If you're an enchanter you're going to run into a huge need for Nether Essence right around the 250-260 skill level. Unfortunately it's tough to come by and expensive at the AH (7gp apiece on my realm). But I've found a way to manufacture the stuff, provided you have a little patience and also have access to tailoring skills.

The key is Black Mageweave Headband (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=10024). This headband has a 20% droprate for Greater Nether Eseence when disenchanted, but there is a good chance to receive more than one per disenchant! So go to Dunemaul (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=5471) in Tanaris and farm the ogres (all variants) there for mageweave, you can get up to x3 pieces per kill, you'll get a drop on nearly every kill, and they respawn very quickly. In about an hour I managed to get 8 stacks. Bolt these pieces using tailoring, and make Black Mageweave Headband (3 bolts + 2 Heavy Silken Thread). Out of about a dozen headbands I got 5 Greater Nether Essence.

If you have access to lots of heavy leather you can also make Black Mageweave Boots which have a disenchant rate of like 25% for Greater Nether Essence.

I soloed Uldaman on this advice and there's simply no way you could have gotten 20 pieces of Greather Nether Essence there. Clearly the green drops are not even in the required level range, only a couple of blue drops stand a small chance of disenchanting into Greather Nether Essence, and about five blues have around 16% chance of DE into Lesser Nether Essence.

Just look at the drop list for Uldaman: https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/zone=1337

However, I did get a couple of Large Radiant Shard (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=11178) so it wasn't a totally wasted effort. Just nothing in the way of Nether Essence.

but just to add a further note * I managed to get to skill level 250 enchanting just by using tailor made items these include-

These 4 itemz will DE into all the mats needed to get you to skill level of about 260

Also note this method is essentially free if you have enough linen cloth, wool cloth, silk cloth and mageweave and can be leveled at the same time you level your tailoring. i however ended up buying alot of the cloth and the results were around 33% cheaper than straight up buying the mats needed excluding the runecloth because of the ammount needed to get the right mats

Despite what you may see here, it does take three Lesser Essences to create a Greater Essence. What you see here is actually a quirk of the way Blizzard handles the spell. On Blizzard's end, a two-step process occurs:

You use the first Lesser Essence, destroying it in the process.
A spell is cast, which destroys the other two Lesser Essences, and creates a Greater Essence.

This spell here--step two--is the spell that gets listed here on Wowhead.

best way i found.... atleast on my server is to go on the AH and search level 41-45 armor, and buyout anything from 1-1.5g... it seems that at any given point there are 10-15 items in there, and by disenchanting all of the items i normally end up with 3-4 greater nethers and some Vision/Dream dust.

As i said that is on my server, im not sure about other servers.

it is great to farm and sell on my server....ill scan the auction house looking for weps lvl 42-45 tht are 4g or cheaper and i will de them and 1/3 of the times i get 2 of these and they sell for 5g each easily so u can make a huge profit off these if done correctly!

Both Auctioneer and Fizzwidget's Disenchant Predictor can help you find Weapons and armor that have a higher than normal chance to drop Greater Nether Essences. Most armor and weapons give you a 20% chance to drop GN, but some give 80%. This is almost never factored into the price of the weapon.

By mousing over everything in the right level range, you can quickly find these hidden nuggets and be assured of greater profits! I still buy the items that only give 20% chance, but I have a lower price that I'm willing to pay and the weird thing is that there is almost never a premium for the "better" item.

I've had far better success finding Greater Nether this way than, for example, Greater Eternal Essences. Probably because more folks scan the AH for stuff in the range that drops GEs.

These are nice, and sell for about 10-13g on my Exodar each.

You can buy 40-50 greens for less than that, so you can make a profit.

I'm not sure how it is on other servers, but on my server these things are solid money-makers. They regularly sell in the AH for 4g-5g apiece. The secret is to purchase Uncommon (green) weapons of level 41-45. They almost ALWAYS disenchant into 1-2 Greater Nether Essence (I've gotten Dream Dust one or two times). Considering that you can find qualifying weapons to disenchant for a 2g buyout, that leaves a hefty profit margin.

Certainly is a lot easier than disenchanting armor, which normally drops dust of one kind or another.

From past experiences I would easily Nightscape pants are the way to go if you want to get greater nethers, they drop them quite frequesntly.
From a load of 6 pants I got as follows: 3 dream dust, 6 greater nether essence, 2 large radiant shards. Not guaranteeing anything this good, but I infact got that from 6 Nightscape pants

Ok Nether essences will come from green/blue items between level 41 and 50. Best places to farm for these are in ZF and ST, with ST being my personal favorite since I've had more green items drop there than in ZF. Also another thing I've noticed but won't claim to be a fact of wow life is that the higher the level the item (within the given parameters) the more of an item they will DE into. For instance a level 41 item will DE into one essence or upwards of two to three vision dusts. Where as a level 49 item will DE to around three esssences and upwards of 4 dusts.

I have had great success making a profit in this manner:

At the auction house, search for weapons level 40-45.
I usually pay no more than 5g per weapon.
Each weapon disenchants into two greater nether essence, sometimes one.
The essences sell for upwards of 5g per on my server.

So, if you are lucky, you can usually make a 5g profit per weapon purchased.

Just some fun common sense economics :)

this sounded like a good deal, DE weapons and get 8g per nether. well, it's crap. the percentage of the drop from a weapon is high, granted but not 100%. more like 60%. I farmed ogres in tanaris, made up a bunch of headbands and got more from that. bad luck? go figure. it cost a hell of a lot less, too. just a bit of coin for some thread and a friendly guild tailor. the ogres drop mageweave like cake and pie, had almost 8 stacks in an hours time. that's about 10 headbands or so.

then again, if you've got the money, hit up the Ah for the nether themselves. 8g a pop here on skywall.

Black Mageweave headbands for Nether essences? NO! Ive been making those #&%$@#$ headbands all day and only got 1 greater nether essence. Blizzard changed it with 2.4 cause I havnt gotten more than 1. I asked around and others confirmed it.

Im finding it impossible to find these things! Level 40 to 45 weapons cost at least 5G and nether essences cost at least 12G on Turalyon! I have enough dust to fill un'goro crater but no essences!

I don't know of any tailored items that produce essences regularly. Based on the data I have been collecting on my own enchanting, the best chance would be a weapon in the lvl 41-45 range. Lesser would drop on 36-40 lvl weapons.
Hope this helps. Even though you could get it on armor the highest rate for essences are on weapons. You might get a shard on just about anything but lvl 36-40 would produce a Small Radiant shard and lvl 41-45 would make a Large Radiant shard.

According to thottbot (I know this is Allakhazam, but they've got DE info over there), Black MW Headband DEs into Greater Nether Essences 29.8% of the time and Large Radiant Shards 6.4% of the time. It's the best by almost a full % for the Essence and by 0.7% on the Shard for green tailored items. Plus it only requires 15 MW and 2 Heavy Silken Thread each, so it's pretty efficient.
