Wyou have the Threshwakonator following you, and you get close to the captain, the robot will spontaneously turn aggressive and attack you. He is level 20 Elite, and hits pretty hard, so be ready. If you need to escape or heal, run into the water, he won't follow very far. Of course, if you do that, he'll go into evade/fast heal mode, so you can't just attack him from a distance without being hit.

On the other hand, he will follow you quite a ways if you don't head towards the captain. I got him all the way to Auberdine before he got bored and despawned (I don't know whether it's a timer or a distance-from-start meter that controls this.)

Solo'd as a 21 firemage. I had him evade and had to start the fight over, so I opened with pyroblast and just used blink/frost nova to keep him away from me. Should be even easier as a frost mage, just kite him around.

I was kind of surprise to see it attack me, he cought me off guard but i managed to kill him, 21 druid in bear form.

solo lv 20 warlock.

pull him to the water to stall him. cant hit him at this moment, he will just evade. walk around him and exit the water at a safe point. start with a shadowbolt, then agony, corruption and immolate him. then command your voidwalker to attack him. retreat as your vw gains aggro. start using your wand on the robot. before the vw dies or if it is unable to hold aggro and the robot comes after you, refresh the dots on him and sacrifice the vw and summon another while the shield absorbs dmg from the robot. you should have 100hp left when you are done summoning. one hit away from death, so use a healthstone. start kiting the robot at this moment. you should now have 90hp and the robot has less. your vw will successfully hold aggro on it and there you have it. soloed a powerful elite.

You are left with Gyromast's Key after completing this quest. As far as I can tell, there's no reason to hang on to it. The Threshwackonator won't accept it again.

Got surprised when he turned on me, but soloed fine as a 17 dranni hunter. If I'd remembered to heal my pet at the start, he wouldn't have even died to kill the elite.

I was disappointed to find that this was the last quest Gyromast gives. It would have been nice if this was a more complete chain. After finishing this, he won't even talk to you.

Found this much easier to do as a hunter than a druid (both solo-sort of).

As a druid, tried rooting him butthat didn't work so went bear form did a lot of damage, took a potion and then finished him off with moonfire.

As a hunter, pet and I took him out without a problem.

And those Raging Tide Crawlers are tougher than you think.

To complete this quest you MUST kill the Threshwackonator 4100.

Yes it is a pain in the rear, but that is what you have to do to kill it.

If you have trouble talking to the captian, check to see if the robot thingy is spawned. My partner and I found out that while the robot is spawned the captian will not talk to you AT ALL. It's a reall pain but that's the only way to talk to him.

The quest SORT of tells you this, if you know how to read them. The way it presents the first mate in your quest list implies that you have to kill it.

Of course, I didn't notice this, and let him kill me as I valiantly tried to figure out HOW to use the key.

It makes sense, sort of, if you're close by when he triggers.

I think the quest IS bugged. I think he's supposed to be green when you see him, you use the key, and then when you get within range of the captain, he triggers to red, the Captain says his text about 'you've gotten him angry', and you have to kill him.

Oh, and I haven't seen any loot off him either. :)

Even if you perform this quest correctly, you will have the key in your inventory. Just trash it since it useless post quest.

Just Run South of the Captain along the beach. You can't miss the Elite Robot he's very tall&large.; Only reason he may be missing is you are waiting for respawn.
Note on water> Robot won't chase you into the water, you can heal but you can't attack and he will heal.

The reason the key stays in your inventory after you kill the robot is simple: if you were sharing the quest, one of you used the key to start the robot so the other person never used the key - that person has it in their inventory!

Just throw it away after killing the robo and completing the quest!

ok... gettin the key parts was really easy. all you do is, find some Raging Reef Crabs and kill them and they'll drop one of the parts for you. then go a lil wayz to land and kill some Giant Forestriders and they'll drop one of the key parts. then go towards the cliffspring river, and west of where the cliffspring empties into the ocean, there'll be a sea turtle carcass inhabited by some Greymist Murlocs. the carcass will have a lil hut built on top of it. go kill some of the murlocs there and they'll drop the last key part for you. good luck :).

was looking for fine crabe meat (other quest) wayyyyy tooo far north and a guy said...oi, help me.

i'm a lvl 21 druid and he was a lvl 21 warriior.

for sure i said.

jumped in water for first quest (keys) killed the first murloc i found near the boat (behind the captain) got the key.

Found a lvl 21 crab, killed it, got a key (getting too easy)

saw a giant bird...for a NE, this bird is a giant. Killed it, got a key.

