Although I agree that this staff and the earthwarden are excellent tanking weapons they both have there strengths and weaknesses and would be desired dependent on the other Items in the druid's gear set.

For example the earthwarden has more armor and 24 defense, this staff will give stamina and agi that will increase your chance to crit and dodge (~15 agility = 1% dodge). If a druid has enough defense/resilience to reduce the chance to be crit upon to less than zero (FYI: a level 70 mob will have a 5% chance to crit on you. A druid with Survival of the Fittest will only need to get there Defense to around 420 to wipe crits off the table) then you will want to start focusing on dodge to further mitigate damage. Thanks to the rubber band effect on armor the difference in mitigation between these two items are 1.3% which is marginal enough to where I believe this should not be a decision maker on these items IF the druid is already around or above a 60% mitigation. In this scenario, it is the weight of the Defense versus the Dodge and Stamina.

There are some that believe that druids should not dodge because that robs them of rage, however if the druid focuses on agility rather than +dodge then he will be increasing his crit percentage as well as lowering his damage taken. By increasing your crit, you will be gaining more rage thanks to the Primal Fury talent. And “The way WoW calculates crit rate is over ALL attacks. Crit rate is not based on hits only. In other words, if you have a 5% crit rate, that 5% chance includes misses.” (Blizzard rep in June of 2005: http://www.wowwiki.com/Attack_table) This means that you will be compensating for the rage lost by being hit by critting more and it will increase you chance of hitting your mob overall. And healers will appreciate a dodge that will mitigate 100% of the damage over a 1.8% damage reduction.

Summary: Shot for 60-65% Damage mitigation, 420 Defense or the equivalent of removing the chance to be crit upon, and the rest should go into agility and stamina (IMO). That should help you decide between these two weapons. (Or hell, carry them both. You gear will change over time so one may be more useful than the other in the future)

I'm running botanica in my spare time to get this but not majorly. Next patch each heroic end boss will drop a guranteed epic item as well as chance at a gem so hopefully it will then be an even drop rate between this and his other two epics (33% hopefully).

After the huge upgrade on Earthwarden (+39 sta & 3 def rating), this staff is not on par with it anymore.

The changed will be made in pacth 2.1 which is on PTRs atm.

anyone knows what the staff looks like after the lvl 70 epic item revamp? i think all epic heroic items were upgraded to itemlvl 110. this staff is currently itemlvl 95 ....

This finally dropped for me on my first Heroic Bota since the patch... (after about a month of farming for it!)
Cleared the whole instance in about an hour - much easier now the Peacekeepers don't blitz you for 8k arcane dmg any more (their main attacks are now normal melee for around 2-3k in bear)

Lovely staff with the 35agi enchant added - will keep me tied over till the SSC trash give up the Wildfury Greatstaff..

This staff can be very easily obtained, get a resto druid, 3 rogues, and a feral druid (feel free to bring a moonkin druid or another feral druid if you like instead of 3 rogues). You must clear the trash all the way up to the bats and 3 packs before the 1st boss, then from there, its so easily stealth able with 1-2 distracts its not even funny... took me about 30 minutes from start to finish, wound poison also helps on warp splinter, so you can forget about the adds =) have fun and good luck

I don't know whats up with this staff, but I've ran this instance probably 50 times trying to get this staff to drop since the last patch with no success. Everybody I know has seen the staff drop a few times and DE it because no druid was in the party before patch. I don't see how this is so easily obtained.

Anyone have any information if the drop rates or anything have changed ? I've seen the boots and gloves drop every other time, changing back and forth each run. Yet I have not seen anything of the staff...

This also dropped at my first attempt, so well it may not be %100 but very high --considering my all time roll and drop bad luck streak :b

Also this is much more useful for Cat form, since the str+agi & +ap works for it much better. I still use Earthwarden while tanking and this one for dps.

Also it becomes awesome with a +35agi, i'd say don't mind the cost at all and go for the ench.. It's worth it.

Just finished heroic bot run #38 and still no drop. This staff has an unusually low droprate, that's for sure. Hardly anyone on my server as even seen it. If you're a druid and wanting this, pray you're lucky or be prepared for a long grind.

Finally got this after 69 Heroic Botanica runs (4 months+). The drop-rate is absolutely terrible. If you PvP at all, I would suggest getting the PvP feral wep.

