For miners:

These drop off all TBC nodes (Fel Iron, Adamantite, Rich Adamantite, Khorium). It is possible to get more than one residue per mining node, although you're limited to only one per hit.

EDIT: I've managed to get up to three residues from a single deposit so far. Completely luck based, but it happens. Great news for miners.

The Residue drops off any kind of Outland vein, herb, or skinnable mob. The drop rate appears to be around 20-25%, and the items are considered quest items, thus can't pile them up in your bank for future dailies.

The drop rate seems to be pretty terrible off Adamantite in Nagrand for me.

I'm not complaining because I'm getting payed an extra 17g to go farm ore, but it seems as though it does take some time to complete like the Netherwing gathering quests.

Since my initial question has been downrated, I assume that it's safe to say that this item is not obtainable by mining or herbing the corpses of creatures. I killed upwards of twenty earth elementals in Nagrand and didn't receive any residue from mining their corpses.

Skinning is probably the fastest way of gathering the Nether Residue, killing Bull Clefthoof's next to Garadar in Nagrand, it only took me about 8 minutes to get 8 of them, and you get Thick Clefthoof at the same time, good also with Wind Serpents or Nether Dragons.

I'm a Herbalist and combined this quest with 'Mana Berries' from Cooking and 'Sunfury Attack plans'. When i'd finished my quest i had 22 Netherbloom which shows a pretty decent drop rate. Even luckier for me, half of the herbs had a Fel Lotus in :-)

When I did this on Isle of Quel'Danas I got 1 from Ever mine I found. I don't know it is just luck or 100% drop rate there ( Viens are very rar there seens it is like a horde of people there 24/7)

My main (herbalist) has collected residues from Mana Thistles found on the Isle of Quel'Danas. And Koffein right above me says you can get them from ore veins there too. (I can't think of anything there that you're able to skin, but maybe I'm forgetting something?)

In general, it seems the higher the skill needed to pick the herb, the greater the chance of it dropping a Nether Residue. Mana Thistle, Netherbloom, and Nightmare Vine all drop it every 2 or 3 nodes I collect, while Felweed and Dreaming Glory often take 8 or 10 nodes to drop a single residue.

Unfortunately 'herb' type nodes from quests do not have the residue. So if you were, for example, planning to do the "Manalicious" Cooking Quest where you collect Mana Berries, I can say definitively that out of 15 collections there was not a single residue dropped.

For the first time while in Zangarmarsh I looted one of these things off of a Flame Cap.
I would NOT recommend trying to get them from Zangarmarsh though because in my many hours spent their while with the quest and this is the first one i have looted.

OK, I may be completely wrong but I'm getting the distinct impression that the likelihood of a drop is at least partially based off the skill required to skin/herb/mine.

I've been doing this quest every day since 2.4 came out on three different toons - a skinner, a herbalist & a miner.

The skinner rarely gets a drop on 60 mobs (require 300 skill to skin), about a 25% droprate on 65's (require 325) and about a 50% droprate from 70 mobs (350 skill).

I've found I rarely get a drop out of Fel Iron (req 300 skill) on my miner, but will generally get at least one drop out of Adamantite Ore (req 325) & quite frequently get two out of Rich Admantite (req 350).

Ditto for the herbalist when comparing Fel Weed (300) to Netherbloom (350).

Hypothesis aside, of all the professions this is definitely most annoying for herbalists... skinners can kill things quickly & on demand (the quest is virtually free money/rep for skinners), miners get somewhere between 2 & 6 chances of getting a drop for every node they find (given the competition for nodes it's not brilliant, but not bad)... whereas herbalists only get one chance for every node they find (and maybe it's just my server, but there are an awful lot of herbalists farming the 'high end' herbs out there...).

In short: Go to Netherstorm or Shadowmoon Valley. Just not on my server, 'k? I'm farming there =)

For skinners who are looking to make some extra money while doing this quest, I reccomend the Nether Rays and Phase Hunters in Netherstorm, to pick up some motes of mana while completing this. If you're doing the other Shattered Sun dailies you'll already be in the area to get the Sunfury Attack plans.

For herbalists:
Since Zangarmarsh is gonna give you ZILCH for nether residue at the moment, my favorite place to farm these is the Eco-Domes in Netherstorm. I may have been lucky, but the spawns for herbs seemed relatively close together and there are barely any aggressive mobs. Just hop on your flying mount and circle around the Stormspire or Eco-Dome Midrealm for easy nether residue. ^^

Hereby confirming that Nether Residue can be gathered from Ragveil in Zangarmarsh.
Though it seems very rare that you'll get it from Ragveil, atleast open it to check, if you don't want to have the herb itself.

Don't know if this is just luck or something.. but on Rich Adamantite Vein I received 7 in a row with 7 ore, 100% chance of the drop. Could be they upped the chance of getting this in patch 2.4.1

As a miner I have pretty good luck on the nodes. But if skinners can gather them from skinning animals shouldn't miners/herbs be able to get them from the elementals we mine/herb? I've killed/mined tons of these and not once have I got a drop from mining an elemental. Just a thought..has anyone else been able to get one this way?

