Okay, this quest sucks (at least as a 46 mage). It's very soloable, but it takes lots of regen time. When you get to the point on the Wowhead map, you'll realize it's not there. This hung me up for like ten minutes. It's in a tunnel below. You have to go towards the spiral-looking-thing on your map. Take the tunnel to the left (I don't know if there was one on the right, it looked like there could have been but I guessed left and ended up being correct). Just follow it until you have a chance to go to the coords (56, 71 I believe) that the map shows. Good Luck.

Done with 46 Mage and 44 Warlock. It was pretty easy, but the monsters respawn quite fast. It required a lot of regeneration ;)

I got this quest around 46 and I just abandoned it at 53 because it was taking space in my quest log and I knew that i would never finish it. If you have about 30 min of your life to waste do this quest.

If the toughness of the quest doesn't tick you off, then the amount of pats will. The sheer amount of pats that roam back and forth is OUTSTANDING. There's about 1-2 for every single hallway, making solo battles almost impossible, as you're bound to get an add.

In response to Unicorns post. There is nothing impossible about this quest, not even close. The only mobs that are an issue are the swarmers, just like theyve always been to some classes. As a mage this was a cake walk, more time than effort. The sillithid have moderate armour and health but otherwise have no real tricks. Just be careful and patient for patrols and take each mob as they come. If you follow the plan shown and dont get bogged down in multiple mobs, you should be in and out (without hearthing or porting) in 10-15mins solo. There are two entrances but they are different areas entirely. Go to the big one at the loc posted above.

Easy soloable as a feral druid. Stealth in and out. Just remember to keep your Thorns up if you get in a fight to handle those small buggers. They die after hitting you once.

quest location 55,71 solo easy with level 47 hunter just use feigh death and intimidation. might want to set hearthstone to gadgetzan if possible so you dont have to fight your way back out as they will all be respawned by the time your done also quest is quite some distance away. for some reason i found it alot harder to get out.

This is by far one of the most annoying quests I have ever done. The issue is that the mobs are about 3-4 levels than when the quest turns yellow. I have done oarnge quests and not had this much trouble. For that matter I have done red quests and not had this much trouble. This quest is very annoying, but seeing there is a lack of quests (alliance side) to get you to 50 from 40 you pretty much just suck it up and do what is there.

Soloed this (not easily) as a 46 disc/holy priest. Those swarmers are awful -- I don't think I've EVER used Holy Nova this much. The respawns got me on the way out though, so I just rezzed at the graveyard and went to turn it in.

I'm a level 45 shadow priest, used the Nifty Stopwatch to run in all the way to the surveying equipment before I died, then I came back res'd feared all the bugs at the surveying equipment, got the equipment, let the bugs kill me and then I spirit res'd and turned the quest in.

Great quest for leveling, make sure you take supplies (food/drink/bandages/potions) etc. You will encounter Swarmers (which you should've seen at the Noxious Liar already) so make sure you have some AOE tools on you.

Monster levels range from 47-50, and you can face quite a few adds if you're not careful. Respawn rate is very high.

Soloed as a level 49 hunter . . . Not too bad getting into the tunnels, mobs were abundant but nothing too arduous . . . in the final room, however, I encountered all the patrols that I had managed to avoid . . . frequent applications of feign death and freezing traps was needed, and while I survived, my pet was not so lucky. Down time needed before I re-tackled the last room, and from then on it was a breeze.

Getting out was not so easy, but that was simply because I had decided that I couldn't be bothered to fight. Again, lots of feigned deaths and freezing traps saw me out, although I took a LOT of damage. Health pots. FTW.

Use Liri's instructions!

Go to the Gaping Chasm (56, 61), find the entrance spiraling down at (55, 70). Take the 2nd tunnel you see when going down the spiral, the one going north. Inside the tunnel at the first fork go right. Then go through the circular room.

After the circular room at the first fork go right. You will enter a large room. The Scrimshank's Surveying Gear (55, 71) is at the western side of the room.

A lot of people would think that actually FINDING the guy would be the worst part of this quest. . . Well, I think that going to this CREEPY place is the worst part!! Well, anyway. . . Well, The Gapping Chasm is pretty much in the bottom Southeast corner of Tanaris, Southeast of Dunemaul Compound and South of Broken Pillar. Scrimshank's Surveying Gear is in what many people are calling it, "The Spiral." Looking at the map, the spiral (in The Gapping Chasm,) is the thing with a curved line by it, which is on the most Eastern part of the Gapping Chasm. There are level 37-39 creeping alien dudes here, making this a little tricky, but being a 49 druid, I could just prowl to it. Once you enter the Spiral, there is a narrow tunnel, with different parts branching off from it. Take your first left. Proceed through the tunnel with caution, 'cause there's still alien dudes in here. Go to the end of that the tunnel, and then take the only other tunnel that has been untraveled (the tunnel you didn't come in through) in this little room. After a few seconds of traveling through this tunnel, there's a fork in the road. Take the left, (Man, you have to take left A LOT!!!,) and then you enter a REALLY WEIRD ROOM, and after taking a few steps into this room, turn left. Travel down that tiny little part of the room and there's the Surveying Gear. It takes a while, but hey, you get 6300experience and 250 rep. with Gadgetzan!

