Discipline Priest Leveling Guide - TBC Classic

Whether you need leveling guidance and tips or the best talent build for reaching Level 70, this guide contains everything you need to know about leveling a Discipline Priest in The Burning Crusade Classic.
Leveling as a Discipline Priest Healer in TBC Classic
Discipline Priests are very similar to Holy Priests, with both specializations using virtually the same range of spells. The talent trees are also largely alike—in fact, Discipline Priests must choose Holy as the secondary tree, and vice versa.
There are, however, some substantial differences. The Discipline talent tree offers a breadth of defensive talents, which greatly enhance survivability and allow excellent performance of the specialization in Arena PvP at level 70. Plenty of general utility talents exist, finding little use in PvE content yet further pushing the PvP capacity. The Holy talent tree, on the other hand, forgoes a lot of utility and survivability, but in turn, it greatly improves the potency of healing spells and helps with mana efficiency.
Discipline Priest is a niche specialization for leveling—most people go for Shadow, since it deals much more damage and offers much better versatility for open world gameplay. While certainly less efficient at gaining experience, Discipline specialization can still be enjoyable, especially if the player is fond of the lore flavor.
Once you've leveled your Discipline Priest to 70, our in-depth guides have information on stat priority, rotation, BiS, and more.
Priest Healer Class Overview Guide
Leveling Viability for Discipline Priest Healer in TBC Classic
To be honest, Discipline Priests struggle at solo leveling. Cast times are long and suffer a lot of pushback, while defensive capabilities find limited use in a standard open-world setting. While leveling, offense is the best defense—the quicker you kill the mob, the less healing you will need. As if the previous were not enough, Discipline Priests lack any meaningful AoE attacks.
Discipline Priests are a mediocre Healers in dungeons—Holy Priest does it better, as do the other 3 healing classes. Damage output is not significant, and it usually will not make up for less efficient heals, resulting in frequent drinking breaks to restore mana. Finally, this specialization brings no more utility than Holy.
There is some hope, however, as Discipline Priest is a great specialization to support another class while leveling. If you pair up with a friend, such a duo can work quite well against quest mobs—and better yet against enemy players (if playing on a PvP server), serving a foretaste of what is to come at level 70.

Best Talent Builds for Leveling as Discipline Priest Healer in TBC Classic
This build is intended to provide an optimal leveling experience. As choices are painstakingly restricted by the scarcity of talent points, there is little room for variation, resulting in a single build that works best for all content.
Spirit Tap is vital for leveling, as it restores a lot of mana. From the Holy tree, Holy Specialization and Divine Fury are the next to be talented, as they make viable the main offensive spells of a Discipline Priest. Finally, the first Discipline talents are learned, and the remaining points are invested to reach the pinnacle of the tree.

Leveling Rotation for Discipline Priest Healer in Burning Crusade
While there is no strict rotation while leveling and the player must adapt to ever-changing circumstances, primary patterns remain the same and are handy to know if you are new to this specialization.
This rotation is intended to minimize time spent killing a single target. It is quite simple, but no less lethal.
Optionally open with
. It's a slow cast but mana efficient.
Apply
to maximize damage potential.
Cast
. This deals higher DPS but costs more mana than Smite. Do not use it if you constantly run out of mana.
Cast
暗言術:死
. Skip if your health is low or burst damage may occur.
Cast
as the main filler.
Discipline Priest is capable only of feeble AoE damage, similar to Holy Priest. Holy Nova has an enormous mana cost and will deplete the mana bar very fast.
is your only AoE damaging spell; as such, it will be cast over and over.
Best Leveling Weapons and Gear for Discipline Priest Healer in TBC Classic
When choosing a weapon while leveling, you should consider whether you are focused more on increasing your damage or healing. Some weapons will increase your healing by more, while others will increase your damage by more.
Damage-Focused Weapons
The Staff of Twin Worlds can be acquired almost as soon as you step through the Dark Portal—it is a reward from one of the very first quests. Crystalfire Staff and Diamond-Core Sledgemace drop from the very first instances. Totemic Staff is extremely good, but only available to the Horde. It will last until the Rare-quality one-handed weapons next in line.
Nethershard offers an attractive boost to spell power, but it can be tricky to procure, with the Consortium reputation requirement. Zangartooth Shortblade is a much more accessible alternative, if a bit luck-dependent, as a boss drop.
Battle Mage's Baton is conveniently handed as one of the rewards of Nagrand's Ring of Blood quest series, which requires a party of 5 players to beat subsequent bosses spawning in the arena just nearby. Experience awarded by the chain is excellent for how short it is to complete, so you may kill two birds with one stone!
Ameer's Impulse Taser is acquired from a quest chain in Netherstorm. Oronok's Ancient Scepter is virtually equal, but Shadowmoon's Cipher of Damnation series is particularly lengthy and winding, so you are better off getting another weapon if you are not doing that chain for another reason.
All weapons will be quickly replaced at level 70—various staves and daggers drop from normal mode dungeons, content that is not very challenging and can be easily accessed.

Healing-Focused Weapons
Diamond-Core Sledgemace and Blade of Trapped Knowledge are particularly good spell power pieces that also work quite well for healing. Earthcaller's Mace is awarded by the same quest as Totemic Staff, once again giving the Horde some advantage. Coilfang Hammer of Renewal drops in one of the Zangarmarsh dungeons—even if luck is not on your side, you can use reputation gained from a few runs to buy Preserver's Cudgel either way.
Mogor's Anointing Club and Azure Lightblade are easy to grab, since they are awarded by quests with few prerequisites.
Ceremonial Kris is potentially the best weapon you can get before level 70 Normal dungeons, but it is not of much importance, with plenty of stronger weapons available in these dungeons.

