Only the "Blacksmithing Plans" object on the "Undead" side (the eastern part that you have to take the 'Service Entrance' to enter) contains this particular recipe. And the ONLY time you can interact with the scroll that loots the plans is when you are on the "Weapons for War" quest as of Patch 4.2. If you are not on this quest, you cannot interact (and therefore loot) this recipe, so be sure to get it from 工匠大師維爾海姆 who's inside the church near the entrance. If you've already completed this quest, you will likely have to do this all on another character (or get a buddy to do it), as the GMs cannot reset this flag as far as I know.

I am not sure whether you have to actually be a blacksmith to actually loot this item, so be cautious.

Also, do not go to the 'Scarlet' side of this dungeon; the plans there will ALWAYS be the 設計圖：平靜.

You do NOT need to be a blacksmith to accept the quest, click on the scroll, kill the mob, and turn in the quest. However, if you do all that without being a BS at the time, you have hosed yourself as you will NOT get the plans - and you will have forfeited the chance to EVER try again on that character.

My warrior ran Strat once through random dungeon finder while leveling, and of course, he picked up and completed the dungeon quests during that run. He was skinner/miner for faster (and cheaper) leveling til 85, then switched to BS. When I then ran him into Strat, none of the questgivers were active, I could not interact with MC Wilhelm, the scroll on the ground was unclickable, etc - no way to get the plans. Submitted a ticket, GM said you lose, go run it on another character that hasn't done the quest yet.

Okay, so I broke out my DK who had never been to Strat before. Went in, got the quest, did everything right, turned it in...and no plans. Submitted another ticket - and GM said "Oh yeah, you also have to be a BS to get the plans. And no, we can't reset the quest so you can change profs and get the recipe now. Sorry."

So, the moral of this sad tale is this: the plans will only drop for a blacksmith who is on the quest but has not yet completed the quest. If this is not you, DON'T EVEN TRY FOR IT - at least on that character.

If you are locked out of getting it on your BS, it looks like you have four options:
1) Level a character to at least 46 (quest minimum), make him a BS, get some buddies for protection, and run into Strat to farm the plans (option not available if you're at the character cap for that server)
2) Roll a Death Knight, make him a BS, and send him into Strat to farm the plans (option not available if you already have a DK on that server)
3) Find a buddy who a) has a character level 46 or higher AND b) is a blacksmith (or is willing to change profs for you) AND c) has never run Strat before AND d) never ever wants that recipe (and if you find such a buddy, promise him whatever it takes to get the plans for you)
4) Camp the AH for many months. I'm on a mid-high pop server, I've been camping both Horde and Alliance AHs for several months, and I saw it once a few weeks ago for around 1,000 gold. Ackis Recipe List said it was a mob drop (technically true) and it looked like it was farmable, so I let the plans on the AH go unbid. <pounds head into wall now> Compared to the time investment of option 1) ( about two weeks of Molten Front dailies), I'd willingly pay 5,000 or more for that recipe - farmers, take note...

Do you have to have your BS skill up to 290 for it to drop? I've gone about 4 or 5 times now on my rogue (to sneak past) (BS skill is at 1/75) and absolutely nothing has dropped when the plans are clicked on, and the black guard only drops vendor trash.

so 1) does the plans drop the plans? (lol) or does the black guard drop them?

2) do i need to raise my BS skill up to 290 before attempting to grab the plans?

If you are trying to get this plan in order to complete your recipe list, you can also try your hand at farming the other Stratholme-exclusive recipes. All of the following recipes are Bind on Equip (BoE) and so therefore could also be potentially found on the Auction House.

Plans: Hammer of the Titans - Maleki the Pallid (8% droprate).

Live Side:
Blacksmithing:

Plans: Heartseeker – Willey Hopebreaker (7% droprate).
Plans: Serenity – Contained 100% in the object Blacksmithing Plans. NO quest needed but you MUST be at least a 285 Blacksmith in order to loot.

Tailoring:

Pattern: Truefaith Vestments - Balnazzar (8% droprate).

Alchemy:

Recipe: Flask of Distilled Wisdom – Balnazzar (3% droprate). Can also be purchased upon reaching Exalted with Cenarion Expedition (TBC) from Fedryen Swiftspear.

Additionally, while farming these recipes you can also work on completing the achievement Exalted with Argent Dawn by means of a repeatable quest that is accomplished in Stratholme. See this comment for full details on how reputation gains work for the Argent Dawn post-Cataclysm. You can obtain the Bind on Pickup (BoP) Argent Dawn recipes without being Exalted and so without the need to enter Stratholme.

alright. just did this today, farmed 5 patterns. have 290 blacksmithing, the required skill to actually use the plans. pick up the quest. right click the scroll on the floor, it will show you the plans in the loot window. loot em, kill the smith, abandon the quest. rinse repeat untill you have to your hearts content. if you turn the quest in, your done on that charactor.

The minimum 鍛造 level you will need to have attained, in order to loot these plans, while on 戰爭的武器, is 290. I know that number has been used in other posts...but I have not seen anyone say, with certainty, that this is the confirmed minimum. Just a lot of "I had this lvl BS..." You must have 290 BS in order to loot the plans off the ground in Stratholme, while on the above mention quest.

If you are planning to farm this pattern, I suggest you abandon the quest as soon as you've killed the add that is summoned by looting the ground object (static parchment-like art). That way there is no chance of having a 'moment of un-clarity' and accidentally turning in the quest. Not to mention, on your way out you can (having ditched it before) pick the quest up again, saving yourself time on the next run.

This comment is for Recipe Completionists. If you are trying to get this pattern, but have already completed the quest 戰爭的武器 do not fret. There is a few solutions to your problem. If you have another Blacksmith that is 290+ skill, you can bring your main BS into Strath with your alt BS, grab the quest on your alt BS, grab the pattern and then trade it to your main BS. I did this myself and confirm that it works as of patch 6.2.4 (July 5th, 2016).

The pattern itself isn't BoP so any BS can come in and get it and then post it on the AH. So you can buy it if it's posted.

Additionally, if you want to farm this to sell you can do that also. If you are a 290+ BS who has not completed the quest yet you can farm this item unlimited times. Take your BS into Stratholme. Grab the quest Weapons at War from the dwarf ( 工匠大師維爾海姆/master-craftsman-wilhelm ). Run to the pattern and pick it up. Abandon the quest, run outside the instance and reset the instance. Run back inside, grab the quest again and go pick up the pattern again. I do not know if this works, if you learn the recipe after grabbing it the first time. So I suggest you do this a few times for selling purposes before learning the first pattern. It goes for 5.5k gold on my AH currently.

If you have already done the quest, but want to get the plans, you can get a friend at 46-60 lvl and use party sync to queue with him to Stratholme - Service Entrance. You will be able to accept the quest again and get the pattern (providing you have 290+ blacksmithing).
