I could see some beautiful gem combos. You could go for a great utility combination of..

the 15m/5 is just plain hot. socket it right and that's 17m/5. If you drop the gems i recommend, that's 21mp/5.

Depending on your preference in enchants, you could drop a CHEAP 6mp/5 on your chest and have 27mp/5.

Or, get +6 all stats for more of a balance. I shy away from all stats, merely because i don't need str/agil/spir and merely gain benefits from the stam/int.

I'm not to worried about the breastplate from Kara now. This is the pure upgrade from it.

(my char is Revenant on Eredar, so this is coming from a bonafide, yet hodgepodge gear, paladin :P)

Ignoring the nearly useless set bonus from Justicar, this chest appears to be very similar to Tier 4 (Magtheridon). Depending on how well guilds go in Zul'Aman it's possible that this will be easier to acquire than Tier 4 (also remember that in a 10 man you'll have maximum two people rolling on this one piece as opposed to Tiered token in a 25p raid).

personally i think +heal is the most important stat for a holy pally, i completely ignore mp5 as our spells are so ridiculously cheap (and i chain pot, as all good raiders do). even if you completely ignore spell crit enhancements to your gear, you will still sit at a high level of spell crit as it's on nearly all pally gear and in our skill tree.

thus i gem everything with +18 healing gems.

Imo you can stack +healing as long as you are potting mana and dont go oom. Were that balance lies is up to you, how much pots u wanna use and if you go oom or not. One has to remember that the paladinclass, compared to for exampel shamans and priests, has very very cheap heals, even after the illumination nerf, so that mp5 isnt highly needed. Unless you don't wanna pot that much. Wich in my book is called slacking :P So i go for max +healing. I even value sta and int more than mp5. Simple cause i never go oom.

Concerning the spellcrit, for paladins spellcrit means 2 things: more healing ( more crits = more total healing done), and more mana back (from illumination) wich translates into mp5 basicly.
How much +healing 1% spellcrit is depends on how much your current +healing is.
So lets assume we do 100% flashheals (just for example) and we have 2000 +healing.

1850 hp noncrit flashheal with 2000 +healing
2775 hp crit flashheal with 2000 +healing
flashheal crit = (2775-1850)= 925 hp more healed
1 min flashheals = 40 flashheals
1% more of the flashheals crit = (40/100) * 925 hp = 370hp more healed / minute
370 hp healed spread over 40 flashheals is (370/40)= 9,25 hp more per flashheal
To get 9,25 hp more per flashheal you need the +healing of (9,25/0,43)= 21,5 +healing
When you crit a flashheal you get 108 mana back from illumination.
As i wrote above the number of critting flashheals per minute equal to 1% spellcrit is (40/100)
Then you would get (40/100)*108 = 43,2 mana back per minute wich is (43,2/12) = 3,6 mp5

So assuming you got 2000 +healing, 1% spellcrit means 21,5 +healing and 3,6 mp5.

Also, the mp5 stays the same for each 1% spellcrit you add, it's allways 3,6 mp5.
But the +healing you get from 1% spellcrit is dependant on how much total +healing you currently got. If you got more than 2000 +healing, you gain more than 21,5 +healing, if you got less, you gain less.

To put our stats in perspective, our shamans stack alot of MP5, and compared to our paladins have not that much +healing. But still they can own us up on the healingmeter. The preconditions are different, shamans healingspells are more powerfull, but at the same time more manaexpensive, hence they need more mp5 and less +healing. The paladins healingspells are not that powerful, but very cheap manawise. Hence we need more +healing and less mp5. The principle is to make your character stronger in the area it's weak in, to maximize it's performance.

ps, this is not the common opinion among nihilum paladins, as i know others value mp5 more than me. nevertheless, i thought this post might be of some guidance.

How you socket this item is a matter of personal preference and playstyle, but the simple fact is : a base of 15mp5 is huge.

Over the course a ten minute fight this item alone, unsocketed and unenchanted, will give you back 1800 mana guaranteed. The sockets mean you can customise it to suit you.

There's just so much wrong here ...

1) Paladins lost their huge mana efficiency advantage relative to priests when 2.1 hit, when illumination was nerfed to 60%. Right now, flash of light is still more mana efficient than a priests flash heal but not quite as efficient as a priests greater heal in terms of hpm. Flash of light is also inferior to the mana efficiency of a lifebloom allowed to tick to fruition.

2) Lets compare your closest opportunity cost to using a +18 heal gem: royal nightseye at 9 heal, and 2mp5. Is +9 healing really worth more than 2mp5? In any fight longer than 2 minutes, the answer is clearly no The math has been done millions of times and the answer is clearly no, especially now given that downranked spells got nerfed in the recent patch. That means +heal is an even worst replacement for mp5, because the mana efficiency gained from downranking is now less.

3) HPS calculations is not equivalent to DPS calculations. When you crit as a dps class, the boss takes 100% of the extra crit damage.

When you crit as a healing class, you're effective healing gain from spell crit is actually much less. The reason for this is because you can only heal for as much as the difference between the tanks current health and the tanks max health.

In effect your gain in effective healing is going to be much less than your idealized calculations, especially in a raid setting where other healers are also spamming heals on the main tank.

Thus +heal in effect translates into much less effective healing than you describe, partially negating its value.

4) Not only are your assumptions highly theoretical, so is your assumed playstyle. No paladin worth his salt is using 100% flash of light in every raid. No matter how much +heal you give your flash of light spells (which have a coefficient under %50 for +heal anyways, making sole +heal itemization even more ludicrous), even level 7 holy light will give you more hps, and there is a lot of burst damage in higher-end raiding that requires holy light usage.

And more holy light usage means you need more mana available to you at any one time.

Which brings me to my main point:

5) Tanks does not consistently take 3000 damage every 1.5 seconds in progression encounters where your theoretical assumptions are true. They take large amounts of burst damage, which means paladins need to have holy light ready at any time, and they need to maximize their resources (mana) to cast that spell.

Wipes aren't caused because your flash of lights hit for 1600 instead of 1800. They aren't caused because your holy lights hit for 6000 instead of 6500. They are caused by the fact that you are running out of mana healing burst damage. Mp5 is the best stat to deal with this.

Mp5+ pot usage is far better than pot usage +heal. If you are finding yourself with plenty of mana without optimizing with mp5, then your hps is clearly lower than it could be. You could be spamming downranked holy lights instead even more of the time, with mp5 for more steady hps, and still have mana leftover to cast high rank holy lights for burst damage.

Compared to T4. If you gem them exactly the same (2x 9heal 2/5 and 8 crit) then it comes out like this.

-1 sta, -4 int, -17crit, -4 healing, +11 m/5, +97 armor

A fine breastplate like this should come with a set of fine gems to it.
My personal choice would be...
Red and Yellow socket with https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=30593 (witch drops from heroic Ramparts)
And blue socket with
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=30603 (witch drops from heroic Slave Pens)
These sockets are much supperior to any other in my eyes....
you will get approx
33healing 8 spell crit and 4mp5(with the gem bonus).
If you really want em fine gems...take some time work for the heroics.

Just got this yesterday for my pally. I had been hoping to get the one from Illhoof in Kara but this one surpasses it by far. Easily the best PvE plate healing chest outside of SSC, BT, The Eye. Just fill up the slots with Teardrop Living Rubies and you're gtg.
