stacks of the Lobster, and 14 clams (which a couple gave pearls for opening)

fishing these in azshara at the cord's 67.7 by 61.6 if you don't have cord's then it off of the long narrow island in the bay of storms that's s.e. of bilgewater harbor i have a fishing skill of 305 and still have to use a lure to get a decent catch rate 23 squid 25 lobsters 5 eels large mightfish, and clams and yes they are only catchable from Sept 21st to march 20th

For 2011, the date/time of the Spring Equinox is March 20th 23:21 UTC time... which is not GMT.

Edit: this does not mean Blizzard coded it that way. but it would explain why it hasn't been caught yet.

Credit to El's Extreme Anglin guide for the exact information.

Raw Summer Bass are available Spring and Summer. (Late-March to Mid-September check year for exact dates.)
Winter Squid are available Fall and Winter. (Late-September to Mid-March check year for exact dates.)

I can confirm the highest catch rates are 12:00 - 18:00 (Noon to 6PM). Now, if only I had caught a Winter Squid on my main and not my alt before the season ended. /facepalm

The Oceanographer achievement can now be completed if you caught the Winter Squid in the Fall/Winter and now the Raw Summer Bass in the Spring/Summer.

Important Note: I hope El's doing well. For now El's Anglin is only available on web archive websites. Best wishes El.

I can confirm that this final Oceanography specimen needed by me was not catchable today in the prime area in the center of Bay of Storms with 300 casts using 665 fishing skill between 1200 and 1800 loc fished in radius from 47.4 54.6 disappointing, but I had to test it.

Spring started on March 21st. This has nothing to do with the patch. I suggest you read at least ONE of the green posts above where people have repeatedly stated that this "fish" is only available during fall and winter, meaning from Sepember 21st till March 20th.

Actually, from other posts and my own experience it does in fact seem that fish like 生鮮的大魚 and 黑爪龍蝦 are no longer catchable from Azshara's waters as of 4.1. Reason would suggest squid aren't either, but we won't know for sure until September.

This change is probably a delayed reaction to the zone itself being remade to levels 8-20, as level-appropriate fish can now be caught here instead (生鮮的滑皮鯖魚, 生鮮的彩鰭魚, and 黑口魚).

If you are coming to Azshara for squid or any of the other fish that used to be catchable there, go fish off the coasts of 悲傷沼澤 or 詛咒之地 instead.

Edit: According to a post on El's Extreme Angling, the old Azshara fish are still catchable around the Ruins of Arkkoran (Northeast area of the Bay of Storms).

The green posta above that you refer to say that Winter Squid CAN be caught in May, not fall and winter as you say. Also, the poster is correct, Bay of Storms is now dropping no special fish, including those that used to drop all year. All you get now are Oily Blackmouth etc.

Is there a second source for the Winter Squid being catchable in May? I've been trying for 30 minutes and haven't found it yet, so I did some extra research and so far every single source of information doesn't even hint at this fish being catchable outside of the already overstated equinoxes.

Edit: Looking at the Summer Bass thread they indicate all over it that you can catch the Winter Squid even in May, but so far after many tries at different times of day, I'm still unsuccessful, so until someone provides more valid, less irrelevant information, then I'm declaring it's uncatchable until September. I apologize for hijacking your post, but it is for a good reason.

To those of you fishing for hours upon hours in Azshara to catch this fish, stop now. Since the Cataclysm expansion came out, Azshara was changed to a low level zone, and consequently, fishing in the area is now low level. Darkclaw Lobster, Summer Bass, Winter Squid, and Large Mightfish can no longer be fished here.
The Blasted Lands is now a good area, or any other level 50ish area.

So I tried fishing in Swamp of Sorrows (it is September 5th, 2011), and I do believe you would catch the winter squid there.
Because to great disappointment I fished up a Summer Bass :(

Not sure which person is right about the exact date when you can catch Summer Bass and Winter Squid, but as of now, on Sep 14, 2011 at 9:06pm server time, I caught a summer bass and no winter squids on the coast of blasted lands at 65,84. IMHO, this is the best spot if you're hearthed to either Org/SW or Dal (there are ports to Org/SW in dal, all other ports in dal are gone) because you can just use the portal to blasted lands in Org (not sure about SW but I'm guessing they have that too). On a very important side note, AZSHARA IS NO LONGER A PLACE TO FISH FOR THESE. It is a lower level place now and if you try to fish there for summer bass/winter squid like I did, it will only end in frustration. Back to the summer bass/winter squid one person says it's sept, another oct, another nov for the winter squid. I saw one post of a person claiming that you cannot catch them at the same time. I'm not sure which one is true, but according to elsanglin.com, summer bass can only be caught between March (Spring) and September (Autumn/Fall) equinox (approximately 20 March to 22 September), and winter squid can only be caught between September (Autumn/Fall) and March (Spring) equinox (approximately 22 September to 20 March). Also, according to the same source, you CANNOT catch them at the same time. You either have summer bass or winter squid available, but not both at the same time. They are available separately for a 6 month period. This source is probably more reliable than a random person's post, but then again I haven't tested it out personally so I don't know for sure.