This quest wouldn't have been that easy. It was actually me (Lvl 51 Troll Fury Warrior) and two allies doing it. We had a nonverbal agreement to help each other (aka I waved at them and they didn't gank me). So 2 warriors and a hunter can do this quest super easy.

Watch out for the repops, though. These silithids repop really fast.

Another trick to do this quest and a few others (if the graveyard is nearby) is to scope out the location of where you need to go as a ghost rather than risk triple pulling because of a wrong turn. Good hunting.

I found this quest easily soloable on my 46 sublty rogue. I just stealthed my way thru the chasam till i found the cavern. With the "creative" use of my distract, I was able to get all the way to the "Butterfly room". At the entrance was a lvl 50 worker, which resisted all of my distracts. So eventually I tried to sneak past, but he saw me and pulled a wasp in, also which in turn pulled a tunneller in. (You rouges that are gonna try this make sure u bring some flash powder with you. I ran out about 5 minutes before trying this quest). Anyway, when i got back to my body, I just roamed the room as a ghost till I found the equipment (which is confirmed, upper left "wing tip" of butterfly.). Went back, got my body and stealthed to the spot, where there was a level 48 tunneller. He called in a swarmer and the tunneller and I died at the same time. Came back, got my body and the equipment, and stealthed out. This time the worker took the distract and I got out easily. XD Have fun!

I killed fast enough on my 51 Shadow Priest to only have at most 2 swarmer adds by the time I killed the Swarmers so only 4 adds that all die with 1 hit of a wand. Fights went something like PW: Shield, Vampiric Touch, SW: Pain, Mind Blast, Mind Flay twice and they would die. I also found killing the adds that, assuming your melee skill is high enough to not miss a ton, a melee swing on one followed by a wand shot on the other led to the fastest killing of the spawns.

As an FYI to the Shadow Priests, you'll get a few extra ticks of Spirit Tap if you have the skill. The adds trigger it when you kill them.

In conclusion, to all this info the basic directions are go down the ramp at 55,70 first left tunnel you see go left keep going left down into a circle room. Left again and when you get to a butterfly shaped room go left again and congratulations you have found the gear!

The tunnels are linked so it doesn't matter which one you take. Just follow the paths that DON'T lead tto dead ends (pretty damn easy to tell) and make yourself to the butterfly room.

Easily solod with my 47 affliction lock. Just sent my voidy in, DOTed the bugs. Had to wander around for a bit, key to finding his gear is to remember that is it actually in the butterfly room.

As a lvl 49 holy pally this was soloeable but it was still a bit difficult since I had to use a ton of drinks and food so as not to waste mana or run out. In the fights, the method I used was to holy shock, seal of crusader, judgment, righteousness, judgment, holy shock, hammer of wrath, and then consecrate to kill the little spawns. It was possible to kill two at once and I managed three one time simply because I had a couple potions to use- without those, three would have killed me. I took the advice someone said earlier and set my hearth to gadgetzan because I did not want to run all the way back out of that cave. I also only had to bubble twice, so all in all, I think it was fairly manageable since I didn't die once. :)

An easy quest for a 48 prot pally. Only one 3-pull at the end was any real challenge, needing a bubble-bandage at one point. (The 3-pull happened in the final butterfly room next to the quest pickup, and I'm pretty sure this can't turn into a 4-pull with running workers because the only mobs nearby had already come as part of the 3-pull.)

If you're a pally, keep Retribution Aura active at all times when in the hive. Both the Parasites that spawn when a bug is killed, as well as the little Swarm bugs have low (1?) health and will die from a single hit against that aura; in plate, you shouldn't be seeing more than 1 damage from the little swarm bugs and at most low double digits from the one hit each you might take from the Parasites.

This is probably really an easy quest in general for anyone who does not depend on pushback-able spells to fight and survive; the mini bugs do very little damage so their only real problem is the spell interruption. I'd take Blizzard's level for this quest as a pretty strong recommendation, if you are lower you may have more issues due to a larger aggro radius (as I entered the hive, I saw a 45 warrior making a run for it, if that's any indication).

When you enter the tunnels, you will see a large room that looks like a purple butterfly. Weird but it was the first thing that came to mind when i looked. Anyway, the gear looks like on of the BuzzBoxes around Auberdine. It was guarded by 1 lvl 48 monster. Easily picked up with a little stealth action.....

