i agree with your friend.
wow is nothing rather than spending hours just to get a crappy gear.
and when u get it, you start spending hours again to get another part of the set.
social side? you mean pve?
why do u think people join raids? meeting each other or just trying to get another crapy item?
and the worst part of the game?
you spend hours and days to level up, you spend weeks to complete a set and bangggggggg
your character is nerfed...
you start doing all those broing things again without knowing if your new character will be nerfed or not..
my 2 chars nerfed. i wont make a 3 rd one. thats why i quit this boring time wasting game.

WoW PvE is about getting better gear, so you can kill bigger monsters to get better gear.
WoW PvP is more competitive (sorta). Its about killing players so you can get better gear so you can kill more players.
This isn't "Bad" design; its obviously working out for the nearly 12 million people who are playing. It does get old after a while, but hey... Nobody is forcing you to play.

Does it matter if its badly designed if your having fun?
It has a huge ammount of player interaction and even if when im whining about the easy raid content I can still have a joke with my guildies on vent whilst levelling an alt or something.
Its completely what you make it and if you have no imagination then it will suck.
This, sort of.
WoW is an amazing game. It caters to all levels of play (go ahead, argue, but you'll be wrong due to failing to encompass 12 million points of view), has TONS of stuff to do, incredible scenery, a (relative to most MMO's I've played) very stable server environment, lots of lore, lots of outside-WoW references, and the largest player base of every other game of its kind... roleplayers, end-game raiders, pvp'ers, weekend warriors (or mages, whatever), parents, grandparents (seriously)... I've played with them all on my server, and they all keep coming back for more.
Corrected: It's an AMAZING game. (caps necessary.)
If you've gotten disillusioned with it for one reason or another, that's a personal thing. If its jaded you to the point where you hate WoW, fine - move on, quit, do something else, or keep QQ'ing.... but your opinion won't change the fact that WoW is a great game in FACT. Numbers (paid subscribers) don't lie.
Your friend is right. You basically work your tail off to try to get good gear, if you're playing that way, in WoW. But thats like saying 'Pac-Man is stupid, all you do is eat dots and ghosts, there's no point' 'Tetris is stupid, all you do is put blocks together' or 'Super Mario Brothers is a waste of time, all you do is jump on stuff and break bricks with your head.'
It's a game. Unless someone designs a game which feeds the poor or helps you pay for college, there won't be a point beyond the 0's and 1's combining to make numbers and colors and shapes on your screen different and better to you. If you like gaming but you're sick of WoW, move on, no need to slam what is OBVIOUSLY... a great game.
TL;DR : WoW is a great game. Numbers do not lie. Good luck finding a video game with 'a point' to the friend of the OP.

If you make the game soley about the gear and raiding content, you're missing out on a huge part of what makes WoW a great game - the beautifully crafted world, the atmosphere, the stories behind quests, the lore, the joy of levelling a character and learning new skills and talents, the exploration etc.
If those things are not for you, WoW is not your game - no point in complaining about the taste of ale if your like wine better …

Gear is a part of it, its also the steps it takes to get gear. Organizing as a team to get that gear tends to be the appealing aspect for many players, while the gear itself is the reward for being good enough to organize successfully.
There is also the lore and story, as I'm sure many many other aspects people like other than just gear.
if it was ONLY about getting loot, or only about story, then the MMO part of MMORPG would be without a point. You can do that on any offline rpg like final fantasy or whatever. The other people playing along side you is where the core of the design is, not the loot. This goes for all MMOs

This.
WoW is an amazing game.
I have come into it late after trying it a couple of times before over the years. At first I didn't like the "cartoony" graphics but they have grown on me now. Believe it or not, the first thing I found really amazing is how bug free it is. OK there are bound to be issues here and there but you really ought to try some other games before anyone calls WoW buggy, same goes for lag too, and I was constantly amazed to be doing quests and *GASP* the quest NPC would actually be there when I got to them, and they wouldn't be stuck in a tree!
Really if you think thats WoW is poor, you really ought never to play another MMORPG, trust me.

Agreed. You want to learn to truly appreciate WoW? Play Maple Story for a few months. =)
