What if they have an alt/main with the achievement?
And how are they supposed to get the achievement for this character if group/raid leaders will only allow people WITH the achievement to join?

"we used to do these without the achieves, but now most people have them it's a must"

Well there's sort of a reason. PuG'd undying last night, was going smoothly, then we got to gluth and the hunter said "Oh I can kite this no problem", I volunteered to help and he said he had it, then when it came down to the fight he knew ^&*! and got mobbed by the zombies, and died and screwed the run for us. If there was an achievement for that, I could have checked to see if he was cappable of kiting and said "No, you haven't done it" and more attention would have been focused on kiting.
Also, people say you need the achievement, but if you're well known for being a good player on your server, people bend the rules for you.

I can relate to some point in asking for achievement, eg asking for
Heroic: Besting the Black Dragonflight
, when you're attempting
Heroic: Twilight Assist
,
Heroic: Twilight Duo
, or
Heroic: The Twilight Zone
, and you need to PuG it.
However, there are quite a lot toons around that have been dragged to 25man raids, adding absolutely no added value to the raid, without understanding the encounters, their role or class, ending up with
Heroic: The Fall of Naxxramas
...
The whole problem with these achievements is : you
do not
have to be alive or active during the kill to get it; nerfing these achievements so you have to be alive to receive them, would make asking for them a lot more sensible.

To be honest, if a raid leader can't be bothered to explain a fight which takes 30 seconds then they are lazy.
How are people supposed to get achievements for places if you require the achievement for it and can not raid with your guild, or choose not to be in a raiding guild?
As said, you can be boosted through achievements. It doesn't mean you know strategies.

My main issue with asking for achievements is it is a catch 22: They want you to have the achievements for the raid that you're trying to get into. It's like when I tried to buy my first car: I was trying to establish auto credit, but couldn't purchase a vehicle because I had no prior auto credit.
I guess your co-signer in this case would be someone vouching that you've been through that particular raid on an alt or something.
Your best bet is to get into a guild, to be honest. Beyond that, you take what you can find, and unfortunately people are focused on "link ach" as the be-all, end-all solution to idiots in PuGs (when it really is no guarantee).

Even if one understands how a fight goes (more often than not by reading bosskillers) that only gets you so far. How many people know the basic concept of driving yet don't have their license? I know it's apples and oranges, but the point is still the same. Knowing a fight and having actually done the fight are two separate things. Either way though, achievements shouldn't be used period. As others have said, you can get an achieve in greens because you got boosted and you can link fake 1s with that addon.

What about people like me, who know the fights days after they hit the PTR? I do quite an extensive research about each boss, which puts me ahead of many people, even some who have done the fight once or twice. Where is my place in the grand scheme?
You can't dismiss a PuG because they don't have the achievement. I used to not have it, and still pulled my weight at least as much as the experienced people. But then, I am a prodigy kid...

Just because you know the mechanics of the fight doesn't mean you know how to do the fight. I read up on hodir and I managed to avoid all his iceblocks the first try, but when it came to the frozen blows, even though I knew they were coming and that I had to heal them, it was still somewhat difficult to heal. I can't imagine someone who isn't skilled trying to do the fight, even if they knew the mechanics.

DBM DBM DBM! Know all boss fights!
Works on some rare cases :D Like when I did freya with 3 elders the first time, I had no idea of the fight, I just listened DBM say "STOP CASTING!" and "MOVE!". Of course I had done the normal mode several times before.
I had the same kind of problem in TBC. I had run Kara, Maggy and Gruul zillions of times, but I never got into SSC because every time someone asked "have you done it before?" and I didn't want to lie. Perhaps it was a mistake. :P
