These plans are ideal for grinding out blacksmithing. Thorium bars tend to go for about 1G a piece, making leveling from 285 to 300 cost around 12-20G per level. These plans reduce that to about 7G per level, and make the 275-300 stretch quite a bit less painful. However, like Furyo stated, these plans are extremely difficult to come across, and take quite a bit of time to locate in the auction house.

Are you required to be a blacksmith at 250 to use this or can it be attached to shields of non BS characters such as a mithril spike?
This may explain why it's only an uncommon items vs. Mithril plans that are rare.

The blacksmith skill required (250) is only to install the spike on the shield. It's (275) skill required to actually craft it.Once installed there are no requirements. This add-on "overwrites" any previous enchantments. It does 20-30 dmg each time you block an attack.

The thorium spike requires essences of earth, hard to get and expensive, what makes this item far less profitable than mithril shield spikes. However, it's the best spike in the game, and in my opinion, best "enchantment" available for shields.

with specced increased block+str pally can get up to around 10% block + redoubt 30% + 30% holy shield with judged seal of the crusader JUST your block does around 150 dmg.

This OWNS rogues.

Throw on a shield spike with the shield that drops off the guy in baron that does also +dmg per block. probably could get up to 180+dmg per block.

problem is if youre a pally specced this way but you arent actually getting hit... so you dont trigger redoubt and holy shield just wastes mana.

with warriors getting beefed its not worth it for a pally to be specced like this after he hits 60.

Anyone notice how this is only a 'Green' item yet it's especially rare to find, while the lesser mithril shield spike plans are 'Blue' and a lot easier to come by. Seems Blizz has underestimated this item's worth.

By the way, found mine as random world drop off something in Azshara.

As I saw some replies wrongly stated I write this small article about what block is and how numbers interfere with it

Block is a passive action to subtract physical damage from incoming attacks.

-HOW MUCH DAMAGE DOES A BLOCK PROC SUBTRACT FROM ATTACKS?

Equal to the shield's block value plus 1 for every 25 strength points

-WHAT AFFECTS CHANCE TO BLOCK?

Mostly the DEFENSE skill (25 defense=1%) as well as items and certain talents

Given that the best shield enchant is
+2% block, and rarer than hens' teeth, a spike is better than nothing.

You could also go for +70 health enchant (+7 stam), but that make so little difference compared to the damage a spike will do even with 5% block.

i have this spike on my sheild for my pally.....i AoE Grind with him and it helps alot. if you dont believe that pallys can AoE grind go look it up on google/youtube....this is an AWESOME spike besides the felsteel one but im not going to put a 50g spike on a sheild im only gonna use for 10 lvls or less. gl

With the drop in price for Essence of Earth since BC from 4-5 g to 40 silver (Tanaris server), the profit margin on Thorium Shield Spike went from 4-5 g to over 12 g per spike. I found one in a Thorium Lockbox, and bought two others on the AH just to maintain my monopoly on the AH. The first one cost me 1g (I almost felt guilty), but the other cost 80 g. I only see them come up every few months, so it was well worth it as I sell about five of them a week for 18 g each.

I just got one of those from a Thorium lockbox and put it onto AH for 7g.
I logged off and looked on here to see how much it was actually worth.
Logged back on, canceled the auction and repriced it at 57g... sooo lucky. LOL!

I received these as a quest reward from completing "Lard Lost His Lunch" in Reventusk.
I am not a blacksmith so I figured I would AH them. Looked them up on Thottbott to see a possible price. I was in shock to see 118g. I put it in the AH for 100g just to see if it would sell.
I told my friends who have been playing WOW much longer than I have what I had done and they were slightly sceptical at such a high price I think.
The next day there was 95g in my mail. It had sold for a bit under my max but I am not complaining. Unbelieveable. Hope to see some thorium spikes at the AH now.

If you can get your hands on this while you are training blacksmithing, make these instead of thorium resistance gear (Thorium Helm, Thorium Boots etc.). I did, and i had saved around 400 Thorium Bars for the 280-300 streak, and used only 80.

Just picked these plans up this morning for 85g and it felt like a steal. I NEVER see these on the AH, and the other spike plans cost about 75g (mithril) and 25g (iron). Very nice compared to the felsteel spike, which has an insane rep grind and mat requirements. It's also a plus for warriors using shield slam. Whisper Chancelot on Rexxar if you want one made for you (Alliance).

I picked up a copy of these plans off one of the elementals a week ago - I cannot remember if it was a Rock elemental or an Air elemental; one of the two though, since it was all I was hunting for essences.

As weird as it is, I got these plans as a reward for a tailoring quest! In the quest named The Undermarket (黑市交易 one of the rewards is a bag of stuff that usually contains tailoring items. Well, mine contained the usual spider's silk/etc, but also these plans.

Dont bother trying to farm these. its one of those patterns that is so rare, it will never drop unless you dont expect it to, and then only VERY rarely heh. played a few characters to 60, 1 to 70, working on another 60 right now and i never even seen this pattern, and im a blacksmith.