I went in the hive entrance at 55,69 . from there take a right down into a large room. procede strait threw, when you hit the other hallway take a right. You should be going down deeper into the hive. When you reach the large room at the bottom its in the top right corner. 55,71

56.71 is right according to both thottbot and my own experience. That's the northwest corner of the square room, you'll see a round room north of it, and another one west.

When you get to the cave faceing DOWN the twirling ramp, its the RIGHT cave.

Once you go in VEER RIGHT again. You will come to a circle like room, stay on the left to avoid the roamer. The only way I could get past the 10 or so bugs was to run close to the left most corner and run back dead (48 fire mage).

If you're on the left most side (At least at 48) and stick to the wall like GLUE there is a nearby bug that wont attack you. Go to the left most corner and be aware there is a roamer that will go in there on occasion. Kill it AFTER you kill the other one if you can't hearth out. Make sure you can HEARTH out, preferably to Gadgetstan.

Best of luck, this was a cruel quest!

Some of you need to learn right from left.

When come to the hive there will be two opening, one upper and one lower. Take the uppper opening.

You will come to a "Y" just as you enter, go LEFT.

You will enter a large round room, proceed through the tunnel (only one).

From here you will enter a large square room (butterfly shape as some call it) room with four distinct corners, go left. If you look at the mini-map, it would the North-West direction.

There it is, gaurded by one insect. Level will generally be between 47 - 49, depending on respawn.

If you are a Rogue 46+ or Druid 48+, you can stealth through easily. Rogues will find it easier to use distract to make sure the insects are looking in the other direction.

For other classes, it's pretty much a fight through. Insects are a tough bunch for their level and there are plenty of patrols inside - so keep an eye out.

I soloed this as a 47 Mage without much trouble and without dying once. Frost Nova (insta-AOE) helps a lot against the little parasites (sometimes 2 or 3) that spawn after you kill a bigger bug. Follow the steps below to find the objective:

1. Enter the Gaping Chasm region and head for the middle of the purple slime. You'll see the main entrance to the lair near the center of that region, with large raised ridges nearby.

2. When you get to the entrance, there will be two holes leading down into the lair. Take the northern-most hole. In other words, the one to your righthand side as you descend the outer ramp.

3. When you come to the first fork, just inside, take a right which will lead you to an oval-shaped room with just a few bugs between 47-49. Kill the ones in the way and make your way to the opposite side of the round room.

4. From the other side of the round room, you'll find a path that leads to a slightly larger square room. As you enter the square room, stick to the right wall and make your way into the corner guarded by a level 50 bug. The object is there, behind him, and is large enough to target from all the way across the room.

Quest solo'd as a 48 paladin. Ran into a tauren, took care of him and got to the item with ease, before he even made it back.

Paladin Tips!

If low on health/mana, activate seal of light/wisdom. If you have it, use consecration on the adds that spawn. Otherwise, use devotion aura against the big guy then, as they spawn, switch to retribution aura. Conserve mana!

I soloed this with a 45 warlock. After killing the bugs just outside the entrance, I hung around there for a while while I scouted out the inside of the lair with the Eye of Kilrogg, to make sure I had the route down cold. Then I made a kamikaze run for the item: soulstoned myself and ran into the lair, letting my voidwalker take the aggro until it was nearly dead, then sacrificed it and ran the rest of the way. As I'd expected, the bug guarding the item, along with the posse that were following me by then, killed me before I could open it. I waited for the posse to disperse, rezzed myself, and Feared the guard, which gave me enough time to summon the VW again. The VW held off the guard long enough for me to open the item, and then hearthstone out.

Ok theres this big hole with 2 caves. Walk down the huge spiral. You'll reach one cave first walking down the spiral. PASS that cave and go to the next one.

Once in this cave basically just keep going right and you will enter the "butterfly room." If you look on your minimap this looks like a butterfly because there are 4 curved corners. While entering this butterfly room, go to the forward-right (northeast) part of the room where a metal like box will be guarded by a 49 elite bug.

I'm a 45 mage and I basically used mana shield and ice barrier to run to this point, I rezzed a little in front of the machine and healed up to kill the bug.

As the poster above suggest for hunters, I just did some slow grinding as I worked my way to the room with my lvl 45 hunter. Beast build with broken tooth. Made it all the way to the room with the machine in it before I got overwhelmed. Didn't have any problems with doing 2 at once excet for when I hit the room I aggroed 3.
Ran to the NW corner, got at the opening to the area where the box is, died.
Rezzed just out of range of the bug guarding the box, aggroed the entire room, died, rezzed at healer.
At level 45 the XP was the same as the lvl 47 lock who posted all the rewards. 4400 for the main quest.

Just did this quest.