3 kills, 3 keys.

then a random lvl 25 pally came by, partied up. Warrior activates robot (my key being useless now) walked the robot over, as soon as it got close i healed while pally did work on the robot.

quest done.

silver only good thing.

Gelkak Gyromast's First Mate, the Threshwackonator 4100, is passive until he is within about 10 feet of the Captain. He then turns 'mean' and must be killed in order to complete the quest. The Captain even yells out something about "All Hands for Themselves" (or something like that) at this point.

As for getting the key parts for the first part of this quest chain, the Raging Reef Crawlers running around the Captain have one key part, the Murlocs just off-shore from the Captain at the ship wreck have another part of the key and the Giant Forreststriders just inland from the Captain have the third part of the key.

I kill the robot on my own.......I am level 23 druid.....just use entangled roots and moonfire........keep repeating it and keep your distance.......and you should be able to defeat him even though he is an elite robot......

Once he becomes hostile, run away until he breaks off. Then get back close to him, drop a freezing trap, wait 30 seconds (mark him), arcane shot, concussive shot, shoot, shoot, arcane shot.. your trap will get him, now run max range, drop trap (your cooldown will be ready), arcane shot, concussive shot, freeze trap, back up, sick your pet on him, arcane shot... if you gets to you, make sure you have Monkey up (dodge!). Pretty easy.

Rogues, if you want to get a backstab in simply use your stealth before you get to the captain. He will go hostile but not see you. You can then sneak around him and backstab then Evasion to make this fight much easier.

I've done the quest, but Gyromast's key still in my inventory after ending of this quest.
Why? Is there any another quest where you can use it? Or I can just put it away?

Tried this on at lvl 20 as a druid. Got killed every time. Tried wrath mostly combined with entangle, but he evaded 50% of my spells. Found out later that I need to be pretty close for spells to work. Course then I get womped. lol. Should have done what one person said. Use entangle and moonfire. And repeat. Slow, but it'll give you time to regenerate mana and health.

did it with lvl 20 hunter. just use ur concussive shot, freezing tap, and aspects wisely. trick is, dont let him touch u. he gets close, concussive, cheetah, run, hawk, arcane shoot, shoot, cuncussive, cheetah etc...

ok you are supposed to kill the robot it is supposed to go aggressive and as for the not getting credit after killing it they fixed it now because I just finished the quest

I recomend that you be atleast level 21 or higher before soloing this if you are like 19 then you should get one or more people to help

PS DO NOT GO IN WATER IF YOU ARE FIGHTING IT, IT WILL HEAL IF YOU DO

I tried this one several times with my lvl 20/21 druid. I took all the advice above, but...
The robot evades EVERYTHING i fired. I used entangling roots, it evaded, fairy fire, it evaded, starfire, it evaded, moonfire, it evaded, wrath, it evaded. then roots again, which worked, but everything i threw at him while entangled, it evaded!
On my own i had NO chance of killing it.
Finally i brought a lvl 46 friend )the robot even evaded his spells!)
Maybe the best way to kill it is to use Rogue-like stategies. In the end it got killed by my friend who used cat-form to kill it, and that seemed to work. Notice that my friend was a lvl 46! I agree with the commentator above who said its defenitely NOT a lvl 20! its waaaaayyyy harder than that!

oh, and after killing it, you'll still have the key in your iventory. Just detroy it, for you won't need it anymore (unless you want to have a go at the Trashwackonator another time)

Solo this at 22 but i'm sure can be done earlier. After the robot become hostile, run into the water and wait for while. It will run and stand infront of the captain. Move to the side and get within frostbolt distance (it won't attack you until u start attacking). Now manashield, frostbolt, fireball, fire blast, frost nova, run to keep distance, frostbolt, fireball, fire blast, blink to keep distance, frostbolt, & fire blast. He was dead by this time for me, but if he isn't, your frost nova should be up by now, so just repeat.

Not much of a reward. He kicked my butt the first time around. He hits hard, and seems to heal. However if you run away he hangs out and stays red and you can come back and get him without being next to him. As a 23 Shammy I got 1150 XP and some elixir of water breathing. I got more XP for getting the keys in the first part which was very easy. lol.

What got him for me was dropping searing totems and kiting him back and forth in front of them using frostshocks. It still was far from easy because he hits so hard if he gets close.

Solod him 1st try with a lvl 22 frost mage, he only hit me once and that was when he turned hostile. I didnt even blow cold snap jsut frost nova, frostbolt,fire ball,frostbolt he ot frost bite, arcane missiles, he ran at me blinked away frost bolted and he was dead.

