This key will allow you access to the entirety of the Blackrock Depth instance. The chain to obtain this key starts with the quest called Dark Iron legacy, which you must obtain while dead. The person who gives this quest is a ghost located partway down the center pillar in which you journey on your way to the bottom of Blackrock Mountain.

To obtain the quest for this key you have to be a ghost and the quets giver is standing on a coffin of some sort in the middle of Blackrock Mountain after you cross the chain and go into the room above the lava.

As you talk to Franclorn Forgewright (in the center column of BRM between the entrance level and the Blackrock quarry) for the first time, be a good boy or girl and be sure to follow the instructions given that you probably didn't read. Pick up the initial quest, then click on the man and go through his dialog. Then turn in that first quest and then he'll give you another one. This second quest is the first step that involves BRD.

Someone I took through BRD got the initial quest and assumed that was all they needed.

It appears, sadly, as if this key is one of the casualties of switching factions. Though I can't see how (it's not faction dependent how you obtain it), the key is no longer in my keyring (I have The Keymaster achievement, though) and won't be restored by a Locksmith. Curious, and something to keep in mind...

Discovered this tonight. If you don't have the Shadowforge Key you can still access most of the instance if you are/have a priest with you. Once you reach the East Garrison, head north to the small hall with open windows on each side. From there you can Levitate down onto the bridge below. You won't be able to get to the West Garrison or the final boss, but can reach Shadowforge City and all the bosses there. Just a tip if you happen to start the instance without the key and don't want to go back for it til later.

As of 4.0.3a, this is no longer needed, or for that matter, available to get. You can no longer pick up the quests, and the previously locked gates are now openable by anybody, so don't waste your time.

Like many other dungeon-related keys, the Shadowforge Key was removed. However it does still exist in the game. If you go to a Locksmith you can actually get it back... at least temporarily; when you log out it will again be removed from your character.

There is another quicker way to get it..
You see, in Dalaran. in the underbelly, go to The black market and find a guy named Darahir,
CLick on th e" I've lost my key, ya da ya da " :) and Heeey---the key is in your bag

Darahir only sells "Reagents and Magical goods", no keys, there is a goblin locksmith just opposite of him but in my case he only gave me a key to Scholo wich is really nice and all but that still wont get me from East Garrison to West Garrison.
I hope I will find out how to get to the Grimm guzler without having to kill every mob I may agro along the way or resort to trickery like:
logging to my lock, who has 恐酒遙控器Direbrew's remote
invite a guild mate to my party,
port us to Grim guzler with "Direbrew's remote", or summon my guild mate with "have group will travel",
make guild mate group leader,
log back to my priest,
let guild mate summon my priest to the guzler,
all of that only to buy a bunch of leather-working and blacksmithing recipes from the Thorium Brotherhood vendor at the guzler

Edit:
For those that got stuck just like me, the way in to West Garrison from East Garrison turned out to be a very big blocked cogwheel in the room that you enter from "The Detention Block" just walk past the stairs first (on the left side) then you will see what I mean, can't miss once you know, click the coggwheel construction and then go up the stairs.
