Preparations for Arenas?

I'm levelling my Paladin for some PvP at 80.
I've been thinking I'd like to try some Arena's with a friend.
(Friend has an 80 Warlock and 80 Paladin.)

I've done a fair bit of PVP (Legionnaire on my trusty old shaman) but it was a long time ago.

Whats the plan for getting going in Arena's and is it difficult to maintain a "high" rating?
(What is classed as "high" these days? 2000?)

I was thinking of running BG's until I have a lot of PVP gear from Honor Points and start up the Arena team.

Any words of wisdom to be shared regarding Arena's?
