How to Get to Shadowlands

Welcome to Wowhead's guide on how to get to Shadowlands! This guide covers both a general overview of the opening questline, and how to travel back and forth between Shadowlands and the lands of Azeroth.
Of course, the "easy" way to enter the Shadowlands is to die a permanent death -- but as a future Maw Walker, you will be able to pass the veil in mortal form and won't need to resort to anything so drastic.
As you open the mysteries of Shadowlands, you'll also unlock portals so you can travel between the Shadowlands and Azeroth.
Opening Questline: A Chilling Summons
When Shadowlands goes live, any characters who reaches level 50 will automatically receive a quest to go to the Shadowlands:
The Alliance quest

summons players back to Stormwind, and the Horde quest

leads players back to Orgrimmar, where you learn that prominent leaders of both the Alliance and Horde have disappeared. There, you take an Acherus Deathgate to the depths of Icecrown Citadel, to meet with

and receive your orders to use the Helm of Domination to breach the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead.
This leads to The Maw, a desolate place of trapped souls, where you will help the mixed group of Alliance and Horde leaders escape eternity in The Jailer's dominion. There you will follow the storyline
Through the Shattered Sky
, to proceed through and eventually escape The Maw.
Oribos
After completing
Through the Shattered Sky
, you will be appear in
Oribos
, the central city of the Shadowlands. This opens the second storyline,
Arrival in Shadowlands
. This is where you will become acquainted with the city that will serve as a central hub for the entire expansion.
In the fifth quest in this line,

, you establish the portals in
Oribos
back to Orgrimmar and Stormwind. These are located on the eastern outside platform: blue marker for Stormwind, red marker for Orgrimmar.

Portals to Oribos from Azeroth
Crossing into these takes you to the portal rooms for Stormwind and Orgrimmar. These portals are only accessible to level 50+ characters who have completed the opening quest line through The Maw and have entered Oribos. Opening these portals once does not open them account-wide.
In Stormwind, the portal to Oribos is located to the right of the portal to Boralus, near the end of the southeastern wing, /way 47.7, 94.8
In Orgrimmar, the portal to Oribos is located on the main floor of the portal room, in the northeastern part of the room /way 52.2, 88.0

I have a friend who somehow lost the questline for starting Shadowlands - the initial banner came up but somehow she can no longer access the questline nor find any NPC to get her back on - any advice please?

If you're stupid like I am and have hearthstone'd out of the maw and can't find your way back, there's a Death Gate setup outside of Grommash Hold which will take you back.

Is there a deathgate where you met with Fordragon? In case you get out of the initial quests and can't find your way back.
