I'm inclined to say it's more Blizzard's style to throw in a pop culture reference than a scientific one.

Given the names of the other Algalon achievements, however (Cosmic Smash, Big Bang, Quantum Strike, etc) the latter explanation is more likely true.

If it is intended as a nod to the Muse song it's not a very obscure one (since it was the first thing I thought of).

The reference is, without a doubt, simply to supermassive black holes.

Muse didn't create the term "supermassive black hole", cosmologists did...

Black Holes are formed when Collapsing Stars die, unleashing an explosion (10/25). They have a void zone type effect and are used to port out to escape the Big Bang (10/25).

This achievement seems to refer to the closing of Black Holes by kiting the Living Constellations into them - the kiting seems to be easily done by a mobile healer (e.g. tree druid).

I got this a few weeks ago. We had algalon to around 25% before the 3rd big bang so we stopped dps. this gave us time to screw with the stars. we actually weren't trying to get this achievement at the time, and were surprised when we got it.

I want to thank all of you. That I know of I have never heard the song Supermassive Black Hole or, indeed any song by Muse. I'm sure that the song and group are fine though. But in 9 comments by 9 different commenters there is not a single post that helps anyone wishing to get this achievement. Many are clever but a little help with the achievement would be far more clever. Clearly no one commenting has ever done it.

In case anyone should care, the bug is now fixed, so eventho you wipe, you can go back and get acheives. You can also fill one hole for example and then wait forthe 12 seconds are over and do another 3 within 12 seconds. - Still awarding acheivements.

Did this today (28 march). 2 pally tanks, 1 resto druid and me as arms. Simply kill 3 collapsing stars, if you are lucky they will spawn close to eachother and the kiting will be easier. We simply had the druid grab the stars by healing agro, both me and the tank currently not tanking Algalon, taunted 1 Living Constellations each and then all 3 of us kited the Living Constellations into the black holes then we killed the boss. Very easy achievement.

Soloed as a level 90 BM Hunter on the second try. Just DPS boss, untill you get the oportunity to shoot down 3 or more stars close to each other, then kite the constelations once they spawn.
If you dont have the black holes close enough, just wait untill you have more holes.
Save your burst to use when boss is with less than 1000K hp.

NEVER EVER STEP ON A BLACK HOLE or you will die instantly.

Let your pet tank close to the walls all the time, so you have more room to play with constelations, and cleaner field of view.

Tips: Get all the glyphs that upgrades the mend pet, keep it up all the time, and always move your pet out of black holes. I used a turtle.

If your pet is taking too much damage, and you think he isnt gonna survive, taunt boss with distracting shot, till your mend pets heal, then feign death.

Soloed this achievement today as a prot pally, in SoO gear, 567 iLvl.
~~Seems the tooltip on of the achievement isn't accurate~~. Says you need to defeat Algalon after closing 3 black holes. Managed to get the achievement as soon as the third hole was closed. After that I phased out with 5 stacks, the boss reset and I walked away. I've recorded the kill

Try to get 2 Collapsing Stars as close to eachother as possible and a third relatively close. Stand next to the double black holes and wait for the Living Constellations to come to you. Once you have 4 stacks of Phase Punch they'll come to you. Kite 2 directly into the 2 black holes you're standing next to. Then sprint to the last black hole.

May take some practice and luck, but the Constellation should hit that last black hole before you gain a 5th stack of Phase Punch.

Remember to not stand inside a Black Hole, or you'll be teleported to the shadow realm and Algalon will reset!

EDIT: As a comment on the video explained, and it's proven to be true, the achievement requires you to close 3 black holes in under 10 seconds, AND to kill Algalon. That can both be done seperately. You don't actually have to do it all in once. Kill him this week, and come back next week to close the black holes in the way explained above and seen in the video and you'll get the achievement, if you're interested in solo-ing it.
Goes for both the 10- and 25-man Supermassive achievements.

Post-squish, this achievement is pretty easy to get. The damage Algalon does isn't anything you'll need to worry about. See other comments regarding the positioning involved in closing out the black holes in time. It's a bit luck-dependent, but I was able to do this in 3 attempts. Afterwards, killing him took very little time at all.

As a druid you CAN solo this achievement. Here's how;

1. Spec into Force of Nature
2. do NOT damage Algalon yourself anyhow -- you have to keep your threat on the boss as LOW as possible.
4-5 seconds before he's using the Phase Smash or wtvr the tank debuff is, spawn a Force of Nature ON the boss and it will aggro the boss, soaking the stack
3. Try getting 2 stars ontop of eachother and kill them -- Watch out for Sun/Moonfire AoE with the boss (Legendary caps as well!) and in the second star thing get your third, kite the adds in it (Displacer Beast is good here) and finish the boss.

Got this achievement on 12th November with my Paladin. The boss will no longer despawn when you switch into the other phase. This makes the whole achievement a piece of cake. Destroy the Collapsing Stars, wait until you switch the phase and get back, destroy the new appearing stars and position yourself somewhere in the middle, wait for the Constellations and run around the prepared black holes. You still don't need to kill Algalon if you have killed him before.

