Depends on who you want to have considering you an expert.
If you want random noobs, and casual guildies to consider you an expert, all it takes is reading wowhead a bit. Maybe download simple add-ons like questhelper/carbonite, cartographer, gathering node addon, and a raid bossmod to tell you when you're standing in the fire.
If you want the hardcore raiders to consider you an expert, you better have the best of the best gear, hardmode achievements, and max out everything about your characters.
If you want guys like the theorycrafters to think you're an expert, you may want a degree in math first. :P You will need to be able to debate complicated spreadsheets and equations with conviction and numbers to back you up, proving you know exactly what spells/gear/ etc. are *the best of the best* and why.
I'm just one of those people who can post the link to wowhead and answer basic questions, and that's as much of an "expert" as i care to achieve.
I have such a guild full of morons that worship me sadly.
Being considered an expert in a high end raidingguild is next to imposible simply because there's only so much to know. Al people in those guilds have the max enchants and gemming. "Skil" in those guild is not a deciding factor for anything as al know wtf to do.

Practice and reading about wow on sites like this one, Checking out boss encounters BEFORE you go to the raid and just being knowledgeable about the game and willing to help others.
(This is my problem, I'm a %^&*!@ to people who are dumb.)
The best way is to to experience a variety of things, remember theses things and help others with the knowledge you have.
But if your just trying to be a good player the best thing is come prepared, I hate it when people dont have flasks, food buffs and dont know the fights. When you come to a raid and need to waste 24 other peoples time getting your act together it makes you look bad (And your guild if your in a pug.)

If you want to be considered an expert, you don't have to be good at holding all information in your head. You just have to be faster at looking it up than the person asking the question.
Use wowhead, mmo-champion, elitistjerks, wowwiki, etc.