I have huge problem with droppin rate .. done 40 times by now heroic botanica and over 20 times kara illihoof .. none wont drop when i am leading with my drood raid or heroic run

made complain for gms about dropping rate only answer i get .. everything works as intended . I am not happy for situation when not dropping even used weeks for trying to get em :) missing dps staff i hope 2.4 brings some help when having over 300 badges allready

For end game stats FSOL is a step above Earthwarden for mitigation reasons.

First off earthwardens +def is useless on a endgame druid who will be crit immune with trinkets or just 2 pvp set bonus. The expert on earthwarden is no substitue imo for the +2% extra dodge and crit hit from the 35 agi on FSOL. The loss of 200 armor as well will not mean much at all if you are at 32k armor already. The best feral tank druid weapon in the game lacks +armor for a reason since blizz knows you will not need it when you are past black temple.

Earthwarden is the best druid weapon to start heroics and raids but looses its shine on lack of endgame stats.

Looks like the best hunter staff u can get if ur using staves. Stam, agi, and str (for ur pet). Obviously the equip effect doesnt do too much, but otherwise its pretty good

The head of the staff is a Dragon head, and the tongue lashes in and out like a snake, and flops around from side to side as you move.

Looks really cool.

When enchanted, the eyes and tongue get the effect and color, looks awesome with fire because it then looks like the dragonhead is breathing fire..

Dropped for me last night off Warp Splinter in Heroic mode Botanica.

Overall, all the bosses in Heroic were the same as normal just hit harder and more often (especially the 3rd boss, he does that Hellfire AOE alot more and it really hurts)

As for Warp Splinter, the best way to kill him in Heroic is the same as normal, ignore the adds and focus as much DPS as you can on him. His stomp hit me for around 1500 - 2000 and the arcane bolts were hitting for upto 4000. Took us about 3 attempts to get it all down, luckily you can still reset him by running up his ramp.

When I get home I will try to get a picture of the staff and send it in.

you know, the armor loss compared to Earthwarden would only be 1100 in the upcoming patch (200 * 5 bear multiplier * 1.1 talent bonus) but it gives 29 Agility, which is 2% dodge and 58 armor (hey, a bit), not to forget the 33*10*1.25=412 HP, and has more AP which gives you a better chance to still hold aggro after the nerf... then again, you lose the +def and +feral skill rating... tough decision

ive done botanica heroic many times and ive never seen it drop i dont really care about the staff just the badges but could use it from time to time. ive seen some one above saying u need a balanced group for it and its not true i tanked the whole instnace with out CC and we never wiped tho i must say healing must be a pain

I have only ever seen this drop once.
I must have done it about 20+ times in total, so the drop rate of 15-20% seems to be way off based on what other people are saying.
Should you have 1000-2000g spare you could get a staff of Natural Fury from the AH instead, it's a similar item.

I got it on my 6th - 7th run, and was fortunate enough to get the Smouldering Shoulders from HC BF on the same day.

I would advise anybody who wants this staff to not got with anyone else who wants it!

The staff itself is the best staff both for tanking (assuming you have 25k+ armor) and cat DPS outside of raids. Awesome hybrid staff too.

I've been trying for this staff for months... MONTHS! It's hard enough to get a group for Heroic BOT for some reason and apparently its even harder to actually get lucky and have this drop! -_-

I'm thinking about grabbing the Earthwarden for now and continue to work towards aquiring this staff... Though, I have with a +35 agi on it. If I were to get the Earthwarden, I'd lose a FOOK load of dodge. I'm not sure if it is really even worth it.

I'm begining to think that Blizzard just claims to have put this staff in the "loot table" to con ppl into running heroic BOT. I've run this damn instance between 20-30 times and haven't seen it drop.

After looking at the differences between "Greatstaff of the Leviathan" vrs. "Earthwarden", I'm definately going to go with Earthwarden (for now). Especially after my win with the superbowl. I got about 2000g total waiting for me in my mailbox when I logon tonight. haha!

God damn Heroic BOT! DAMN IT TO HELL!

Good Hunter item? You can't be serious... If I was in a group and by some miracle this staff dropped and I lost a need roll to a hunter I'd probably have to go to best buy shortly after cause by keyboard would be in about 200 pieces.

See the little green description to the bottom of the stats? It clearly stats it's a druid staff. That is a horrible Hunter weapon.
