Dracthyr Evoker Starting Zone Walkthrough - Forbidden Reach

This guide walks you through the Evoker starting zone initial campaign, which will earn you the achievement

. This will take you through seven chapters and earn gear that you can use to start off your adventures in Dragonflight. By the time you complete this entire campaign, you should be level 60 (at least 30% toward level 61, depending on how many extra mobs you may have killed or side bosses you may have done).
We will go through a complete look at the chapters, quests, and challenges that you will face in the
禁忌之境
as you build your first Drachthyr Evoker in Dragonflight.

Important Things to Know About the Starting Zone Experience
The starting zone is the
禁忌之境
, a large map with multiple elevations just to make your life learning to fly as a Dracthyr even more interesting.
Here are some facts about the starting experience of the Evoker:
Evokers are a Hero Class and always start at level 58 in their own dedicated starting area, the
禁忌之境
.
You will only be able to make one Dracthyr Evoker per realm.
You will begin Forbidden Reach with a full set of iLvl 206 Uncommon gear. You will replace this with increasingly better gear over the course of the starter zone -- Rare iLvl 219 while you're level 58, 229 at 59, and 239 at 60. Occasionally a piece or two of Rare gear will Epic upgrade to higher levels -- for example, at 60, Epics become 252. You will leave the zone with a set that clocks in somewhere in the iLvl 225-230 range, which is more than adequate for starting your leveling experience in the Dragon Isles. By comparison, a level 60 boosted character starts out with an iLevel of 180.
You begin with general Evoker abilities and won't pick your specialization until near the end of the starter campaign.
Evokers start out with five abilities (three Racial abilities two spells) and pick up more as you level through the starting zone. These are:
滑翔
(Racial) - a Slow Fall-like ability
尾巴揮擊
(Racial) - Lash out with your tail, knocking enemies within 6 yds into the air. Useful as an interrupt as well as putting in a little distance.
振翅攻擊
(Racial) - With a powerful flap of your wings, knock away enemies in front of you.
The main difference between

is direction;
尾巴揮擊
gets all enemies within 6 yards even if they're behind you, while
振翅攻擊
only knocks away enemies in front.

(Spell) - an offensive spell that hits 2 enemies at once.

(Spell) - a single-target spell that damages an enemy or heals yourself or an ally, depending on which you target.
One bonus is that learning how to fly as a Dracthyr will serve extremely well when you pick up Dragonriding in the Dragon Isles. The key mechanics are the same, even though you can build Dragonriding to a much greater degree.
Alliance and Horde have nearly identical leveling experiences, up through the end of Chapter 6,

. Once this is concluded, you'll either go to Stormwind (
All Along the Watchtowers
) or Orgrimmar (

) for Chapter 7. The only other difference is that you'll only see players in your own faction in the Forbidden Reach.
In many ways, the Evoker starting zone will remind players of the Death Knight starting zone. Abilities are unfolded over the course of the starting area to introduce you to their mechanics and use. You gain a full set of Rare starter gear that will serve you well once you've left the starting area. And while the reception you'll get when you first arrive in Stormwind or Orgrimmar isn't overtly hostile, it's not exactly a warm welcome.

While you will be asked to choose one of the two class specializations late in the starting zone experience (Devastation or Preservation), you will have only a limited number of choices available. You won't actually be choosing your full talents until you leave the Forbidden Reach. Still, you'll definitely want to check out the guides our dedicated Evoker class writers have created for you.

Changes in Patch 10.0.7
In Patch 10.0.7, you will get the ability
Aerial Halt
along with other Dracthyr racial flying abilities. This new ability gives some much-needed braking ability to flying as a Dracthyr.
The Starter Campaign: Dracthyr, Awaken
Warning: Even if you have this turned on as an option on other characters,
Auto Loot
will be shut off when you start the Evoker campaign. You'll need to go into
Options > Gameplay > Controls
to turn it back on.
Chapter 1: The War Creche
The first chapter introduces you to the lore of the Dracthyr.