This isn't too bad if your a miner. Not sure if I'm imagining things or have just had peculiar luck, but I've found I mine these quickest in Netherstorm. Just about every admantite vein I hit up there tends to drop a residue and I've even seen 2 drop off one vein more than a couple times. All in all pretty quick and easy if you've got yourself a set of wings. Takes me about 30 mins tops to complete this quest now, which really all depends on your luck in finding available veins to mine.

Haven't tried as a skinner or herbalist yet.

You need these for the new 2.4 daily "Gaining the Advantage" in Shat. The patch just came out today, but so far it seems that these are exclusively bonus drops from gathering professions. Namely herbalism, skinning, and mining and only in the Outlands.

Yes. After picking up the quest I was getting about 1 each 10 kills in Shadow Moon Valley from the lizzards and boars there.
Skinning and Mining is producing this for sure..
Not seen any yet with herbalism. Although I did see fel lotus drop more now. You do need the quest.

Okay I have gotten two of these from herbalism now. One from a mana thistle and one from a flame cap. These have an extremely low drop rate! You have to have the quest in order to pick these, and they can't be sold in the auction house. They can only be found in outlands according to the quest.

For Skinning I recommend the Wrath Hound's at Forge Camp: Wrath, just north of Ogrila. Dual purpose, you banish demon and you skin the Wrath Hounds.

Ok- The Nether Residue is an Outlands ONLY drop, I farmed mana-thistle (Herbalism)from the Isle Of Quel'Denas for several hours and got none. to the guy up there that claims they do NOT drop in Zargarmarsh, you are wrong. They will drop off of any herb in outlands. I have performed herbalism on the Bog Lord types in Zangar and received the residue, but only very rarely- I have not tried the Flame Cap yet.

For those wondering, if you are an enchanter or any other non-gathering profession you cannot even pick this quest up- it is for GATHERERS only, You have to have the quest and you will still receive the quest item if you are in a raid group. I have not tried to kill the giant trees in Skettis, but I will in a little while and post my results. As far as I have seen SMV and Netherstorm have the highest drop rate. If you read the quest you will see the text "Master Gatherers in their field will know the signs" - I have tried to verify that there s something different about the herbs that contain the item (A glow, different animation etc.) and have come up empty handed- there seems to be no discerning factor visually.

These currently do not drop from gathering herbs in Zangamarsh.

34 gathers did not result in a single residue drop while gathers in other zones (Nagrand, Terrokar, Netherstorm) resulted in 8 residues across 15 gathers.

A ticket was opened and the GM stated it was a known issue and they're looking to get it fixed.

Has anyone noticed a lowered drop rate since the patch first released? Is that even possible? My very first day out skinning I got all 8 in a matter of minutes. Now it seems I have to not only spend a good amount of time farming, but I generally feel the need to move from area to area when the mobs stop dropping them. Anyone else feel this way. (BTW I've been feeling this with all the new dailies since the new patch, first day or two it all went fast and smooth, now it's taking forever to finish)

For any of you that may think this does not apply to the Isle of Quel'danas.....Its not outlands only......its attached to things that are in outlands....read the quest language.

"Those herbs, ores, and beasts unique to outland may all bear the residue."

The Isle of Quel'Danas is kept on a separate server than azeroth or outlands...but it shares outlands' loot tables, that means that all drops in outlands are able to be found on the isle. Nodes such as khorium and adamantite and herbs such as mana thistle and w/e will have a chance of dropping it......because there are no "BEASTS" on the isle, you will never see a drop from any of the mobs.

For miners, I've had the best results at the Ango'Rosh stronghold in North-West Zangarmarsh. At least one residue from every deposit I've mined there and quite often two.

My miner has gotten up to three residue off of one node; when I do the quest on him it goes very fast. A guildy of mine said he actually got four once. My herbalist, on the other hand, has spent up to two hours trying to do this quest (I did do some of it in Zangar, but did get some residue eventually off of something there).... though a skinning friend cackled happily it took him 20 minutes. Something is screwed up there.

I used to hate this quest as a miner. I noticed since the most recent patch that I've been able to get at least one per node now, and I got 4 from a rich adamantite node. I've done the quest every day since the patch and have actually been able to turn it in each day, unlike when the quest first came out. Perhaps the Blizz gods actually listened to my QQing....

Seems to depend on the level of the zone rather than the level of the item you're gathering. For example, in Bladesedge Mountains I killed about 10 level 71 boars and got no residue, while in Netherstorm in one of the eco-domes I was killing cats and crocodiles and getting about 1 in 3 when skinning.

I got all 8 with 2 adamantite ore nodes. The first was in zangar by the cave to blades edge, and the other was on the other side of the wall in blades edge. every time you use your skill you get 1 ore 1 residue. These were the first 2 i tried, so i think it must be pretty close to 90-100% drop

I think the drop rate may have been improved in a patch because I skinned 10 hellbore outside Thrallmar and got 8 nether residues.
