These stones award an amount of XP equal to the total required for the pet's current level. So, for example, a level 1 pet would gain 50 XP while a level 24 pet would gain 1980 XP.

Any XP beyond what was needed to reach the next level is put towards your progress bar on the next level. So, for example, if you use a stone on a level 12 pet which is 545/945 towards level 13, it will gain 945 XP which would put it at 545/990 towards level 14 after using the stone.

While at first glance this seems to indicate that you get more benefit the higher your pet level, figuring out the optimal point at which to use these stones is a little bit more complicated. Even though your higher level pets need more XP per level they also earn more XP per battle. The real measure of how much effort you are saving by using a stone is the amount of effort (in terms of number and difficulty of pet battles) you would have taken to earn that XP.

There is a sizeable jump in the XP required from level 20 to 21 but thereafter the jumps for every new level are pretty small. Which means that levelling up pets in the level 21-24 range all takes a similar amount of effort. However, it should be remembered that using a stone on a level 24 pet that already has some progress on its XP bar means that some XP will be wasted - the more progress your pet has made from level 24 to 25, the more will be wasted.

My conclusion is that if you want the best return from using these stones, use them on pets that are level 21-23. Use them also on level 24 pets that don't have much progress towards level 25.

If you find that you are collecting more training stones than you can use in this way, then using them from levels 17-20 yields the next most effective returns.