The directions given above suck if you don't have a coordinate mod installed (or, like me, don't want to just know exactly where to go by looking at a number).

The equipment is in the actual underground silithid hive itself, in the 'Gaping Chasm' area of Tanaris. The whole place is crawling with various Hazzari Silithids.

The easiest approach I found was to enter the hive in the 'middle' of the Gaping Chasm, at the large central hole. There is a spiral ramp leading down; go to the left at the bottom of the ramp. Follow the tunnels (also to the left, though everything to the right is dead ends) until you reach a large X-shaped room (it's very distinctive on the map; it is referred to above as the "butterfly room", and it does sort of look like one on the minimap due to the coloring.) The gear is in the alcove in the NW corner of that room. It actually looks like a gnomish control console.

There are a lot of 48-50 bugs down there; visibility is poor because of the twisting tunnels, and there are a number of patrolling Hazzari Swarmers (who can overwhelm you if you don't have AOE). If you take it slowly, you should be able to just fight one mob at a time. If you can stealth, and you're at least L45, you can probably sneak in and only have to fight one or two enemies (maybe none if you have a way to CC the one standing by the equipment you need).

wow i dont know what all the talk is about, being a rouge this was the easiest quest ever, i stealthed in and never took a hit, if u take the lower cave entrance, just take a right at the fork, continue through the large room, and then take the next right at the second fork, objective is on the opposite side of this large cavern and slightly to the right if you are facing out of the tunnel that leads into the chamer, extremely simple

There was some debate above about right and left, and which opening you go in.

You can go in either opening, north or south. Most here seemed to have said the north opening, but the south opening is actually a shorter trip - the south tunnel is shorter and comes out in the butterfly room on the side that the surveyor's equipment is. The western end of the room, according to the minimap.

Directions: You walk down the south tunnel. When you come into the larger "butterfly" room, immediately turn to your left. There's the equipment. One guard, as mentioned several times.

But really, even as a level 49 druid trying to stealth through, I'll never do it or another hive quest again. All the same, all boring.

i think this quest could be relatively easy for a rogue its pretty annoying for a mage =[i kept going to the wrong sections of the chamber because they all look the same with the minimqap up close to figure out which section it is max ur mini map nd 3 of em look the same then one is longer nd thats the one with the box thingy

This is an easy quest if people would only post how to do it instead of tellingothers how easy it was cuz they had stealth

1. go to the gaping chasm located at 53,69 at the bottom east part of tanaris
2. Go to the center of the hive where there is an opening located at the coords above and enter
3. make your way down the spiral ramp killing whoever you want of just jump in.
4. go into the opening of the tunnel, and once in there take a right down the tunnel to the right.
5. continue south, killing any mobs u need to, and u will end up in a large oval-shaped room. Stick to the right walls, walking counter clockwise around the room and enter the room haped like a butterfly or an "X"
6. In that room you will have to travel to the far left tip where you will find the loot.

Hope thats easy enough, and please, for the billionth time, STOP POSTING ON HOW EASY IT WAS FOR U, INSTEAD POST ON HOW TO DO IT!

It's an easy quest if you can get to the cavern; there's nothing in the cavern that's worse than anything outside of it. Whether you find yourself able to get to the cavern is a whole other matter.

Paladins, use Ret aura or Consecration for the Swarmers. Druids use Thorns. Mages, use Magma shield or somesuch. If you have some way of doing damage to creatures that attack you, use it - the swarmer minions are only slightly tougher than totems, and they'll come to you to die.

I have tips for Druids, as I soloed this at 48 as balance Druid.

Remember to keep thorns up! The little spawns will die in one hit as they attack!

Keep barkskin up when fighting the swarmers, so you don't get interrupted by the mass spawns, and you take less damage!

If you follow both these tips you, like me can solo this as a 47+ Druid. I even made it out fighting everything!

there are two caves you can take, thay both lead to the the same place so dont worrie about wich one to go through. the surveying gear is in the far northwestern most part of the room that is shaped like a butterfly. in the part comes to a narrow spot.

Which cave is closer to the equipment? Idgas if you found the stuff, you're supposed to say "oh, its here" on the MINIMAP, none of us care about what the hell it looks like, we can figure that out in a few seconds. Show us where the hell it is WITHOUT using a picture of the 20 square feet around it.

Almost forgot... is this quest retarded or something? What does this have to do with Tauren starter quests? And the quest doesn't have any rewards, not to mention the fact that the rewards you listed, aside from the helm, don't even exist.

I don't know why people said go to the right when it's the left corridor you had to take. I took the right and it ended with nothing but more bugs. The only reason I found the gearbox is because I saw a comment about it being on the left so all I took was lefts. It was by accident that I even saw the gearbox, it's in a alcove with a 47-48 bug guarding it. I tried to leave but everything had respawned and I was getting ambushed with pats so I ended up feigning death (49 NE Hunter) and hearthing out.

