Welcome to Wowhead's Best in Slot Gear list from Phase 3 Black Temple and Mount Hyjal for Protection Paladin Tank in The Burning Crusade Classic. This guide will list the recommended gear for Protection Paladin Tank to acquire while they progress during the third phase of The Burning Crusade Classic, and contains gear sourced from Black Temple and Mount Hyjal, plus other pieces from previous phases like Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep, heroic dungeons, arena PvP Gear, professions, BoE World Drops, and reputations.
Best In Slot Gear for Protection Paladin Tank in Phase 3
Phase 3 is a period of major upgrades for Protection Paladin, with some of the best itemization the game has to offer.
Lightbringer Armor
offers substantial upgrades in every slot, with a significant 4set that will see our already strong AoE capabilities reach new heights, phase 3 also introduces to us very strong off set items such as

which can rival their tier counterparts in many respects.
These sets are specifically modeled on

due to his unique place as a phase 3 endboss, he is the hardest and one of the fastest hitters in the tier outside of Illidan. He is an imperfect example, but a very interesting one to build your gear around, because if you can tank Archimonde, you can tank every other boss in phase 3 with the same gear, save Illidan himself who follows a different and unique ruleset.

Because protection paladins are reliant on layers of avoidance to reach requisite status to tank bosses, it is highly recommended that you do not immediately throw away gear as you get new pieces. Though an item may be listed on this guide as an upgrade, it may not immediately fit well into your current set. You will often have to make small changes to your sets to accommodate “upgrades” to maintain proper amounts of avoidance and crit immunity. Aldor vs. Scryer for Protection Paladin Tank in Phase 3
For Protection Paladins, the stat differences between the blue shoulder enchants for each faction are pretty marginal, with Scryers

The main differences between the factions come in the early game with regard to quest rewards and rep vendor items that can help you gear up much faster for tanking heroic dungeons and Phase 2 raids. In terms of reputation gain, The Scryers tend to be an easier faction to gain reputation with, so in that respect, Scryers are the superior option for those who want to obtain their shoulder enchants as quickly as possible.

as your go to off set piece in your head. This provides a major defensive boost for a relatively low cost out of any other headpiece in Phase 3. However, there is a caveat in gearing. Should you acquire

it's a good helmet which fills most of our needs, but the lack of avoidance is fairly restrictive later down the line, should you want to swap pieces.

There are no other real options here; Lightbringer Shoulderguards is strictly the best item in the slot.
Pauldrons of Abyssal Fury
are worth looking at, but it's by no means a mainstay item for your end phase 3 set. Until then, we recommend going with
Justicar Shoulderguards
. Our shoulder slot is, in general, pretty underwhelming, but this will at least give you some avoidance to tide you over.
At this stage in the game, the shoulder faction enchants are becoming more obsolete in their main purpose for a Protection Paladin, namely to allow us to reach our avoidance cap goal of 102.4% combined avoidance (miss, parry, dodge, block) in order to be out of reach from crushing blows and critical strikes while holy shield is up. That being said, above certain thresholds, hard avoidance can carry a lot of weight in overall damage reduction, this is why we still give it mentions but still recommend

which is new to this phase has a really good combination of stats, Ruby Drape of the Mysticant from Prince Malchezaar is the best single target threat cloak in the game that can be reasonable attained and
Royal Cloak of the Sunstriders
from Kael’thas Sunstrider is the best multi-target cloak in the game, but can be substituted with
Cloak of the Illidari Council

Worth noting that
Phoenix-Wing Cloak
from Al’ar has a little more avoidance than
Pepe's Shroud of Pacification
, so it may find itself useful in bridging gaps in your sets as you progress.

Lightbringer Chestguard
is much stronger than the alternatives.
Glory of the Defender
offers a great improvement in very desirable hard avoidance stats, but they are, however, not meaty enough to surpass the excellent stat spread on tier 6.

, while not recommended in any of our sets, is a good item, but somewhat low on overall avoidance and can be tricky to place. They are still worth acquiring, though, as when paired with
, they can offer a solid boost to your hard avoidance and stamina in exchange for total avoidance and threat.

Lightbringer Handguards
. Being one of the more stat-dense items in the entire game, they offer very lucrative and difficult-to-acquire hard avoidance, with good threat and a socket bonus to round out the versatility of these gloves. You will be wearing these for all of TBCC. The other real option is
Royal Gauntlets of Silvermoon
, it is a stamina beast, and as such will always be worth mentioning.

Girdle of Mighty Resolve
is the ideal item for us; it has everything we want.
Girdle of the Invulnerable
from Leotheras the Blindis still a relevant item; however, if you want to trade stamina and spell power for hard avoidance.
Girdle of Stability
doesn't really fit into any boss sets, but high Block Value might make this lucrative for you, who makes it a business to tank big packs, will shine on Hyjal Trash.

are the recommended legs, it has a balanced approach with a good amount of hard avoidance and spell power.
Praetorian's Legguards
are very good legs, should you want to retain 4-set tier 6, you will find that these legs are not very versatile and will lock you into your gear selection. Reserve these for the heaviest hitters where you need to maximize EHP and mitigation.

The 'Rings' section has been divided into two different categories in the toggler section- Mitigation and Threat- in order to provide a more organized list of recommended rings suited to a Paladin tank's gearing style. We'll provide a recommended "pairing", but as mentioned, this can change depending on the encounter.
Your best rings to pair together will be
Ring of Sundered
Souls with
Ashyen's Gift
. The former provides a healthy amount of all Survivability stats, while the latter provides great Threat.
There are drawbacks to our recommended BiS mitigation ring.
Band of the Eternal Defender
is a faction reward ring, meaning you should not reasonably be able to equip it and its threat counterpart at the same time aswell that as of right now, the proc effect
will override an existing

& similar effects, removing them.
A central theme of the best rings in this phase is that they are generally loaded on spell power, loaded on spell hit or a healthy combination of both. Since we have such long cooldowns, finding good sources of hit will see a noticeable impact on your threat output. This is why our number #1, 2 & 3 Threat rings are all essentially the same item with varying strength; use any or all as you please. There is no bad choice here.

We don't have many universally good items in these slots, we have very powerful but mostly circumstantial trinkets and we recommend that users be advised to change trinkets frequently based on the incoming pull. As such, there is no real shortcut to trinkets, and outside of stamina, one size rarely fits all.
Stamina Trinkets
Stamina trinkets are primarily recommended for maximizing HP only after Defense Cap (490 Defense) and Uncrushability (102.4% Avoidance + Block) have been reached.
Darkmoon Card: Vengeance
is the recommended BiS trinket for stamina, due to its high stamina and threat generation potential.

The
Tempest of Chaos
has great stats and will remain our PvE BiS for the remainder of TBCC. That being said, it is also a contested item; taking this over a caster can be pointless, since it is strictly for threat. Unless you are in danger of throttling or capping your DPS, you might want to hold off on this. So, if PvP is out of the question and taking contested items is a concern, we suggest
Hammer of Judgement
from Mount Hyjal and Black Temple trash, while worse is also better than anything phase 2 could offer.

All the shields in phase 3 are upgrades from phase 2, so we suggest respecting other shield classes in your raid when taking shields. It's better to just take one and then later worry about BiS. We recommend
Bulwark of Azzinoth
it's just a superb shield on all accounts. The proc really plays into our strengths as a multi-target tank. Being an endboss item, it has a greater stat budget than normal, making it a contender for the strongest shield in the game and also an excellent boss tanking shield.