Awaken the other Dracthyr.
You will be given the
崩解
ability temporarily as a right-click ability just to un-freeze your compatriots; the spell will become yours permanently when you finish the quest. This will show up as a hand icon when you get close to your target.
Your first instruction is to go around and Awaken frozen Dracthyr. These are indicated by yellow dots on the map, and they appear to be statues rather than living creatures. One will not be in such great shape, though.
Run around to the indicated areas. You will be prompted to use
滑翔
to slow your fall.
Once you've awoken the three frozen Dracthyr

These both operate in the same area, so pick up both of these at once. You can't move on until you complete both quests anyway.

s will cast Splinter at about 35% health and turn into two

Side Treasure: The Locked Library
This isn't a part of the quest line, and you don't get anything permanent for doing this, but it does introduce you to something you'll run into throughout the starter zone: drops from bosses or treasures that give temporary buffs instead of items.
As you're going through the area for the quests above, you will see a sparkling crystal next to a stand, near a door with an arcane barrier, around /way 35.8, 74.0.
Pick up the crystal and set it in the stand. This will unlock the library. Go inside and you'll see a purple glowing wand on the center table.
This may seem confusing at first because it will display like it put an item called
蒼藍魔法杖
in your inventory, but if you look you'll only find a

. That's because this item actually buffs you instead of giving you an item. This gives you the buff
沸湧蒼藍魔法
, which gives you a chance upon dealing damage to blast the target with Arcane damage for 10 minutes.
This isn't the first buff item you can get in the Forbidden Reach, but it's your introduction to the concept.

You'll be introduced to

through a cinematic, your first major enemy to defeat. You'll then be asked to

into the Earth-Warder's Cauldron and rescue/heal other Dracthyr with

The easiest way to complete this is to find injured Dracthyr Talon (they'll have a giant blood drop over their heads) and cast
生命烈焰
on them. Since this is a ranged spell, you can stand some distance away. However, any hostile mobs near your target will aggro you. Fortunately,
生命烈焰
cuts both ways and you can use it to kill your foes.
You can also rescue a Dracthyr by finding a Talon that's in the clutches of a
育縛龍獸
and killing its captor. Killing a
育縛龍獸
that's simply near a Talon doesn't constitute a rescue.
Rewards the

Defeat Lapisagos and escape the War Creche.
This is a fairly straighforward fight;

comes in about about 35% health, so even though he's an elite, he's easy to defeat. The only issues are to stay out of his Frost Breath, which comes out in a cone in front of him, and deal with the small

adds that occasionally appear. Since he does not turn as he's breathing in for his Frost Breath, you can easily watch for this and move away from in front of him before you get turned into dry ice. You'll be prompted to heal yourself with

once you get below 50% health.

Leave the creche and enter the Old Weryn Grounds, sort of mission central for the rest of the scenario.

Chapter 2: Old Weryn Grounds
This chapter is mostly about learning some of the mechanics for your Dracthyr abilities.

. Cast an Empowered I Fire Breath, Empowered II Fire Breath, and Empowered III Fire Breath.

is very simple -- just go down the stairs and click on the beacon.

gives you a new spell to work with called
火焰之息
. This quest teaches you the mechanics of the Breath attack. The quest is vague and doesn't really teach you about how you use this ability.
The first thing you want to do is find a Fire Breath Infuser and set up next to it. This allows you to reset the 30-second cooldown of
火焰之息
on demand, so you can practice casting it several times without having to wait.
The basic mechanic is that you first take a deep inhaled breath, and then you let out the breath with fire. The longer you inhale, the more powerful the fire effect will be.
How you do this is up to how you set your spell preferences. Under
Gameplay > Combat
, you have two options under Empowered Spell Input:
Hold and Release
, or
Press and Tap
. Hold and Release is default. Play with both to see which you prefer.
Note: Hold and Release does not currently work if you are mouse-clicking your action buttons; it only works with the number pad. The other casting option, Press and Tap, works both ways.
With
Hold and Release
, you hold down the number key corresponding to its place on the spell bar to charge the spell, then release when you want to cast. You'll see the bar down below and a slider will indicate how far you've charged it. This one is barely into Empowered Fire Breath I:
With Press and Tap, you click it once to start breathing in, and click it again when you want to release the breath.
Pure Opinion: I recommend Press and Tap.
Hold and Release is more prone to user error by releasing and casting too soon.
With Press and Tap, if you press to activate and don't do a second press, it casts automatically when it gets to maximum charge.
Press and Tap is easier to use in an actual combat situation, particularly if you want to rotate to reposition the cone while casting without risking an accidental early (underpowered) cast.
When you are charging your spell, you will see lines on the ground that show you where the cone will cast. You have time during charge-up to reposition the cone.
Just watch where you're pointing it during practice!
Just practice taking in various lengths of breaths and releasing them. Cast Empowered I on the first part of the bar, Empowered II on the second, and Empowered III on the last bar.
Completing this quest will teach you
火焰之息
as a permanent Red spell.