This quest is not worth it in my opinion, not for the xp or reward. Skip it if you can.

To find the gear go down the ramp, there will be 2 tunnels you want the tunnel at the bottom of the ramp. Once you enter the cave you want to go right at the fist intersection.

There will be a large circular room, head through the room to the next tunnel, you will come to another intersection, go right again

You will come to another large room, the equipment is located in the N.W. corner of that room. The room looks sort of like a square on the mini map, but it is more like a X shaped place.

There are alot of critters in the tunnels, and some are lvl 50, although the quest is rated 48, and is yellow at 47, you should wait till 48 to do it. The swarmers are killer for casters.

Either entrance will work. Just make your way to what looks like a square room on your mini map. The gear is in a box that resembles the buzzboxes from darkshore. This box is located in one of the corners, guarded by a beetle. Watch out for the patrol that comes by though.

There are two lairs (cave systems). The main one (with the machine) spirals down starting at 55,68. The other lair starts at 53,74. The main lair has two "cave entances". They both go into the same lair system and both will get you to the machine! Hederahelix is correct that other than squashing alot of bugs theres nothing worthwhile in the rest of the lair.

It is easiest if you go to the bottom-most entrance.

once in, make your first right into an oval room. go straight across the oval room and into a short tunnel. take the next right and into the square room. from this entrance, you can nearly go straight and see the survey equipment in the northwest corner of the room.

on the mini-map the corner with the survey equipment appears more protruding than the others.

I don't like how people write a "novel" on how to complete the quests.

Please state the following only:

1) The Reward (xp, reputation, etc)
2) Location coordinates(Cosmo, metamap, etc), short directions accepted.

Who cares how you did it as a rogue or as a spellcaster. After hitting lvl 45, strategy has barely ever changed from lvl 20 or so.

Whoever said don't go in as a mage: Found this very easy as mage.

Never had more than one of these on me at a time, which should be easy to do for any mage who is good at pulling. I don't think many are linked at all. Make sure you have Nova/COC/AE ready for the little buggers that attack you after you kill the big ones.

soloed this as a 48 warlock swarmers are a nightmare make sure u have a few potions of health and a soulstone up as they spawn quite quick once u get to the main room take a small area at a time once u get to the equipment stone out to save your sanity

Did this quest as a 49 Retro Paladin (with a 45 Retro Paladin). AoE spell like Consecration works like a charm on the swarmers.

Not Bugged...Thottbot say that it is bugged or hard to get...it is not...I was finally able to find the "buzzbox looking thing"....as soon as you walk into the "sqaure" room make a sharp left, actually more like a U-Turn. We cleared that room numerous times and never once saw the "buzzbox". It is really easy to over look...

Enter the hive, take the left tunnel, once in the hive turn left and head down the tunnel to the round room, cross this room, and enter the "sqaure" room (more like a jacked up H), as soon as you enter make a hard left (like a u-turn) and it should be right there.

At level 47 I stealthed through the entire cave-thing past all the mobs and only had to kill one spiderey thing and got the quest item. It was really easy once I realized I had to go down there, it would have taken forever to kill all of them though. That guys directions are how i got there by the way so they are accurate and it's not bugged :)

Wow love fun easy quests like this lol, also love the challenging ones but got too many of those in Un'goro atm lol.

So did this as a lvl49 rogue, nothing was guarding the machine, there was a sawrmer there but it was patroling so watched it leave then collected, so this quest - as a rogue - can be done without killing anything lol.

Enter the cave at something like 54:68 and go down the ramp and take the entrance directly ahead (SouthWest).

When you enter the cave take each left, you can't miss it :)

Did this solo as a level 44 Hunter (BM spec) with no deaths (save for my pet, who died once when I had to FD).

Was quite easy, no deaths, just have to move slowly, but steadily. I managed to snag a Truesilver and a Thorium vein :D

The quest was fairly simple as a rogue. I aggroed some bugs at only level 47 as they are level 50ish. It is past the room with the circle, it is sort of in a little branch of its own outside of the circle area. Only 1 bug guarding it, a level 48 I believe.

As stated earlier the directions are very good but as a 49 priest I found that trying to fight my way in was a bit more effort than I really wanted to do. This may be a bit of a cheat and not in the full spirit of the game but some days you just want to get it done.

Entered from the east and got to the tunnel entrance with only having to take out a few mobs. At the entrance I cast my shield and started running. I built up a nice train but by casting renew and a couple of fears as I ran I was able to make it all the way to the square room and where the gear was stored and ran up to where the box was and allowed my self to die there.

