Mages remember your fire ward when fighting these. It will absorb 2-3 of their "firespit" spells and make killing them even easier than it already is.

Their Flamespit attack has only 15 yard range, so casters and hunters can easily back up enough to make it fail while still doing damage. This is especially useful to shadow priests, who can back up to 20 yards and Mind Flay while the Roc casts and fails.

...also, has anyone else noticed that the location for these things forms a big question mark on the map?

They are pretty sparse, but you mostly find them around big kodo-like bones

I found a good amount or searing roc at 40,64 good for giant eggs

There are various comments here about what the Fire Rocs have and don't have, but none state patch numbers.

As of version 1.7 (September 13,2005) the Fire Roc does not have resists - no pets do. They will sometimes have Dive (Rank 2) when tamed (the one I tamed last night did). Their fire resist found in previous patches can be replaced with skills learned from a pet trainer, but with a limited number of training points on each pet, pick what you train carefully.

If you're hunting these for the eggs, they spawn around any of the old bones in the middle region. However, they share spawn locations with the Hyenas, so either a Roc will spawn or the Hyena. So you have to kill everything around the bones. It works best to just pick a large camp of them and farm non-stop. I got my 12 eggs in an hour, and a lot of exp at level 45.

it should be noted that these birds have 110 fire resist after being tamed.