There are actually three separate tasks in this series:

Since these are the same skills you'll need to master for Dragonriding in Dragon Isles, you'll have a lead on your fellow players, since the mechanics will already be familiar to you.
Important: You are given the quest item

as an action button that allows you to restart a particular set of tasks; use that to restart part of the quest instead of abandoning the quest. If you abandon, you'll start over on the first step, losing all progress.
First task: Practice Soar
Talk to Dervishian to learn the
飛騰
ability. This will also reveal the rings. First task:

through five rings.
飛騰
has a four-second cast time, so don't release it too early. You'll go up into the air and start coasting forward. Hit the rings in succession. Don't worry if you miss one; you'll have enough lift to circle back and pick it up.
Second task: Learn about diving
Soar through 5 rings.
Talk to
寇德西
before going on, or you won't see the rings you need to go through. They are on a ledge overlooking a river, near where you land from your successful
飛騰
through the rings. The pattern makes no sense from land, but becomes clear once you're in the air.
This is a maneuvering task, and it's fairly easy once you're up in the air and can see where you are supposed to go. Click
飛騰
and you'll see the first ring. Dive down through it and the next three rings, and then point your cursor slightly upward to go through the fifth and final ring. This teaches you about using gravity to speed up an approach. You can try this one multiple times if you need. It gets much easier once you see the pattern the first time.
If you fail, simply land and you'll be teleported back to the start.
Third task: Learn about Advanced Flying: Skyward Ascent and Surge Forward
Use your new abilities to get through 3 rings.
Teaches you about new abilities

(if these don't appear on your spell bar, they will be under General in your spellbook).
向上爬升
gives you a lift up and has 1 charge;
向前疾衝
makes you to move forward more quickly and has 2 charges. Time these carefully, as they have cooldowns.
For this quest, you're teleported back to the Old Weryn Grounds. This is another "fly through the rings" quest (only 3 this time), but the rings start much further out than they did on the first task.
Rings are also removed from this one as you go through, so if you only go through the first ring, you'll have to make it that much farther to go on a second try. Fortunately, your charges will also reset when you Try Again, so you'll still be able to make it.
I had most success by clicking
向前疾衝
about halfway to the first ring, and then as soon as I passed the first ring, clicking
向上爬升
. This is usually enough to get me through all three rings without even having to recast
向前疾衝
.
After completing this quest, you learn
飛騰
,

, and
向上爬升
as permanent abilities.

Practice Soar
.
There isn't much you have to do here. Just hit
飛騰
and you've completed the quest. Just circle back behind where you started to fly to the quest turn-in mob,

as a reward.
This concludes Chapter 2: Old Weryn Grounds.
Chapter 3: The Healing Wings

Meet Cindrethresh in the Caldera of the Menders.
The Caldera of the Menders is quite a bit north and slightly west of the Old Weryn Grounds. Go out to the end of stone platform where you practiced your abilities and Soar off over the bridge. Don't forget to use
向前疾衝
and
向前疾衝
to help you get there. You'll need to Soar again to leave the second platform to get to the Caldera, but thankfully it will reset for you to do that.
Side note about Soar: Dracthyr flight ability is not a free flying card. There are places you still can't get to with Soar. You'll find some areas of the starter zone where it doesn't work at all, either due to limitations of the quest or due to geographical features that mysteriously prevent you from flying over them.
Meet up with Cindrethresh and turn in the quest.

Follow Cinderthresh to find Viridia.
Good news: you aren't meant to succeed here. So don't worry about when you choke and keel over from the fumes.
You're heading into a creche full of toxic smoke and fumes, and the best advice you get is "take a deep breath". This doesn't exactly work. You'll get a progress bar that shows how close you are to a full toxin load from
窒息中
. But here's the key: you're
supposed
to pass out. Don't fight anything -- just run toward the indicated area on the map. When that happens, you'll be overcome by fumes and awaken outside, none the worse for wear.
On turn-in, you'll be rewarded with

Go inside the cave (Lair of the Scythid) and look for a ramp leading up and to the right. At the top of the ramp, you'll see a large skeleton ahead with

hiding behind it at /way 27.4 36.5. Click her to rescue.
Just below the ramp is the spawn spot for

. It's worth fighting while you're there, since it drops

After you return the Tuskarr children, it's a quick soar back to the Caldera to finish your turn-ins.