I ran back to my corpse from Gadgetzan's graveyard and at the box I found that there was only one mob guarding it and it was a bit forward. Behind the box was a bit of space and a circular indent in the wall. I stood in this spot and watched the area for a bit and saw that there was one mob on partol that would wander into this area from time to time. I waited until it had left and only the stationary mob was there and then I ressurected. I had expected to agro the mob and was planning on re-casting my shield using a mana pot and then desperate prayer if needed while I took out the mob. However, the mob ignored me and I was able to build up a bit of health and mana before taking it out.

I then opened the box, took the gear and hearthstoned out.

As I said this is a bit of cheat but it was 3:00am in the morning when I did this and no one was available to group with and I wanted to finish this before going to bed.

I went in as a 48 Mage. The little pain in the butt swarmers were just that, but I made sure I saved my cone of cold. Once I killed anything, I cast that and killed all of the little pests before they could cause problems.

Of course, if I had to fight 2 big bugs at once, it was at best a close match. Add a third, and I had a long way to run back from the cemetary.

Of course, to make matters worse, I killed what I thought was the last big bug, and before resting (drinking and eating) I got the gear. Turned around, was ambushed and killed. The moral of the story is don't get greedy. Eat, drink, then be merry with the booty.

Don't know if anyone else was as dumb as I am but THERE ARE TWO CAVES/HIVES. One - yes, the correct one, has two entrances and is exactly where the coords say it is, at 54,70. The other completely separate hive is just a bit farther south at 54,75. If you go in the wrong hive, guess what? You can't do the quest.

If you don't have coords, all I can say is that the RIGHT cave is much larger. If you get in one and it's nothing but a curved passage and one round room, that's the wrong one.

Solo'd as 47 lock w/ voidwalker, the swarmers were the most annoying to deal with - I suggest you try to avoid them if you can. Rest of mobs were easily beaten: sic VW, stack dots, fear when they agro onto you and drain life/soul. Fear only generated adds maybe once or twice, so it's no real problem. Most of the mobs are spaced out well so adds weren't really an issue for me (except patrollers, keep an eye out for them). Gained 6550exp for this quest. The followup gave me an additional 7850exp too.

Cat form stealthed my way through the entire thing as a 46 druid. The bugs have good stealth perception, so stay as well away as possible. Only fought two bugs, one of which was near the equipment and was 49, the other was a 50 that spotted me on my way out. I just let it kill me and rezzed at the graveyard.

I can see why these bugs are a caster's nightmare. They hit extremely hard. :/

At level 46 this quest was yellow in my log, so I thought I might as well go ahead and do it. Then I got to the Gaping Chasm. I knew I needed the XP, so I mounted up and got as far as I could to the cave entrance and shadowmelded, as I stripped my armor off. As a warrior I went into defensive stance and just death ran following instructions previously posting. Once I got to the supplies, I rezzed from dying before and shadowmelded while I put my armor back on. I was confident that I could solo a level 50, since I could grind on elites without a problem. Then an add came. I saved up the rage and did an intimidating shout to get them off of me and nabbed the goods. I sacrificed a gold or two from using the spirit rezzer, but it was worth it.

You won't believe how simple it is... the secret to finding the item for this quest is to keep making right turns in the cave and it will lead it to you.

Exact Coords are 55,71. Although the actually tunneling network is somewhat complicated.

if you r a caster, never go in there. unless you are a holy priest with holy Nova. thats the only place i found holy nova useful. rank3 shield may also work, but it is hard.

soloed at 46 druid, died 3 times cuz i went the wrong direction :S and i got caught twice. was overall pretty easy. very intence sneaking thru there but fun.

Was not successful in sneaking around, but got a couple of green drops in process of killing 25 to 30 of the bugs. Retribution Aura quickly kills swarmers and parasites.

Level 50 plus Paladin should find this pretty easy.

Read direction above in post "Good Directions..." if you want to avoid taking the grand tour.

Saw a level 53 Undead mage going in. Used all his Mana to kill two of them. Suspect he will find it tough going once he gets underground.

Alright, your posts are wrong, the item comes off of a clickable item, called Scrimshank's Surveying Gear, and it drops in the big set of caves in the Gaping Chasm.

Crystal Spire need to do the prereqs which can be done quickly (if not carefully at 50) by anyone with a horse.

The damage shield from Crystal Spire kills the swarmers and parasites in one hit.

I tried inching my way in following the previous directions. Had minimal sucess, got to the room right before the one with the box in it, and had a problem with adds (mainly the swarmers). I ended up running in, dying, , rez, summon pet, having pet distract the mob guarding it, while I looted/hearthed.

Great instructions, only I'd add these start from the VERY top of the hole in the ground not the first "entrance" You do have to be quite quick as the respawn rate can be treachorous. If you die in there you're a gonna.

Why is this quest yellow to me at level 46? I should know better than to attemp things before checking this site, but I'm stubborn and since it was yellow I thought I should be able to do it. I can easily kill 49's but a quest that involves 50's should at the very least be orange.

