Anyone know if this still reduces the cost of lower ranks of Lightning Bolt by the full 25 mana? (This could be tested with the HFP one also...)
Would it be able to make rank 1 cost 0 mana? And rank 2 cost 2 mana (talented)
If it does make R1 free... can it put you outside the 5 second rule so you can spam R1 while spirit regening...
Or you can fire completely free R1's for crits to spend on max rank.
It can also be spammed with the trinket that stacks mp/5 on spellcast over a short period... it's in kara somewhere...
It's fantastic for a shaman who can spam r2 bolts and stack a huge amount of mp/5 over a short period, it's effectively evo + low dmg for a shaman. With this totem you can get a little bit of spirit gen in there too...

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the totem from cache of the legion in Mechanar just as good for PvE damage, and even i terms of mana conservation?

Max damage from unimproved lightningbolt = 652
Mana cost for said bolt = 330

With this totem, which grants 25 less mana cost for a lightningbolt it goes down like this:

652/305 = 2,1377... = ~2,14 DPM

now let's do this with the totem from Mech which gives +55damage to lightningbolt (and chain lighnting).

707/330 = 2,1424.... = ~2,14 DPM

So tecnically it's just the same? or are my math skills that bad? ;)

IMO spend badges on Mazthoril, Cloak or DMG Trinket. I mean this is an epic item which costs 25 badges, I would like to see atleast the double amount of mana reduced for this to be worth it.

This totem is great for long boss fights.
LB rank 12 costs 270 mana with talent, so this totem saves 10% per LB cast. With clearcasting LB costs 162 mana, in this case totem saves you ~16.5% per LB cast.

I'm confused... this says "Equip: Reduces the mana cost of lightning bolt by 10." This is a level 70 epic relic for shaman, which to me means that it is probably challenging to attain.

Then, this item, Totem of Lightning is a level 63 green quest reward that says, "Equip: Reduces the mana cost of your Lightning Bolt spells by 15."

I certainly they change this to be more of an 'epic' calibre item...

Wow a WHOLE 10 mana, my god think of how much use 10 mana is when your regain rate should be much more than that anyway. 10 mana really sucks and i dont see how it can be epic quality. Im not certain either but im preety sure that theres a totem reward from a hellfire quest that reduces the amount be either the same or neraly the same as this, and thats a green level 60ish item. This is a 70 epic ffs, how is this epic i ask you. This isnt worth equipping let alone wasting time to buy. Unless they got the wording wrong like said before and its really 10%, even then its only 32, but thats way better than 10 and then it might be called an epic item, because this really isnt. Yes theres a totem from hellfire thats a quest reward that reduces the lightning spells by 15, and its green, this is epic and it does 10!
Look for yourselves if you dont believe me, easy to do, go on to the armour search page and put in totems green quality, theres only one to see and its better than this. This is not epic, get it sorted blizzard cause a green 60 item is better than this.

Probably the -24 mana cost is nice for elemental shammies. I have an enhancement shammy with backup healing (or spellcasting) gear that gives her about 100 MP5 ,that's 40 mana per tick WHILE casting. If she was specced Elemental, that'd bring her up to around 130 MP5, that's about 52 mana per tick while casting. If the mana reduction was any much higher, lightning bolts will be pretty much more like a Holy Paladin's Flash of Light spam heals, which it already is with all that Lightning spellcrit%, Totem of Wrath and Elemental Focus. Main difference is no way to gain mana through abilities (paladin's Div Illum + Div Favor) although the MP5 is already like a Blessing of Wisdom.

So the MP5 you'd have (hopefully a lot) and this totem basically makes your mana pool last longer than non-elementalists/shammies w/o this totem.

When the patch goes live and it gets boosted to 24 mana per LB, it will be good for raiding elemental shamans.

Spamming LB = 2.5 LB every 5 seconds, so you're saving (or generating) 24*2.5 = 60 MP5 while spamming LB. Not bad IMO.

The alternative for elemental is Totem of the Void, which boosts DPS a lot, but doesn't help mana efficiency.

The solution: Use ToV for trash pulls and short bosses, and ToPE for long boss fights when you expect to go OOM.

Whateverworks2, you obviously haven't been in many long boss fights, have you? Mana effiency is everything for elemental shamans against karazhan bosses. Sure, if you crit a few times in a row, you're saving the mana on a few spells, but for those times you don't, you could be in trouble. Just look at the Prince fight. It's like a 7 minute fight. Not difficult to run out of mana.
I personally have a mana pool of 9k and a straight spell crit of 20.01%. But I gotta tell you, last time we did that fight, I was really scrapin for bolts at about 3%. Now if my bolts were 24 less mana? It woulda made a huge difference.

This saves my shaman 23 per cast. Not 25 per cast as the tooltip says.

Test it and see for those that have it.

Total savings is 57.5 mp5, not 62.5 as one would think.

297 per cast without it.
294 per cast with it.
99 per cast without it and Elemental Focus.
91 per cast with it and Elemental Focus.

if you go back and look at several quest rewards in hellfire, you will notice they are better then some quest rewards in places like nagrand ect... i just leveled my shaman up, and when i noticed this it really pissed me off

Sadly, this totem is 25 mana reduction per bolt only if you're not elemental specced. Take the talent that reduces Lightning Bolt mana cost by 10%, and you also lower the effect of this totem by 10% (23 mana less per bolt). If you have that talent (and what elemental shammy wouldn't?) and you also have a clearcast proc up (40% less mana on next 2 bolts), the totem lowers the cost on those 2 bolts by only 13 mana, a reduction in its effect by 50%, rounded up.

It's still a very good totem especially if you're raiding in a group with no shadow priest and your gear is lacking in the mp5 department, but personally I think having the talents and clearcasting reduce its effect is a bit lame.

This totem has it's uses. In extremely long fights (VW, Mag) this can help quite a bit on mana efficiency. If a shaman has a smaller mana pool (less than 7500) or a low crit rating (less than 17%) this can be very useful. But if your mana pool is that small, or your crit that low, YOU probably are not very useful.
