Welcome to Wowhead's Shadowlands Inscription profession guide. Here we will explain how to level Inscription from 1-100, crafting Darkmoon Decks, and benefits of the profession like Vantus Runes, reputation contracts and codexes.
Upcoming Changes to Inscription in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Inscription in Shadowlands 9.2 will see the following changes. All recipes sources are not yet known.

Why Is Inscription Useful in Shadowlands?
Inscription has always had the reputation for being a bit lackluster when compared to other professions, particularly when the utility of Glyphs was reduced in favor of purely cosmetic changes. However, with some important changes, Inscription will be far more useful in Shadowlands than it has been before!
Missives are Inscription-created Optional Reagents for specifying Secondary Armor stats. Since crafted armor may have as many as two slots for Secondary Stats, and only Inscriptionists can make these, these are expected to be in high demand.
Darkmoon Decks will be somewhat easier to make with the introduction of blank cards, which can be inserted into a deck to replace an elusive missing card. This makes these easier to assemble.
Contracts have returned, which help players raise their zone factions.
Making Gold with Inscription in Shadowlands
Several new flight-form Glyphs have been added to Patch 9.1.5. These will be in high demand early for those Inscriptionists who want to get in on the ground floor!
Near the end of BfA, Blizzard announced that pre-Shadowlands Tomes and Codexes used to change talents outside a rested area will be level restricted to players 49 and under. This means that anyone who wants Tomes or Codexes in Shadowlands is going to have to buy the new version instead of relying on those made in previous expansions. Any character leveling up in Shadowlands will need to buy new Tomes when they turn level 50, so this may be a steady source of profit.
Darkmoon Decks are also popular. With an iLevel of 200, they are a good starter item for many players. It's also a little more assured you'll actually get a trinket than if you use the 9.1.5-introduced
Korthian Accessory
, which only gives you a chance of getting a trinket.
Last, but certainly not least, Inscriptionists are the sole source of the Missive Optional Reagents, which allow crafters to determine the desired secondary stats on crafted gear. Since most crafted gear that allows this requires 2 different ones (you can't double up), a variety of Missives on the Auction House will be a steady and welcome source of income.

All Contracts allow you to gain a small amount of reputation with the target reputation whenever you complete a World Quest in Shadowlands. Each also requires at least Revered reputation with the target reputation to learn the create the Contract. These are purchased from the respective reputation Quartermaster.

Shadowlands Inscription Darkmoon Decks, Cards, and Wildcards
Four new Darkmoon decks are an important part of Shadowlands Inscription. Darkmoon Decks all have On Use effects with a 3-minute cooldown, which is a change from BfA and Legion when the Darkmoon Decks were passive or procs.

Shadowlands brings many changes to professions and one of the most exciting ones is
Optional Reagents
! With Optional Reagents, players can customize crafted armor, weapons, and jewelry.
Inscription's value in Shadowlands will be largely from its ability to create some of the most in-demand Optional Reagents: those that determine a secondary stat on a piece of crafted armor: Critical Strike, Haste, Mastery, or Versatility.

Leveling Inscription in Shadowlands
One thing is clear: before you start leveling Inscription, you're going to have to put aside a massive store of Herbs to be able to take advantage of the best (and in some cases, only) leveling options. Since it doesn't really matter what herbs you use (milling isn't herb specific), you can gather these anywhere, and search the Auction House for whatever is the cheapest option. You will only need the expensive
靜謐墨水
from
夜影花
for the very last part of getting to 100, so that's good news at least.
You need more considerably more ink than what you will make leveling up with ink and mass milling. Options for the Missives are presented as you will need to figure out which recipe best balances out what you have comparing what ink types you have available to you.

Shadowlands Inscription World Quests
Each of the four Covenant zones has its own Inscription World Quests. You must have a Shadowlands Inscription skill of at least 25 for these to show up. Completing one of these quests rewards +1 Inscription , experience, and 125 reputation with the local zone faction.
If you are doing the normal storyline, these quests will not be available until World Quests open at level 60. Characters leveling through Threads of Fate with the appropriate skill level can do these starting at level 50, after choosing their Covenant and picking their first questing area.
For this reason, if you are leveling through Threads of Fate, I strongly encourage doing what you need to do to push any Profession skills to 25 as soon as you can to take advantage of these easy skill points, experience, and credit toward your zone completions.

Do they intend to keep Inscription this boring till the end of WoW? I miss the time when we're responsible for creating game-chaging glyphs.

From what I have seen looking at the pop-ups when you hover the Darkmoon Deck cards they say they are crafted from a Blank Card of Repose or whatever type of deck you are trying to make and of course the uncommon ink as per usual. I think that would be a great way to help streamline the process of making these decks. The old way was a huge resource sink and heavily RNG. But if we can craft blank cards of said deck then we eliminate a metric ton of resource sink. I for one hope this is the case. Always bugged me that it was 1:52 in hopes of getting the card you need to finish a deck.

Important to note, there is currently an issue where crafting reagents for Inscription can not be placed into an inscription bag. (I cant put ink and pigment into my burnished inscription bag personally.) Hopefully this will be remedied soon.

Are you sure the description of Blank Cards is correct? You're saying they're "wild cards" but it doesn't look like they're that way. They allow you craft a random card in a particular deck (which just allows a little less rng, you still get rng for the card you get).
Why would it have you craft a random card in a particular deck if it's a "wild card"?

Has anyone had trouble learning quartermaster bought items? The Codex says friendly with Ascended, which I am, but I can't learn it and I'm not sure why. My inscription is maxed at 100.