With this quest, you learn

, an AoE ranged heal spell that heals up to 3 allies at a time. The quest is to go down into the area below to heal groups of injured Dracthyr and Draknoid, as well as Atrenosh Hailstone. There are also Emerald Blossom Infusers for resetting the 30 second cooldown on
翡翠之花
.
Find groups and set
翡翠之花
in the middle of them. Strictly speaking, you aren't required to use
翡翠之花
at all; you can use
生命烈焰
instead (or probably even bandages, since it doesn't specify how the healing is accomplished). But
翡翠之花
is more efficient for groups, especially since you can reset it using the Infusers. Use
生命烈焰
for picking up the spares.
Turn in for

Recover items and survivors from within the Support Creche. Find Rethenash, Tenezeth, Katrinasa, and rescue 10 survivors.
It's back into the stinky chambers full of
窒息中
Gas! What fun!
Seriously, at least this time you have a way to deal with the
窒息中
debuff. You'll have a special action button called the
劇毒解藥
, with a short six-second cooldown. Clicking this will reduce your toxicity load by a large amount. Use often, particularly just before you need to interact with any item. This will take down your toxin load and you won't pass out before you're ready.
You'll build toxic charges faster when you're standing near the smokers, since they emit
惡臭氣體
, which worsen the effects of the normal
窒息中
. You'll want to avoid them ... until you don't.
To rescue the survivors, you need to open a door with a magical barrier. As you did with the Locked Library, you will see a stand next to the door and then a crystal off to your left. Pick up the crystal, return it to the stand, and let the survivors out. You can click

without dropping the crystal.
Now comes the time that you
want
to pass out.
Once you've completed all your goals, the fastest way out is to let yourself be overcome by the fumes. Once you collapse, you'll end up outside, teleported to the feet of the quest turn-in. After turn-in, you'll learn the racial ability

and receive the
翠綠半龍人指環
.

Speak with Emberthal.
This quests sends you back to the Old Weryn Grounds. This is a very long way, and you won't get back on an ordinary
飛騰
, because there is too much lift required to get over the mountains ahead.
Although you are given nothing in the quest text or dialogue that hints to this, you do have a quick way back. If you look at the platform near you, you will see two Dracthyr, Siaszerathel and Segallia, next to a purple pad called the Soar Enhancer. Step on this, and you'll cast an
強化飛騰
that will get you all the way back to the Old Weryn Grounds without having to steer.
Alternatively, you can use your hearthstone. But the
強化飛騰
is much more fun.
Reporting back to Emberthal will reward

This concludes Chapter 3: The Healing Wings.
Chapter 4: The Ebon Scales

Cavalry Has its Place: Learn to ride your personal vorquin mount.

is simple: travel to Stormsunder Crater and meet Azurathel there.
But before you go, check in with

. This is a very tough mob and it's unlikely you'll be able to solo it at your level and gear. Fortunately, if things are busy enough, you can almost always attract help. Killing Ketess yields the
地縛寶典
, which is a clickable buff item that gives you Earth Shield for 10 minutes.
Completing this gets a new spell,
深層吐息
, a flashy spell which has you flying over your enemies while spewing molten cinders along their path. Use only when you have lots of enemies to flame at once.

Again, you'll find a Soar Enhancer just a few steps away, attended by Mage Talons from the Ebon Scales. Step on it and you'll fly yourself back to Old Weryn Grounds.

This concludes Chapter 4: The Ebon Scales.
Chapter 5: Froststone Vault
This chapter starts with a cinematic that introduces your new dragon aspect escorts, Ebyssian and Wrathion. This is also an unusually short chapter.

Choose a specialization - Preservation or Devastation
Devastation is the DPS spec, and Preservation is for those who wish to play a Healer. Devastation is more aligned with the Red and Blue dragonflights and Preservation with Emerald and Bronze dragonflights. You'll get some new abilities based on your choice:

You won't actually get access to the full Devastation or Preservation talent trees during the starter zone experience.
There also isn't a clear winner here for which works "best" in the starting area, since most of the quests here don't rely on one over the other. In fact, several of them will give you a choice whether to heal or whether to attack. You can do both if you choose.

You'll need to

north and slightly east to get to Scalecommander Sarkareth, but it's an easy trip. Don't forget to use

or you won't quite make it.

You can accomplish this one of two ways, depending on your specialty or preferences. You will get a progress bar to fill that will credit you either with killing mobs at the bottom of the platform, or healing allied NPCs. There isn't a faster or "better" way to do this, so just do whatever you feel like doing until the progress bar is complete. Once done, turn in the quest and get the
翡翠淚滴項鍊
as your reward.
This concludes Chapter 5: Froststone Vault.
Chapter 6: Wrath of the Storm-Eater
Debuff Alert: During this entire chapter, you will have a debuff called

. While this is active, you will not be able to

or use your Vorquin mount. You can still

casts as compared to Wrathion). Turn in quest down the road to Emberthal and collect your