Assuming the worst case scenario and the most likely answer, Sep 22 is the last day for you to catch summer bass and then it's winter squid until March. That means 9 days from the time I have posted this, YOU WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO CATCH SUMMER BASS. If you're working on the oceanographer achievement, YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL MARCH NEXT YEAR TO GET IT. If all this is true and you are reading this, GET IT NOW BEFORE TIME EXPIRES. GO TO BLASTED LANDS AND FISH UP RAW SUMMER BASS NOW!

I hope this helps you and you read this in time to take advantage of this perfect time frame to get your achievement. I will continue to fish and update this as necessary in the event the dates and/or information are wrong. Winter squid is the last fish I need for my achievement! Also as a side note, if you're not on a US server, the summer bass/winter squid might be reversed for you, due to you being in a different part of the globe. In either case the fish may be switched, but the deadlines would be the same.

26 SEPTEMBER 2011 - looks like the Winter Squid are back ! Spent 30 mins for no result in Azshara. Transferred to the top of a (half-submerged) palm tree east of Gadgetzan/Tanaris, and caught my Winter Squid within 8 minutes. Achievement complete! Good luck all !

冬魷魚 is part of 海洋學家 achievement. It is a winter fish that only can be fished off the coast from September 23rd to March 20th. Since Azshara zone change, it would seem the winter squid is no longer available in Azshara.
Swamp of Sorrows, Blasted Lands or Tanaris all have decent fishing rates to catch the winter squid. Don't waste your time in Azshara the way I did. (Casted hundreds of times in Azshara with no luck, first cast in Swamp of Sorrows caught my winter squid). Results may vary. Good Luck!

Caught one yesterday, 9/25/11 at about 7:45am server time on Wyrmrest Accord. I fished for about half an hour off the dock in Surwich and didn't catch one, then moved down the coast a little way so I was out of town and just in Blasted Lands according to Titan & my minimap, and caught it within 5 casts.

Not sure if I was just unlucky or if you just can't catch this from town. Got lots of Lightning Eel and Sunscale/Whitescale salmon from the Surwich dock, and that was it.

I just caught 冬魷魚 from 詛咒之地 today for the 海洋學家 achievement. DO NOT try fishing in Azshara for this catch because it simply won't happen. I (like others) was foolish enough to try during off season AND the wrong zone. Save yourself the trouble and wait. Or fish arch nemesis 生鮮的夏日鱸魚, which can be fished in the same zone.

Since no screenshots have been posted, I took the liberty to submit one of where I was at when I caught both 冬魷魚 and the 生鮮的夏日鱸魚. Not at the same time mind you. However... if one waited until the last few minutes of summer, right as the fall equinox was official.... I suppose one could catch both fish back to back, huh.. ?

If your after this fish for the 海洋學家 ( or for any reason come to think of it ), and your fishing in Azshara be mindful that the fishing tables changed since Cataclysm.

I would strongly suggest fishing in the Ruins of Arkkoran, if your after 冬魷魚, as its the only location that seems to have the Pre-Cata fish available. I personally fished @ 69.0 - 37.8 which worked for me.

if your fishing and catching the likes of 生鮮的斑點黃尾魚 or 生鮮的石鱗鱈魚 your in the right place.

if your catching the likes of 生鮮的滑皮鯖魚 or 生鮮的彩鰭魚 your probably in the wrong area .

冬魷魚 can be caught off the coast of Blasted Lands from approximately September 22 until approximately March 20 (check date of equinox) as this is Wow's official winter period. Was able to get mine off Surwich on the second cast with fully leveled 525 fishing skill. The summer can be used to catch 生鮮的夏日鱸魚 Wowhead suggests these are catchable in Azshara, but I tried for over an hour and came up with nothing.

Other fish from the same place were (10 casts)

7 x 黑爪龍蝦
1 x 石鱗鰻

After having trouble trying to get a squid in Azshara, I tried Swamp of Sorrows, coords: 88.95, 80.30 pointing just right of North. In just 30 minutes, 11:30pm-12:00am, I fished up 12 Winter Squid, near the farthest southern tip of Tanaris, just west of Land's End Beach, standing on a piece of wreck which was sticking up out of the water. Stunned me. Everything I read indicated day-time hours and rare catches. Also picked up 7 Raw Glossy Mightfish (if I got name right). I had tried Azshara first as suggested by a rating and got nothing. This might be a glitch but I was very happy to find it.