Did it as lvl 47 Rogue. Easy pie.
Word of advice: Go in through the eastern entrance of the cave, 'cause that shortest. Stealthed all the way, helped by some clever distracting, and only had to kill the tunneler closest to the thing. Aggroed a patroling stinger though, but got rid of it with a vanish.

To find the gear go down into the hole in the cavern. You will see two tunnels go into the one that's the lowest down after entering turn right (east) as soon as you can and you'll end up in a good sized circular room, go competly through that room following the hall and at the split turn right (south), you'll enter a squarish room and the surveying gear will be in the corner to the west.

Side Note: You'll find several Mithril Veins in these underground tunnels.

Did this with my 47 pally. Not a problem if you go nice and slow. Most of the mobs were 47-48. There are only a few lvl 50s. The directions given in a previous post were dead-on. This was some easy xp.

I did this as a 46 mage. The pit you want is farthest east towards the mountains. It is the only one with two entrances. The SW entrance is the right one. All lefts to the survey equipment is right. I was doing okay fighting them one at a time and healing and mana up after each one or two. Found the survey equipment and was killing the 50 guarding it when the lvl 49 swarmer patrolling jumped me from behind. There is no where near there to rez and have time to buff, heal, and mana up. I had to rez near the mouth of the tunnel and frost nova the lvl 50 in place when he came for me. Put on mana shield and ran for the survey equipment. Had time to collect it before they killed me. Came back and ran for the exit as far as I could before they killed me. After about three tries made it back into the mountains and teleported to SW for repairs. If you time it right with the roaming one that goes into the tunnel with the equipment you shouldn't have the same problem.

Did this at 48. For those warlocks out there don't get close to the swarmers. let the VW take the hits and use your RoF when its almost dead.

I'm demon specced, tougher VW. Not sure how well it'd work with other specs.

On the way into the tunnels there were many adds. Go slow on this one.

The coordinates inside the cave are 56,71 in the big rectangular room, past the first big round room. When you enter the rectangular room coming from the tunnel, make a sharp left and you will see the surveying equipment at the back of that part of the cave guarded by one mob. There's another mob that pats and might annoy you while you're fighting the guard, you might want to get it first if you are not high enough to handle two.

As a warlock when you are confronted with a swarmer try to kill it fast, it will spawn a ton of little mobs. When the swarmer is half health start rain of fire or hell fire, and dont forget your howl of terror. Hell fire works well if you sacrifice your pet and start it at 3/4 swarmer health.

The tunnelers have at least 2 mobs that spawn that have low health so when the tunneler dies immediatly enter attack mode, that will take those little guys down.

Just be sure to take time to med between kills.

Soloed without a death. Just one bug at a time. Arcane Explosion when the two bugs dropped. They are killed instantly.

The lair itself is quite depressing. Poor young Scrimshank :p

Frostbolt, then fireball and fireblast, then frost nova. Two steps back, fireball again and fireblast. If enemy still alive, arcane missiles. Don't forget the explosion after the kill!

Sometimes a patrol will attack as well. Then don't panic, kill the first one. Your nova should be active now. Cast it, step back, apply mageweave and if necessary, mana jade.

Sometimes three are coming. After finishing the first. Cast nova. Mageweave then fireball, presence of mind and fireball again, then fireblast. Now cone of cold and arcane again.

If nova ready, cast and step back for evocation.

That's all :p

The directions are perfect. This quest must of been made with a rogue in mind. I stealthed all the way from the edge of Gaping Chasm. The only bug I had to kill was the one guarding the toolbox. Stealthed in..stealthed out...easy!

Why does everyone presume that everyone uses co-ords? Please don't misinterpret this as being an anti co-ord post, it isn't, but personally I prefer not to use them. I actually enjoy the game without them. BUT. It would be nice if more people described how to get to these places without the use of co-ords more often.

It's nice to read about other peoples experiences on how they completed it. I like to know the levels etc they were completed at, and to those people who provide this, thank you.

Don't be put off by the children screaming 'I only want a co-ord, don't waste my time with descriptions' These fools are incapable of not reading a post they aren't interested in, why take what they say seriously?

Both approaches to the info is relevant and welcomed because not everyone plays the game in the same style.