Your final orders are to organize the evacuation of Forbidden Reach. This sounds more involved than it is; all you really need to do is return to the Old Weryn Grounds. Cross the bridge and go up the stairs to report in with Nozdormu. You'll get a cinematic and automatically have Speak to Nozdormu completed.
Your next goals are on the platform below Nozdormu. You can

down instead of just jumping if you want, but you still can't Soar or use your mount.
As you are moving through to speak with Sarkareth and Viridia, you'll hear some dialogue going on about the organization. Here it's revealed that Wrathion will go to Stormwind City and Ebyssian will travel to Orgrimmar to entreat the help of the Alliance and Horde. This lets you know who you'll be traveling with on the last chapter.
Turn in to Scalecommander Azurathel and collect the

This concludes Chapter 6: Wrath of the Storm-Eater and your adventures in the Forbidden Reach.
Chapter 7 - The Obsidian Warders/The Dark Talons
The final chapter of your beginning campaign represents the first time you'll get any noticeable difference between the Alliance and Horde Dracthyr starter experiences, and that's mostly due to the location. The quests are pretty much identical, although in a couple cases the quest names are a bit different.
You will now find yourself standing at either the gates of Stormwind with Wrathion or the gates of Orgrimmar with Ebyssian, depending on your faction.

Gain entrance to Stormwind or Orgrimmar.
You, some other assorted Dracthyr, and your draconic escort appear at the entrance to your main faction city, where you encounter guards and a leader who will eventually let you enter the city. Turn in to Scalecommander Azurathel (Alliance) or Scalecommander Cindrethresh (Horde) before proceeding inside.

Explore the city. Visit the Auction House, Bank, Embassy, and Portal Room.
Wait for a dialogue where you are admitted entrance. It's not as bad as the Death Knight reception, but you aren't exactly afforded a warm welcome from all the residents.
You may also wish to pick up

at this point so you can fly on mounts to make getting around the city easier. While you can use

here, regular flying is easier. You can also pick up any professions you want, but that can wait until later.
Alliance will need to finish at Stormwind Keep and report to Azurathel, /way 80.1 27.2
Horde will need to go to the Valley of Wisdom, upper level near the Tol Barad portal, /way 44.2 38.4, and report to Cindrethresh.

Make sure you do not miss out on the 8 mounts you can get in this starting zone, via the Dracthyr Quartermaster on the landing you have to constantly return to. You can get one base coloration for free via the questline, but afterwards can buy the remaining three base colors, as well as armored variants of the four colors.
Nice, quick, and easy way to push your account closer to your next mount achievement!

"it gets easier" no, it doesn't. The powerglide isn't enough to reach all these rings with my $%^&ty reflexes. "You too can be a dragon!" cries Blizzard's marketing team. "You too can spend an hour proving that you aren't worth dragonkind's time" says the dev who didn't bother to give this enough time to be done AND made sure it resets your counter when you're stuck landing.
"practice" forever while the world burns.

I guess i'm just stupid, but I completely missed how I chose Alliance. There I was, doing quests, talking to people, killing stuff and the next thing I knew I was in Stormwind. This guide doesn't help me either - Chapter 6 you're unaligned then <boom> Chapter 7 you're aligned. I was expecting a warning sound/box or at least some red text. I'm hoping i'll figure it out now I have to delete my first try and do it all over again. <sigh>

Aside from
Blue Magic Wand
in the Locked Library, I've found:
Bag of Enchanted Wind
in Scaleborn Pass
Hessethiash's Poorly Hidden Treasure
in Hessethiash's Hollow
Lost Dragonic Hourglass
in the Skyfox Den
Eviserated Argali
in the Lost Grotto
These mostly provide one-off buffs, although the poorly hidden treasure is a cape with an equip effect.
Enchanted Winds gives a Movement Speed buff.
Draconic Hourglass gives a Haste buff.
Argali gives a buff to the Dragon breath skill.
EDIT
Two more and that's all I guess:

Weapon Rack
This one may only be available before heading down into the healer's weryn, as later on my first playthrough this wasn't in the tower where I found in on another dracthyr. The area changes here too.

When will Worgen get something like the "Chosen Identity" skill?
EDIT: Join the Worgen Movement - spam Blizzard with suggestions (on your B-Net App) to given Worgen an appropriate version of this skill. Obvious;y worgen don't fly, but the leaving combat still applies.

I don't feel like I'll ever get out of the starting area. Has anyone else on a laptop with trackpad figured out how to come out of a dive? This raise your nose or lower your nose instruction is not helping. Well, I can lower it using CMD & trackpad, but I just hit the ground without ever getting my nose back up. Are there keybinds that might help? Ready to abandon playing a Dracthyr at all!
