You don't have to kill the Larva before it's finished with the metamorph, they will still be able to drop their Silkwing Cocoon

Just kill larvae, the cocoons have a small chance of dropping irrespective of whether they spawn a Silkwing, which they will if you don't finish them off fast enough when their health is low

If you fear them when they start to metamorph, they won't spawn the butterfly.

I've killed 27 larva, with 1 quest drop.

No rewards, no quest chain, no rep? Screw this, and screw the companion silkwing quest as well. *Maybe* at 70 for gold, but not now.

takes a while to kill them, but do it with the other quest "The Softest Wings"

When I first got this quest and the "The Softest Wings" quest I tried for over an hour with ony one drop.

I found when I left the area for a few days and came back I was getting a drop for both quests almost every second kill.

I found I had a better drop rate on the cocoons after i completed The Softest Wings quest.

I found the silkcocoons at 65% at the silkwing laves in lvl 66 and only 33% on those in lvl 65, maybe is it just a coincidense..

One more note, the Silkwings only spawned 4 times og of 20.. witch means they have 1/5 chance..

My best lucked seemed to be with letting the Larva metamorph and split open. Not only did the drop rate for the cocoons seem higher for me then, but the Silkwings that emerge in this event drop the Iridescent Wings for https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/quest=10618, allowing you to complete both quests with more efficiency .

Save yourself the trouble and don't do this quest. No rewards, horrible drop rate...makes you really hate wow. Killed 14 in a row...only 2 drops.

while the droprate might be horrible, the gray drops are really nice. all the dung that has no use for anyone, I havent even completed the quest, had to empty my bags and sold their carapaces etc to vendor... about 20 gold worth that dung. :D

Quickest way I found to do both this q and The Softest Wings is to just let the larvae hatch and kill the silkwings that spawn, since these only seem to have about 3k hp and you can get the Iridescent Wings from them

This quest has a horrible drop rate.Took me about 25 mins finishing this quest and ''softest wings'', wich is a good quest to do at the same time.

As a druid, I saved up 5 combo points, got the mob to 25%, then hit em with maim. Wait for some energy then try to kill them extremely quick before they have a chance to say the message. Took me 30 minutes to get 2/8, doing this tactic I got 6 in a row in about 3 minutes.

I found that if I was able to kill the larva within ten seconds it would drop the cocoon. And that was pretty difficult even as a mage. I suggest you get someone to help if you want to get it done quick.

Something neat I discovered. You still get XP if the cocoon turns into a moth (about 800 with rested) as well as you get some XP after killing the moth itself (around 400 rested). Killing the cocoon that didn't spawn a moth gave me 1014 xp. So therefore, you get about 200 extra XP for killing both the moth and the cocoon. Pretty good considering how easy the spawned moth dies.

The faster u kill them the more chance the drop the cocoon. Also: the more u pull the better, it goes a lot faster with AoE. By the way, whoever made this damn quest is going to burn in the fiery pits of HELL!

its a good idea to take the other q "the softest wings" when you are doing this quest, because the silkwings that the mobs turns into, got a well drop rate for the "indescent wing" wich you need in the quest

Easy way for Shamans with Fire Elemental:

Hit 4 or 5 of the Larvae with Melee or Lightning then let the fiery one do the Rest and heal him.
It took me two tries and then I had the cocoons.
Remember that you can only get loot if you did damage to the victim before.
n the 20 minutes CD-time I did the Quest for Raptor ribs etc.

Oh and while you're at it do the "Wings-Quest" at the same time.

There are tons of the larvae south of Mok'Nathal Village. I've been killing larvae for an hour now and not one has dropped...this isn't the beginning of a chain, so my advice is don't do it.

I'm not entirely sure of the mechanics of this, but I got a much better drop rate from the dead larva after the silkwing hatches from it. Get it down to about 30% then stop dps. Put a slow dot or something on it and it will soon say "Silkwing Larva begins to metamorph..." It will split open and a Silkwing will pop out. The larva corpse will be lootable too.

This one was a grinder and a snoozer for me. Kill da bugs (the softest wings) and da slugs (silkwing cocoons) just south of town. And kill a few Vekh'nir (the stones of Vekh'nir) for a change of pace.

With my hunter I got this quest done in about 15-20 mins. With beastmaster talents I slammed the pet stun when Larva was at 30% or something. If pet stun was in cooldown I used beastial wrath, trinked, racial and rabid fire at 50%. Every third larva dropped one of those cocoons.

One of the worst drop rates that exists in this game , however just dot it on 30% and do two quests in one. Cordinates are confirmed.

I'm not sure if they've fixed drop rates here or what, but I'm getting about 90% drop rate on wings from the hatched silkwings.

As for Cocoons, it's not great but it's not that bad either. Unhatched cocoons don't drop 100% of the time. My general advice would be to stop DPSing the cocoon when it starts to "morph" -- might just be a coincidence but this seems to yield the best cocoon drop for me.

I've figured out the trick to getting cocoons. 75% droprate for me!

DPS the larva normally, not too quickly, until it gets low. (You don't want to go too fast or it's less likely to metamorph.) Some of them don't metamorph at all.

When it metamorphs, nuke it and kill it *quick* before it splits. It'll drop a cocoon almost every time. :)

Quest text lies, you can still obtain Silkwing Coccoons off of the worm bodies when they complete their metamorphosis, so there's no need to plan around it. The Silkwing they spawn on death has low health and can also drop Iridescent Wing needed for their related quest, The Softest Wings (so long as you are on the quest).

100% Drop Rate way.

Start to kill the Silkwing Larva.
When they get low hp, slow down dps.
Check chat and wait for it to say 'Silkwing Larva begins to metamorphose'.
Finish killing it.

100% drop rate for me doing it that way.
And yes, just do it that way when doing the other quest, The Softest Wings. As sometimes they spawn a Silkwing.

Taerek at Mok'Nathal Village wants you to collect 8 Silkwing Cocoons from Silkwing Larva.

Kill the Larva quickly or they will turn into Silkwings, ruining their cocoons.

It is difficult to harvest the cocoons from the larva once they begin the process of metamorphosis.