Went back this a.m. at 11.
Caught 9 Winter Squid - these Squid were caught within the first 15 minutes.
10 Firefin Snapper
11 Big-Mouth Clam: Zesty Clam Meat, one Iridescent Pearl
38 Raw Spotted Yellowtail
11 Stonescale Eel
13 Raw Glossy Mightfish
10 Raw Rockscale Cod

Another odd item about catching the same ocean fish in Tanaris' Dunemaul Compound pond, when I dove in to see how deep it is, no "breathing" warning popped up. By the way, it isn't deep.

Go to Surwich stand on the right of the flight master (facing the sea) on the tip of the peer. (46,90)
I did it with fishing 477 +125 .

Make sure you fish in the sea. (dark water on the map)

Got the Oceanographer ach today by catching Winter Squid in The Blasted Lands. I got it at the beginning of the Red Reaches, where the 'slave murlocs' are walking around being harassed by nagas :) Got it on the 3rd catch, dont know if it was pure luck though. The time was 14.00 (daytime) on EU server. My coords were 74.7, 57.5. Good luck and happy farming:)

Just caught my Winter Squid and bagged The Oceanographer at 51, 86 in The Red Reaches at the bottom of the Blasted Lands. 20 October 2011 on an Oceanic server 11:15 P.M server time.

(I searched everywhere for this Winter Squid, and I couldn't find a single one. I finally went to Blasted Lands and caught it on my 1st CAST !)

If you look at the map posted above for Blasted Lands; I got my Winter Squid directly EAST of the Dark Portal on the coast. (see where the 2 yellow dots are? go there!)

This wasn't made PERFECTLY clear to me. I caught a winter squid just now, off the coast of the Blasted Lands, it is Tuesday, October 25, 2011.

I thought the above posts were saying I could only catch the winter squid ON September 23. This is not true. It just has to be on or AFTER the Fall equinox, which was 23rd of September, this year, and BEFORE the Spring equinox, March 20 of 2012.

If fishing for this squid during 2012, you'll have to wait until September 22 or after and before the next spring equinox in 2013. Etc.

Fish about 2 hours in Bay of Storms (Azshara)..no Winter Squid -.-' went to Ruins of Arkkoran (Azshara again) and caught my squid at 2nd cast. So, Bay of Storms is really FAIL.

Confirmed on Oct 22, 2011, earlier generation fish may still be caught at the Ruins of Arkkoran, approx 70, 36. Five casts and saw 5 different species including Winter Squid and Raw Glossy Mightfish. Completed Oceanographer achievement.

If you are catching lvl 5 fish Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore or Raw Slitherskin Mackerel in Azshara, then you need to move to another location, I fished just to the east of the Tower of Eldara at about (81, 32) and I caught one of these within about 5 minutes of the first cast.

I fished this guy up on the coast of the Blasted Lands. Even though there are less nodes listed there than in Swamp of Sorrows, it's a lot easier to get to simply by using a Blasted Lands portal in any main city. Fished up the Winter Squid on about my fifth cast.

The fall equinox for 2011 was on September 23. For 2012, it begins on September 22. So today November 22, 2012 at 6:15 pm PST, I tried fishing in Swamp of Sorrows and got a Raw Summer Bass. So apparently, Blizzard has it hard coded for the Fall Equinox to begin on September 23, rather than using proper astronomical data.

Caught Winter Squid today Sept 23. Went to Blasted lands and fished off the dock in Surwich and caught no squid. Stood on the tip of the boat and caught different fish from what I was catching from the dock. After about 5th cast, caught the Squid.

You do not need to fish this out of schools or wreckage. This is an open water catch.

I'm Fishing 450 and have been trying for about an hour in Swamp of Sorrows without any luck.

I've caught 6 off the coast of the forbidden coast. Ive been fishing the little island due north of feathermoon fish count is as follows:

Raw spotted yellowtail: 14
Raw glossy might fish: 6
Big-mouth clam: 5
Firefin snapper: 4
Raw rockscale cod: 2

My lvl is 225 with bright bobbles and stong fishing pole. Without the lure all I managed to catch is junk lol

From the achievement post regarding 'The Oceanographer', obeefy posted the following information:

Important note: Sorry to spoil the funz in getting an achievement. But the Winter Squid and the Raw Summer Bass are seasonal fish. Which are equivalent to each other. Summer bass can only be caught from the end of March until the late September. September-> March = Winter Squid.

I am glad I checked that out because I had been fishing for a while this week looking for the Winter Squid. Now I know why I couldn't get it lol

Just caught half a dozen in Blasted Lands in... Surwich off the dock by the FP on ally side. At 250 fishing skill attached an Aquadynamic bobber thing. Took about 8 minutes but I was reading facebook in there too. This is after 5.4 dropped so its still there, just 6 months of Winter Squid and 6 months of Summer Bass. So be aware of time of year, Sept til March and March til Sept. and having a lure. Its October, pumpkins all over, and heckish to get here at lvl 54 but a nice place suitable to Halloween.

