Hey all you rogues :) I have to admit that I have no clue on how to play a rogue. My main is a warlock and my present alt in progress is a tree drood :) So I come here and would like to ask you for advice for a friend if that is ok :)
My irl friends little brother is leveling his very first character in wow and its a lvl 68 rogue. Me, my friend (68 dk), and his brother really like the new dungeonfinder and thus we level almost only by dungeons. From time to time we encounter a mage/warlock/whatever dps class and who boasts about their high dps compared to everyone else. Strangely my rogue friend always ends up waaay down the dps meter. My guess to this is because he has no aoe and might kick ass on single target mobs. When I switch from healing (i'm still learning not to overheal *smile*) on recount most of his dps are from white damage, is that normal?
My problem here is that I want to help him either get better in dps or understand how a rogue works dps wise. Is it because of the lack of aoe, gear, build, wrong rotation or plain bad luck?
His name is Ephialtes on EU server Spinebreaker

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Thanks for the really fast answer :) I'll try to get him to understand that subtly is more for solo play but it's going to be hard :p he really likes Shadowstep and his knives ^^ However, I'll force him to respec his combat spec and let him see the difference :)
How about an assassination spec pre-80 for instances?

Not true if you are leveling through dungeons and he wants to keep his daggers then mutilate is fine to run with. Consult the stikies for the talent build and he will be fine. He just needs to understand the mechanics of rogue play and what skills to use. Combat is good as well and most always say combat for leveling. I agree with this if you are quest grinding as you can attack multiple targets. If you are just running instances might as well go with something you like.

Actually if he likes Sub so much I might recommend he goes Assasination for dungeons then. He can keep his daggers and the feeling won't be as far a depart from playing Sub. IMO Sub feels the most like playing a rogue with Assassination just behind - Combat just feels like a warrior in leather. The dps on trash isn't going to to be as good as Combat (which won't be as good as AOE classes to begin with anyways) but the dps on single target bosses should pull way ahead.
In the end, it's pre 80 content so unless he's really bummed out that he's not topping charts I say play whatever way make the game fun (it is a game after all). When he reaches 80 he can decide how serious he wants to get about maxing his dps.
Thanks alot for your good advice all of you :) When I meet with him tomorrow I'll let him know all you have written and we'll test it in action ^^