So thank you again to those who do take the time to relay thier own experiences and give details of how to reach these destinations. I for one appreciate it greatly.

i just fought my way trough.. i wanted to stealth but it's just impossible as a lvl 46 balance druid... and i made it with a lvl 43 shadow priest who was healing me when i was taking the blows and making crits like crazy... did need a lot of mana breaks but it was very easy

November, 2019: WoW Classic.
Just did this quest on a L47 BM Hunter, and it was not easy. First of all, be aware that taking the LOWER of the two ramps at the entrance allows you to enter the butterfly room' with minimal Swarmers. If you take the upper path, you'll need to face at least two.
When fighting the swarmers, the best tactic I found was to use Multishot on the first group of the little mini beetles that spawn, followed by Volley. Keep your pet healed, as those little bugs do a surpising amount of damage.
My pet died twice due to patrols ambushing me as I was fighting other mobs, but Feign Death saved the day.
Take it slow, don't rush, and pull carefully. The 'butterfly room' has several mobs, including those annoying Workers that run a mile at low health (use Concussive Shot). But most important, there's two slow, long-range patrols that come up the corridor leading to the butterfly room. They caught me from behind while I was fighting other mobs in the main chamber, which accounted for one of the pet deaths. Be aware of these patrols, and deal with them.
All in all a very tricky quest for Hunters, due to the narrow confines of the passages, the fleeing mobs, Swarmers, and many, many patrols. Slow and steady wins the race - make your you have PLENTY of water. I can't stress this enough, you'll be using many of your most mana-intensive abiltlities, and you're going to need it.

Never never never ever again. Went in as a well-equipped, well-armed level 50 hunter with a 48 pet. Feigned death a half dozen times, pet died a half dozen times, never did see the damned objective. *!@eddaboudit.

Soloed as a Level 50 Shadow Priest. Take the lower cave and you don't have far to run. The trick is to take your time and pick your way through carefully, if you go all gung ho you'll likely have issues. Always watch your back and if you need to eat or drink, always do it at the place where the last mob you killed was standing as things can respawn quick in here.

Couple of tips for specific mobs:

Swarmers - kill the tiny swarms first or the mob will keep summoning more and they will soon overwhelm you.
Workers - these mobs run in fear when they are low on health, be sure to use any CC abilities you might have to stop them. All I had was Mind Flay, but it worked.

The vast majority of the mobs in here spawn two parasites when they die, they have very little health but be ready for them and don't move on until they are dead.

This quest isn't too bad, just be wary of patrols and take it slow. If you're a paladin, retribution aura works like a charm against the tiny parasites.

Did this as a lvl 47 lock, drain tank build. Extremely easy, just go slow and take the top left entrance and make all your lefts if you don't have questie. Watch out for little swarmers, they all die in 1 hit but are pesky.

I remember doing this the first time around and, like a lot of quests, very difficult at level 46 and very easy at level 50. This time I got killed at the lower entrance to the cave at 55.8 69.05 because I had to take a phone call (work = the curse of the playing classes). Because my memory is the old organic sort instead of the newer versions that will make us all so smart, I thought I'd take advantage of being in the spiritual world and explore the caves to plot an exact course. I spent fifteen minutes covering every square centimetre of those lovely caves looking for Scrimshank's gear several times over. It wasn't anywhere.

Is it glitched? Maybe; although it worked pretty well fifteen years ago. But the time-constrained player (not only by work) can't take the time to find out. If the reward and XP was equal to the amount of time and effort involved, sure. But this is one of those peripheral quests that (editorial opinion) could have been retuned a bit in those past fifteen years with a few more dinero and/or a lot more XP. So Sayonara flies, bugs and assorted other insects. I'll see you later; right after the heat-death of the universe.

Do yourself a favour and skip this quest, unless you're a rogue or a feral druid.

Patrols come with adds (1-2, you can't see them around corners, but they'll walk into the battle). They either spawn an "infinite" number of adds upon dying or during the fight. You get this quest around level 45-46, but mobs inside are 47-50 - enjoy the mass resists/misses/parries/dodges. You will keep dying and there's little in the way of getting rewarded in here.

I'm doing this quest right now - I started doing it because hey, I'm like elite and stuff, been playing since vanilla yada yada yada. I died once and wasted 6 grenades to get rid of overwhelming adds.

You think you wanna do this quest, but you don't.

If you die, you will have to run all the way back from the graveyard at Gadgetzan in the far north part of the zone. :(

This quest is marked as being level 48. It should really be marked as level 50, because there WILL be at least a couple of level 50 bugs you'll have to fight your way through to get to the surveying gear.

As noted elsewhere this is very easy for stealth classes. As a 49 feral i just prowled all the way down to the unit, activated it, and got the quest item. Stealth back uptop and head to town

If you are mining there is an ore node right next to the equipment and that circle on mini-map migth obscure the equipment icon.

Oh, this is just terrible! I sent out my top assistant, Junior Surveyor Scrimshank, into the desert southeast of here. That's an area we call the Gaping Chasm. Well, he's gone missing, and his last report had more of those weird bugs where he was. Could it be that they've infested two major regions of the desert now?

I need you to head into the Gaping Chasm and look for Scrimshank, please! That... or at least find his surveying equipment. I fear that may be all that is left of the poor sod.
