Er... is there a reason the armorsmithing upgradeable item is more beneficial to MS and Fury warriors than tanks?

Put two Thick Dawnstones (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=24052) and a Solid Star of Elune (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=24033) into this and you have the most well-rounded tanking chest in the game. Don't forget to put an +150hp-enchant (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/spell=27957) on it too.

The given stats are a good baseline, and the gems let you tailor your BP O' Kings to tanking, dps, or what have you. The blue socket is best for a stamina gem, and the two yellows allow for defense, crit, etc. I'm not looking forward to farming the motes, but I'm definitely looking forward to wearing the plate.

As a tank (and an armorsmith) I have to ask why I would want this? To be honest, I am really disappointed with the items that armorsmiths can make. Is this a nice all around breastplate? Sure. Is it a good breastplate? Sure.

But why would I go through the effort of making this (and the expensive costs!) when I can get a Jade-Skull Breastplate (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=28262) instead?

If we socket this with the best gems available (two Thick Dawnstones, one Solid Star of Elune) and compare the two, this has:

+104 armor
= strength
+7 stamina
+18 hit rating
+34 critical strike
-9 defense rating
-23 shield block rating

So, as a tank, would I take 104 armor, 7 extra stamina, and +18 hit rating over the 9 defense rating and 23 shield block rating I would lose? Not counting how much it costs to make the breastplate AND get the gems?

Now for PvP, sure this is a nice breastplate. But to upgrade it you need Primal Nether (heroics and some 5mans). Chances are good if you are running those you are tanking as a warrior or tanking/healing as a paly (not always though, sure). And if you were to try and upgrade again you would need Nether Vortex (25 man raids).

So why is a breastplate with a PvP application so dependent on PvE play to upgrade?

If someone can show me this is actually a better choice for tanking, I would love to hear it, however. But as of the moment, I almost regret being an armorsmith. On the other hand, as a paladin tank, none of the smithing options are particularly appealing to me.

EDIT-- the only viability I see is that if the tank is past 490 defense without a breastplate, that they could socket this with 3 Solid Stars of Elune, granting an impressive 81 stamina. Paladin tanks, unfortunately, usually have enough troubles with mitigation that this would be a hard point to reach, but it may be easier for warriors.

i made this last night

put 3 solid stars of elune in it,

i'm a tank who's past 490 defence, and the stamina this thing gives you is awesome

i wont be replacing it in a hurry

except when i get ten nethers.....

Just throwing this out there because no one has said it yet, a Ret Pally could also make use of this chest piece depending on how it was socketed and what enchant was put on it depending on what kind of parameters he/she was lacking in.

Considering this chestpiece already has formidable crit and hit rating for it's level, I decided to blatantly screw the socket bonus and just stack it up with the one thing it lacks: Strength. 3x Bold Living Ruby, putting the totals at:
55 Strength
46 Stamina
20 Hit rating
31 Crit rating

Formidable in every way that matters, can't wait to upgrade it. Only downside is that it requires 10 Nethers to upgrade, which is kinda bollocks considering I'll probably have the 2 (yes, just 2) Vortexes for the tier3 sooner than I'll have 10 Nethers for tier2. Ah well, it keeps me off the streets.

not to mention, might i add, that this plate leads up to a VERY nice tanking plate in the end since this plate IS in fact required to make that piece in the end, 1.8k armor, 56 stamina, and 40-50 STR, 3 sockets as well as usage that gives about 1.5k health...that sounds like it's great tanking to me?

the crit and strength on this thing are decent but honestly? spending that much gold/time getting this item just isnt worth it.

Jade skull is the better choice for entry level tanking into kara (as this is all this is good for as a tank trying to raid)

Chestguard of Exile https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=31320#dropped-by is a wiser choice for kara dps until you get something better; it isnt quite as nice as this (you lose maybe a few str/crit and 20 hit) but on my server it sells for like 500-800g, the mats for this are in the 850-900 range, not to mention the hassle of getting transmutes or farming.

And for PvP, it has no resilience. no need to go farther than that.

