Overhealing & Threat

I have a very simple question that has bugged me for some time (and has probably been covered before).

Does overhealing cause agro, or just waste mana?

I have heard both priests and non-priests argue both sides, so I am at a loss.
Time to ask the ever-wise community...

Only the actual amount healed causes threat. Overhealing does not cause threat.

So does that mean when the tank is a little low on HP and I heal a large amount (say from 25% up to 80-90% of his hp) I am generating a massive amount of threat?

N.B. I am planning to use OMEN for raiding but at the moment run without addons so can't check my agro.

Healing threat is not percentage based, but rather a direct multiplier (0.5x) of the actual amount healed, ignoring overheal. Therefore, if you gheal crit your tank for 8000 health, you would spike approximately 4000 threat (untalented) on a single target. While this is a considerable spike in threat and threat-per-second, most solid tanks should be able to out threat your heals in 10 man or 25 man encounters. Heroics and other 5 mans may be a different story, especially if you're pugging, but usually it's hard to out threat the tank unless he's poorly geared and the dps are retarded.