Winter Squid easy to catch in Blasted Lands loc 75,58, small beach area. Just fish it up without any school. I got it by 4th trying :) Of corse in the winter time november-march.

UPDATE: This was posted during PATCH 5.4.2. Blizzard has since changed some of the fishing around the DMF. So this may no longer be the case.

You can catch 冬魷魚 while fishing in the Darkmoon Island. It appears though being able to catch this fish is based entirely on your fishing skill. On Darkmoon Island the fish you catch is based on your skill. For example, at 525-600 level you will be catching Mist fish.

El's page says the tier they are common in is 250-300. However, the character I was fishing these up with was 198 - 225 in skill with no buff, and I was getting a lot of them. Was also fishing these up in open water (not pools).

I was on a level 32 hunter, Zul'jin, on the Southern tip of Jaguero Island, The Cape of Stranglethorn, there were no 哈圭羅獵豹 to bother me at my position while I was fishing. This was open water fishing, no schools at all, I fished for approximately 45 minutes, started with a fishing skill of 180, using 強化釣魚竿 and 明亮的小珠, ended up with a fishing skill of 284/300. Had to run to Booty Bay at 225 to get training, but it's close by so not a big loss of time.

I was leveling fishing and cooking, my cook book had 2 orange recipes, neither good till level 35, 斑點黃尾魚 and 烤魷魚 and this particular area was listed for both types of fish, practical because of my fishing skill and low level toon, the only alternative for squid is The Swamps of Sorrow where I would have to contend with level 55's :)

In my 45 minutes I caught a total of 243 items, absolutely no junk or missed casts.

生鮮的斑點黃尾魚 x 97
生鮮的石鱗鱈魚 x 31
火鰭鯛 x 24
生鮮的光滑大魚 x 15
石鱗鰻 x 20

On a happy note, totally worked my cooking skill from 241/300 to 290/300 the 生鮮的斑點黃尾魚 greyed out at 275, and the 冬魷魚 greyed out at 290.

I caught maybe 6-7 of these in 30 minutes. Quite honestly, it might be better to buy them on the auction house if you can, because once I hit cooking lvl 250, I was able to learn 4 new recipes, two of which require bear flank. At least on my server, these seemed to drop more reliably and were easier to find on the auction house. Just a thought.

The Fall Equinox for 2016 starts Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 10:21 AM EDT. I assume the squid should be fish able after or around this date. Plan on testing it when the time comes and ill post and edit here. Happy fishing all!

Swamp of Sorrows anywhere along the coast. However I've found this particular area most beneficial.
>Town: Bogpaddle (Northeast corner area.)
>See Frankie Goodtimes <food & drink> vendor in the local bar. Excluding the +2 gold drink, take a mixture of strong alcoholic beverages to a total of 150 drinks (It really depends on how long you want to fish.)
>Go to the Goblin beach party area. I like the point just to the right of the party to fish and I always light a cooking fire next to me. Without the cooking fire my catch rate of Winter Squid drops. Squid are attracted to light.

>Day & Time: Friday,11:45 PM to 12:35 AM
Casting Time: 50 minutes.
Fishing Skill 700
+ 30 Fishing pole
+ 5 Fishing hat
+ 2 Fishing enchant
+100 Aquadynamic fish attractor
+ Keeping completely smashed at all times. Don't puke - it seems to screw with the area your fishing. Time your drinks to keep completely smashed and totally eye blurred. There seems to be a tie in to the completely eye blurred state and catching a Winter Squid. The balance of blur to puke can be a fine one.

18 Winter Squid
81 Darkclaw Lobster

In case anyone is wondering, the timeframe (September to March) that the Winter Squid drops in seems to be the same between hemispheres. It's June and winter where I live and I play on an Oceanic server. I fished for a reasonable amount of time in Swamp of Sorrows and the squid didn't drop.

After fifteen casts at fishing level 1200, I just caught a 冬魷魚.

On the plus side, if you haven't fished up a 冬魷魚 yet, go grab one, or it will be another six months before you can complete 海洋學家!

Winter squid , fished up during the seasons listed. Blasted lands on East coast in random water after about 10 casts. FYI you will need to have classic fishing up a bit to get more than junk from the water. I was around 240 skill in classic. Happy hunting

They're not as frequent as Swamp of Sorrows, but I've found myself able to catch some off the coast of Jaguero Isle in Stranglethorn Vale. It was at the coordinates 55.87, 76.70; I think you could be anywhere on the island and still catch them, but that's where I confirmed a catch. Great for farming if you're waiting for the Extravaganza to start and it's the Fall/Winter season.
