Curse of Elements vs. Agony

I see many affliction builds go for Improved Curse of Agony, although from what I have experienced, is it not better to place up Curse of Elements instead?
I would take a 13% increase in damage over a simple DoT any day.
Any Ideas? ... I know that if another warlock is in the group... then he could put up CoE ... but is it more dps to put up CoA vs CoE ... or the other way around?

the CoE effect is also applied by balance druids and unholy death knights. they also do it better than us. if you're in a raid with neither then you should be using your Coe, yes, but warlocks should generally view their CoE as a last resort.

Second.
CoA all the way, unless you're without a DK or Boomkin. Then break out the CoE.

Also, isn't there a general rule regarding the number of casters in the group. For example, lets say you are in a 10 man and have a bunch of DKs, Warriors, Rogues, Hunters, and Paladins. You are the only caster. For yourself, is CoA better than CoE? What if it is you and a mage? CoA or CoE?

Probably some unspoken rule. I honestly don't use it that much because either A) we have a boomkin or B) There's me and a mage and thats pretty much it caster wise.

Some melee also benefit from CoE. Think about DK's (especially frost DKs). I also think retadins benefit from CoE, but I can't say that for sure because the tooltip doesn't mention holy damage.

It counts for all spell damage so yes anyone that does spell damage rather than physical damage will benefit from the CoE effect. Also even if its just you 13% extra damage and a reduce in resistances will produce more damage than CoA does anyway.

The one from the moonkin is Earth and Moon (

) and the DK one is Ebon Plaguebringer (
http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=51161
), which is a deep unholy talent.

not really. very few bosses have any kind of innate resistance. maybe sapph but even that hasn't been proven.

ok, but there's no argument that warlocks should use CoE if no one else is applying it. the point is that both other classes that can apply the magic damage debuff do it better than we do, whether we factor damage curses or not.

partial resists that we encounter in PvE aren't only due to actual spell resistance some innate resistance is given to PvE bosses due to the level difference. all things being equal the resistance gained via level difference is:
5(targetLevel - casterLevel)
so bosses have:
5(83-80) = 15
sadly this innate resistance can't be lowered via spell penetration or use of CoE and you will always see a certain amount of partial resists in PvE.

In this case I use CoE.
I'd recomend you to go to a dummy and try your naked DPS once with CoA, and once with CoE. You'll notice that you do pack quite a big of a punch with CoE if you are completly alone and nobody else provides that kind of a buff for you. If you find yourself with multiple warlocks in the same group, and no boomkin/unholyDK, you'll just have to fight over who gets those tiny bits of extra DPS that CoA gives you.
Pro tip;
if any warlock has the talent Molten Core, the one who
doesn't
should be the one who casts CoE, since that's the lock who gets the least of a dps gimp.

Here's what I do. For trash mobs that are tougher than average, which usually appear lone, I use elements, because the extra damage from my spells will out do the damage from the first half of agony.
On bosses I use curse of doom. I've found through testing on dummies that the amount of damage done by a curse of doom is almost equal to one minute of curse of agony. So I just cast doom and forget about it.
When a boss is getting low, and it's time to switch to drain soul, cast elements no matter what. The extra 13% damage to the already impressive damage of drain soul has the spell ticking for me at about 8 or 9 thousand.
I almost never use agony, unfortunately.
The above is all assuming there isn't another source of the +13% damage debuff.

CoD is horrible for affliction. the problem is that it doesn't get any benefit fro talents like shadow mastery which is stupid but true. take impCoA, take the glyph and cast CoA or CoE. CoD isn't on the menu for affliction warlocks.