Was able to solo this today with my Warrior.

Just try to get all the black holes as close together as possible, and hope for the best.

It depends where the holes end up, and then were the constellations end up coming from. It all seemed very random, and that you just need to get lucky with placement.

Btw: The boss will de-spawn if you go into the other realm. You can not step in any black holes, and you must not get to 5 stacks.

Also: You do not have to kill the boss on the same attempt as you close the holes: the two events do save separately.

As a lvl100 hunter I switched to BM and summoned my pet. At the start of the fight I misdirected to my pet and feigned. For the rest of the fight Algalon stayed on my pet. This allowed me plenty of time to create black holes and pull the constellations to them. At the end I had about 8 black holes open, with 3 of those holes overlapping. I was able to pull constellations to these 3 holes and finish that part of the achievement. Then I killed Algalon. If you have a lot of holes open you might not see a hole get closed so I suggest you track the achieve so you can see when you have closed 3 holes.

For Anyone looking for a quick Strategy to get this achievement:

Kill Stars as close as possible to each other. When you have enough out (on 10 man he spawns 4 at a time, i'd kill all four just incase you cant manage one) run the stars over (The stars will prefer anyone with the phase punch debuff. I found that out the painful way when 2 manning it). Once that's done, nuke the boss.

Its possible to do solo but if you lag on this fight or have a bad case of Bad luck, i'd just bring a friend and switch off ever 3-4 stacks. Just make sure they know what your doing incase they get the stars. If you do bring a helper then i'd also just kill like 8 stars (2 sets) it makes the closing ALOT quicker, just make sure you don't get sucked in by getting too close to the holes.

Theres a lot of other strategies and methods to do this below but maybe this post will keep you from having to scroll down to the bottom to find them!

Put the achievement on track so you can see the progress.
Start the fight.
Shoot down the stars to create the black holes on the floor. Shoot down all 4 and try to wait a little until they are on top or close to each other.
Wait until Algalon casts cosmic stars or whatever it is.
Run around the black holes guiding the stars into them (I.e Make sure the black hole is between you and the star.). This will close it.
Do for 3 holes.
Check achievement and if that bit is complete nuke down Algalon.

Interestingly,
I started the fight and closed 3 black holes. The fight then reset after I phased but I noticed on the achievement (because I was tracking it) that it said I just needed to defeat Algalon. He respawned with the globe, I started the fight again and nuked him down. After he was defeated and walked away I was awarded the achievement. Weird.

Cannot do this achievement in separate attempts; not sure if they hotfixed it or what. Tracking the achievement shows 3 black holes closed, but when receiving the 5th stack of Punch and Algalon resetting, so does the achievement. :/

Edit: After giving up (instances were resetting in 10 minutes) and nuking him, it showed the "Defeat Algalon" portion completed, and returning after resets yielded a complete achievement after closing the portals. So I'm guessing those who it completed for upon closing the portals had already killed him prior.

If you want to do this in the cheesiest way imaginable:

Have a Brewmaster Monk place a Black Ox statue in the center of the room.
Do not touch Algalon or spam buffs/heals.
Collapse 3 stars near each other. Or many stars. Whatever.
Have the BrM stand on the other side of the black holes from the statue.
Have the BrM remove the statue.
Once the Living Constellations and black holes disappear, DPS normally

Having such a hard time soloing! I even get the black holes nearly on top of each other, but I get 5 stacks of the buff before the other things even fully come out to follow me.

I just got 2 in and the third was like, right on the black hole but veered away. Then wiped, I had 4 stacks, didn't even show 5... I'm about to just give up ~_~

This is definitely so much easier if you have a pet to tank Algalon. Did it with my mage by switching spec to Frost and having my elemental pull Algalon to the edge. This basically allowed me to have all the freedom I wanted to align multiple waves of stars / black holes.

As Ret 110.
May take many attempts. Pull boss with Hand of Reckoning. Kill 2 black holes close to each other, kill one more as close as you can. Stand around afk untill living constellations spawn. Make sure to have the achievement tracked using the ingame Shift+Lclick. Kite around the first two black holes until you start seeing the timer start tracking on the achieve, make sure you see 2/3 before use Divine Steed to move to the 3rd one.
- moving into the black holes causes a reset
- getting 5x Phase punch causes a reset
- try not to accidentally kill Alagon.
This achieve took me maybe 30-45mins to get the perfect attempt because the blackholes move around randomly.

I just managed this on my lvl 98 shadow priest after many failed attempts. I basically only managed to get it because the RNG was in my favour and the collapsing stars happened to be close to each other. Most of the time they were really spread out. Mindbender + Fade helped me a lot, because it got Algalon off my back at the critical point when I needed to kite the constellations into the black holes. I agree with what others have said about this achievement being close to impossible without quite a bit of luck and a pet to tank.