As of the recent patch the robot is no longer elite.. And this quest is as easy as if not more easy then mosts quests for the level group.

As a level 20 druid I went up and talked to the robot (found south of quest giver on coast) When you talk to him it gave me option to start him with the key. Upon doing so he gives a message stating he's ready to follow. I ran back north up the coast line to the captain and upon reaching the captain the robot got pissed off and engaged me. Killing him took only a few seconds.... Quest done talk to the captain again and youre done.

As a druid, go into stealth cat mode before the guy turns red and head into the water. He will enter water for just a little way and then go back to shore. Work your way around him to his back and then attack with your cat. He will die before the cat

I'm sure when I've done this quest in the past the first mate was an elite but I've just solo'ed it with a lvl 18 Hunter and I was fine.
No longer an elite the first mate is very easy to kill and I don't think anyone would need a group for this.
Got 1500 xp for it and some silver so... kinda worth it.

After the first several times trying to solo this 3 years ago, I gave up on it and never went back. Now that the First Mate is no longer an elite, it's easy and probably worth the XP.

I agree the underwater breathing reward is not much use to a Warlock as well as a Druid but everyone else can use it.

Of course the funny thing is that I was doing this for Darnassus rep for my human Warlock's cat mount and it gives you Ironforge rep. Oh well. Fast and easy.

When i approached the robot , it was already red and couldn.t communicate with him , he attacked right away.

So i (it isn't elite anymore just lvl20) destroyed him and the queest was complete , cash the XP and the breathing elixer (didn't need them as druid )

Did as a 23 level hunter was easy. Just kept mending pet (bear) until whacko was down to almost nothing and used a mana potion and continued mending and whacko was dead in about a minute from the bear attacking.

is that the first mate is not far to the south of the start npc.
start npc: 57,14
first mate: 56,18
and that this is a surprisingly hard hitting elite that will turn red and have to be killed in order for you to complete quest.

If you want more info: You have to appoach the first mate while he is friendly, turn the key and lead him towards the start npc. He'll follow you happily at first and in my case we got all the way back. He turned red just as I was wondered how long I'd have to wait. I'm not sure that there is anyway to distance yourself from him before he turns red, afterall he is set to follow you and he isn't at all slow. I was doing this as a lvl 26 druid, just going back to clear out old quests from my quest log. So I rooted him and ran off to heal and keep fighting. Judging by those first two crits he got in on me, I'd say some people will have a hard time on this quest.

Oh, and if you don't have coordinates: if you can look at the northend of the zone on your map and see the ruins of Mathrystra you can find these two. When I was standing beside the firstmate I was covering up the a and the t of Mathystra on my big map.

Did is the second time with a lvl 26 Preistess, i.e. a squishy.

you can run into the water and regroup to fight him, don't die, it is a long walk back.

He will recharge health when you go in the water and spells will not work against him while you are in the water.

You don't get much in the way of points for this job. I thought there would be aleast something in the mob. Nothing.

Lvl 21 NE Warrior solo'd but took two tries. The trick was drinking a healing potion and knocking his armor down.

i just did this as a lvl 19 druid....
i cant say it was easy cuze it wasnt.....
the thing is....you cant melee him...so use entangeling roots to keep him far away from you....and then cast moonfire....
repeat untill he dies....
it took me 4 min to kill him....i was left with no mana at the end.....

Level 21 hunter, I just climbed up on the rock with the captain and when the mate attacked my cat took the first blow and we finished him off rather quickly. Neither one of us died. Guess I just had the right angle.

It appears you have to kill the First Mate by the way. And he didn't drop anything in either time we did it. Granted it's still beta, but..... it would have been nice if he did.

I saw this robot in a passive mode once. I used the key on it and it followed me. You have to bring it back to the pirate. The thing is the robot will turn aggressive after a couple of sec (around 20). I didnt finish the quest but im still on it waiting to see if it will go passive again

Level 18+ druid can solo this, albeit really slow, but safely. Just use Entangling Roots on it, move back (a bit out of root cast range) and wait for it to run towards you. Spam root on it before it reaches you. Throw a Moonfire and Faeriefire on it too. Rinse and repeat (while backing up all the way to where the gnome is).

If it resists, throw up Nature's Grasp, Rejuv, and try to hit it with a another E.Root spell. When it's almost dead, shift into Bear for added defense and then melee it to death.

There really doesn't seem to be a point to the key.
I still have it on my 60 in the bank, completely forgot I did, and I have never had any reason to use it after this quest ended.
Might as well delete it.

Level 17 Priest.
Did this solo but had to use healing potion and rough stone statue.