Best Leveling Professions for Discipline Priest Healer in TBC Classic
Tailoring does not offer much valuable gear while leveling, yet level 70 endgame items are insanely powerful and remain best in slot for quite a while.
幽紋布
drops profusely from Outland humanoids, so you can gain skill points simultaneously with leveling. Having this profession ready at 300/300 before launch will speed up the process of learning high-end gear and possibly even allow you to prepare some valuable materials before you hit 70.
Gathering professions (Skinning, Herbalism, and Mining) grant no bonus for your character's stats whatsoever, but they earn a lot of gold. Throughout TBC leveling content, you will encounter plenty of nodes that can be gathered. If you do not plan to use a crafting profession for leveling, picking any of these 3 is a great way to get a financial head start at level 70—and you can subsequently drop it to level the desired endgame profession with the gold you earned.
If you want to find out more about TBC Classic Professions, our guide covers each of them in detail.

Best Leveling Consumables for Discipline Priest Healer in TBC Classic
德萊尼智慧藥劑
is an elixir that Alchemists learn early on. It is a great consumable at level 70, so it is no less useful while leveling! A solid chunk of Intellect and Spirit helps a bit with mana efficiency.
As
過期的巫師之油
will dramatically drop in value in TBC, they should be extremely cheap while still giving a nice boost to your spell damage.
禿鷲肉丸
is an entry foodstuff whose recipe is accessible as early as in Hellfire Peninsula. It requires 300 skill points in Cooking to craft. Materials are a common drop from vultures found around huge skeletons littering the entire zone. 20 Stamina helps with survivability, while 20 Spirit adds some mana regeneration.
Our Discipline Priest Healer Consumables guide covers the best consumables in more detail.

Leveling Tips for Discipline Priest Healer in TBC Classic
Discipline Priest has a few mechanics that are not obvious and can be used to enhance the leveling process:
Depending on your mana levels, you can rush another mob or wait for a while.
grants mana while casting, but 5 seconds after your last successful cast, the amount regenerated is doubled. Manage this mechanic to squeeze as much mana as needed!
You may use the global cooldown downtime of instant spells to strafe away from the mob a little. This delays the mob catching up with you, granting an additional second or two of casting without pushback. Make sure to use strafe movement (running to the sides, which can be keybound in the keybinds menu) and never walk backwards, as it is much slower.
Spirit is generally considered a useless stat, but this is not the case for Priests. Spirit Tap scales with Spirit and is a major source of regeneration, making the stat definitely worth stacking.
Always keep your buffs up. Even if
appears unassuming, it prevents some incoming damage and is not consumed when shielded.
can now be accessed by all races, so make sure to make good use of this spell, especially on heavily contested PvP servers.

Is this suppose to be a leveling guide for 1-70 or just 60-70? Sadly, I'm not seeing much that will help someone new to the class/starting fresh.

A poor talent build chosen for this guide. Disc excels as a solo build with 40/0/11. Basically shadow priest without mana issues. Shadow becomes viable/better after 63 when they can get Meditation, too.

"Discipline Priest is a mediocre healer in dungeons" My experience is drastically different from this. If anything is mediocre, this guide is. Discipline is *designed* for healing multiple people at once, which is exactly what you'll be doing in dungeons. The guide says "The Discipline talent tree offers breadth of defensive talents, which greatly enhance survivability" which seems like it would be a point in favor of its viability in healing dungeons, yet in the very next sentence says "The Holy talent tree, on the other hand, forgoes a lot of utility and survivability, but in turn greatly improves potency of healing spells and helps with mana efficiency.". Mana efficiency is the hallmark of the discipline tree. Discipline for Priests is like Holy for Paladins. It's all about enduring--you know, like the capstone ability.
Some specifics: if this is a levelling guide, where is wand specialization? The argument given is that Spirit Tap is also available, but this isn't zero sum. You can take both. And when you're out of mana, you really want your wand to be capable. Where is Healing Focus? Why did you take Martyrdom but not Focused Will? Crits are rare in PVE, and beyond that this split between the two talents is inconsistent. It's also clear that the talent build makes the assumption that discipline priests will never do dungeons, given this, and also given the lack of talents like Improved Renew, Inspiration, and Silent Resolve (see also Healing Focus, listed above).
I question the wisdom of the self-declared "Pope of Priest Classic Discord" given how misguided this guide is. Perhaps they never succeeded with healing as Discipline, but I regularly find myself at full mana after pulls with everyone at full health but drinking while I'm jumping around waiting. I'm not even that great. I haven't played in years and my gear is random dungeon blues and greens. I'm not trying to brag, here, just sharing an anecdote that I'm out of practice and don't have the best gear and yet I'm doing really well with Discipline with many different groups.

I am leveling a Blood elf priest as discipline, so far 37 hours and level 28. I decided to spend 2 points on spirit Tab and one on Blackout for the occasional mana regen and stun. The rest points on Discipline: Full Wand Specialization, Improved Power Word: Shield. In my gear, I look for spirit and damage + healing.
I normally MB, SW:P, Shield then I use the Wand until the NPC is dead. If my shield breaks I cast on my Renew, and run until I can cast another shield. Now that I am level 28 I am adding Holy Fire and Inner Focus. I haven't had any problems questing and healing in dungeons.
I don't feel that I am staying behind if compare to leveling my warrior, or rogue.

Says that wand spec is a viable talent yet none of the leveling builds pickup wand spec? Talent choices are just bad.