Lead him to the quest giver whereupon the robot will turn on you. Be ready, there is no warning and he hits hard. Smite, Mind blast, DoTs then wand. Don't go below half health otherwise you may not have enough time to heal.

I couldn't do this quest with a level 19 Resto Druid without help. I couldn't self heal fast enough but then at the time I think the robot was an elite. It isn't now.

when i did this quest it felt like the 4100 attacking me was just a bug in the game. i even asked on the general channel and they said it was a bug and i had to kill 'em. the threshwackonator didn't even say anything when it started attacking. i was just trying to (futily) click on the gnome npc to complete the quest and then i was all.. "wtf is hitting me?"

and now on this board it seems like this is not a bug but it's supposed to be like that (?)

i'm going to report this as a bug anyway because even if it isn't a bug, then that means it's just bad game design.

Tried this as a lvl 23 druid and for me it wasn't as easy. I used entangling root, faerie fire, moon fire, star fire, etc...tried going in the water to get away from the wackonator, etc etc and still got nailed by it 3 times. I give up doing this as a solo.

I was able to finish this quest today, The first mate spawned passive an I lead him back to the captain. athough it did get quite ugly when he was back at the captain when he attacked and killed my pet. Ohhwell the quest in complete and with the water breathing potion I can farm some.
Odd thing is I still have the key?

You can solo this as a hunter using the following strategy:

1. Approach the mob and get within firing range.

2. Place an immolation trap right in front of you.

3. Remember to have 'Aspect of the Hawk' on you.

4. Mark the mob with hunter's mark.

5. Order your pet in to attack, but JUST before your pet get's the mob attention, fire a concussive shot. This will pseudo-confuse the mob for a second, as it will start heading towards you, but then your pet will use growl to get its attention. With any luck (and if you have upgraded your skills), it might even stun it for a few seconds.

6. After your concussive shot, fire a serpent Sting and then just continue on auto-shot.

7. When your pet is about to die (because it will die), fire another Serpent Sting.

8. When the mob appraches you, hit him with a Raptor Strike. At this point, the mob will trigger the trap and get hurt for some serious damage. The key to the fight really is the proper use of the trap, it gives you the edge.

9. Simply finish him up with consecutive Raptor Strikes.

If you catch the Threshwackonator 4100 in passive state, he will follow you around for quite a while. Thought it might be fun to have him as a pet, so I tried taking him with me to Auberdine. He followed almost all the way, but just before Auberdine, he vamoosed. Oh, well. He would have been great to show off in Auberdine.

It can't Swim....when you get close to the Rock where you got the quest Go out into the water... come ashore on other side of rock robot will come towards you and then go Crazy...this will give you distance to do battle... well did for me Lvl 20 Priest,,,lol ..dead rusty pile.. ; )

A level 20 paladin with standard "of the bear" gears on without too much trouble. I just burned off all my mana fast with judgment and healing doing my best to land some hits on him in between. When I was about dead with no mana I used lay on hands and hoped for the best. A mana potion would have made this a lot easier.

Went by this quest recently. Discovered that Blizzard had removed the Elite tag on the first mate. Should make it an easy way to get the water breathing potion if you are upper range for Darkshore.

Dunno if this still a bug (or just a very cludgy fix to the bug mentioned below) but here's my experience as of today.

The Threshwackowhosit now spawns agro, and is never passive. I watched for a few spawns, and watched it respawn after someone else killed it. The key itself seems useless, since the machine is never in a passive state.

I killed the machine at it's spawn point, and Gelkak completed the quest with no problem.

AFTER~ I completed the quest, Gyromast said: "YARRR! Swabie, what have ye done? He's gone mad! Baton down the hatches! Hoist the mast! ARRRR! Every man for hi'self!"

Then I tossed the useless key, hehe.

The first mate will not follow you into the water. If you're starting to be afraid of death, run in. (He will get his ankles in, but too far and he'll leave you alone.)

This does not mean you can kite him or attack him from the water. Once he cannot attack you, he goes into Evade and fast heal mode. The water is only a way to escape death.

Just finished this as lvl 18 NE hunter with lvl 18 moonstalker pet, I looked on this briefly and stopped reading after I saw "you have to kill the first mate" and I went on my way to fight him, got semi close to the npc and cast mend pet then started the fight, he immediately smacked me for 160 damage! then did between 70 and 140 to my pet.. as soon as he growled I used hunters mark and serpent sting on him and I ran back behind the log thats by the npc, I wasnt gonna leave without a fight, but pet got demolished very fast and I was half dead from that initial strike. I managed some damage before the pet died and he then comes after me and we played tag around the log (he only hopped over the log once and me jumping over the tips of the log to keep him going back and forth on the ends), me belting him with arcane and autoshot until he died, around 7 arcane shots for 45 average damage and a lot of serpent sting damage, but it didnt hit me again after the first surprise attack haha :D Quite the long and exciting fight even though its kinda cheating :p

Its clearly not a bug since the npc says "Yarr swabie, what have ye done? Hes gone mad" when you are attacked by it.

Does it really matter which way u complete the quest? Do u get different rewards or more xp for returning him safely to Gyromast or is it the same if u would just kill him?

is this questbugged or something? i get the machine back to the gnome, and it goes nuts, but the gnome doesn't say anything. after i kill it, the body is laying there right by the gnome, and he still has a white ? and asks where his first mate is......

Soloed as a druid at level 19 without taking any damage. Just keep him rooted with the moonfire dot on and stay just inside your spell reach distance.

It's seem to be a little bugged at the moment.
It's passive once at the spawn, then turn aggressive.
You can use the key when is passive. While it follows you it turns aggressive again. I finished the quest killing it.

After turning the key, he starts to passively follow you north. About halfway there he becomes aggressive and attacks you, you have to kill him.

Duo'd this successfully as an 18 druid with a 16 hunter. Druid kept him rooted and dotted while the hunter provided ranged dps.

The first mate (a robot) will be found about 30 seconds run South from Gelkak. Lvl 20 Elite. He killed me (lvl 21 Night Elf Hunter - a noob, I admit) twice when soloing, but with another lvl 21 we had no problems.

He now stays passive until meeting up with Gelkak Gyromast, at which point Gelkak states "...every man for himself..." and he must be killed.

Only one of us was able to activate him (we both had keys), and we both got awarded the quest.

I have to say if you don't have a way to root and do ranged damage, you better bring a couple of friends. My 18 warrior didn't stand a chance, hitting me for 80 at a pop, he's about a 30 elite i'd say.

I want to thank all the Druids in here who put there strategy up. I'm a lvl 20 druid, and the robot just kept on killing me...
But then I started to cast e. root on him and following by a moonfire (to save mana). After a couple of minutes i went down!

And, I couldn't loot him, and the key was gone from my inventory, but I could still complete the quest! :D

Lvl 18 night elf druid. When he attacked me, I ran into the ocean, healed up, then came around to the rock where he was still hanging with the npc, attacked him first, :roots, then wrath and moonfire until he is down. Use roots again if necessary.

I soloed this just now as a lvl 18 warlock, despite what i thought, you can fear him (most machines are immune from what i've seen). Keep your dots up, bring a healing pot n spam fear anytime it comes running back. Your voidwalker's sacrifice spell is very handy if things go south or fear gets resisted. Brought it down after abt 3 full rounds of all my dots.

I don't mean to be a killjoy but if you are under level 20 or a really-skilled class that can handle a 20 Elite, don't bother with this part of the quest chain. It's frustrating and the reward, such as it is, is miserly at best. While I realize that from the point of view of BofA, everything is miserly, this is inconsistent even in Classic, as it was the first time around.

For those of you looking to challenge your character's abilities and your skills, have at it and best of luck. For those of us who are thrilled with this wonderful walk down memory lane called Classic, skip this muddy pothole filled with worms and whatever the dog left behind.

Solo'd with level 18 druid. Entangling roots lv1. 8 minute fight. Not the best choice I've made in my life.

This elite suddenly turned hostile near the captain NPC and critted my mage for 80% of his health on the first attack.
Just don't bother with the quest until you are 25+

Don't bother soloing this quest under lv20. Killed my druid in 3 seconds.

Just wait till I get my cat form you pile of metal trash.

Was able to solo him with lvl 22 priest.
Mindblast + SW:P + Psychic Scream, dropped him at 60% health.
Then was able to kite him till the CD for psychic Scream was ready again & so on.
PW:S was able to tank 1 hit from him, so be careful.

Solo'd as a lvl18 Mage. Kited him with rank 1 Frostbolt with some Frost Novas and wanding mixed in. Having the Frostbite talent is also very helpful in rooting him a couple extra times for free.

My tactic for frost mage:

- mana shield at beginning and then nova
- get distance and then frost bolt as long as you have distance, when near cast fire blast and teleport
- frost bolt again until near, fire blast, nova should be up again
- get distance and cast evoc to get full mana
- frost bolt, fire blast, teleport. repeat
- depending on your gear, level and crit luck he should be down by now.