Maybe if Blizz does the smart thing and re-itemizes this line so the stam is lower and str is higher
(+40 str, +28 stam would be amazing and would balance the item level following the 2stam=1stat formula, plus maybe RYY for socks) these would be worth working for...otherwise BS will remain only worth doing for the BOP epic weapon lines.

Basically this item is not worth the effort and/or cost for tanks.

This item is a disappointment as far as a Protection Warrior is concerned as it requires an immense amount of time farming mats for Primal Might or expensive purchasing off the Auction House.

If you are a dedicated enough player to get this chest piece you will quickly find yourself replacing it as you progress. This is because even socketed up with two +8 defense gems and one +12 stamina gem you will find this item getting quickly replaced with something more tank-friendly in quality.

There are many tanking chests in level 70 dungeons and though most require a lot of effort the effort is free and requires only time and patience. Whereas farming primals requires just the same while also incurring transmute fees, buying mats or the Primal Mights themselves from the Auction House.

Also time spent collecting mats is time that you could be in dungeons getting other gear and not only for your chest slot.

However; this makes a FANTASTIC starting level 70 DPS piece and for those Fury and Arms Warrios out there I would recommend this (socket to your liking).
Retribution Paladins will also like this (again socket to your liking) though they might prefer something else.

This chest piece is meant for DPS not tanking which is a disappoint due to the multitude of Tanking Warriors who chose Armorsmithing for the nice lower level tanking pieces it gives but knowing they lack an end game craftable.

DPS melee - get it if you want it is a nice piece and will last a while
Tanks - wait and save/sell mats you will get better soon.

Why would you socket it for defense? Socket bonuses aren't worth it most of the time, and as a tank +4 crit rating is really a joke compared to +24 sta.

And if a DPS warrior knows what he's doing, he's not putting anything but Bold Living Rubies in it, unless he needs some for the meta.

I think its kind of lame that Blizz didn't give armorsmith's a more tank oriented piece. Weaponsmiths got some nice dps pieces, why would you make armorsmithing dps as well? I admit if you socket it with stam gems it can be a nice tank piece for a short while but even after both upgrades the badge gear is better. I just made this for my DPS offset gear but for tanking I use the badge chest.

and i only bought one primal might and had some very nice player's do the TM's for nothing, + my 60 mag did two for me ..

Please note the expenses of this item...

Hardened Adamantite Bars each require 10 regular adamantite to make just one hardened bar.

Eternium Bar is an item that you find much like swiftthistle where it is found among other veins of ore, and it requires two ores to make one bar.

Khorium Bar is quite hard to find in the low lvl areas but can be farmed w/o much trouble... I've also been finding alot of Eternium from these, but two ore make a bar...

Excluding the primal might in this recipe would mean you would have to get around 60 Adamantite Bars, 12 Khorium ores, and god knows how many veins needed to be farmed to find all that eternium...

If that alone doesn't stop to make you think of time spent vs time using (time using>time farming for upgraded version)Primal might ain't no picnic neither :P As far as I am aware, this item isnt a drop and can only be gotten through Alchemist and they can only make this ONCE a day. So unless you have connections be prepared for massive farming for all of these mats or begin saving up mass gold for this item.

Personally I know that I am going after it merely because i am insane and driven like that, but it occurs to be that once you get to lvl 70 to use this there may be bigger and better out there.

i'm in the process of crafting this myself. as a miner, you shouldn't have that much trouble getting a good portion of the mats yourself (hell even just from leveling up throughout the zones)

by the time you hit level 70, a miner should have at least 10 primal earth in his or her bank, mainly cuz they drop in veins so often and the same goes for the eternium. motes of fire are somewhat uncommon but hopefully you have 4 or 5 laying around.

pending you quested a lot in nagrand, you should also have 1 or 2 primals of air/water from the elementals. this is a great spot to farm up these 2 primals.

the water elementals in the lake next to the broken one village (sunspring village) is your farming target.

for air, head to spirit fields around where durrn paths around and kill the air elementals. just ride around and do a 360 surrounding osh'gun, or w/e that giant cave is called) i also came across a number of fel iron, adamantite, and rich adamantite veins on this route

i'm too lazy to farm the mobs in netherstorm which drop motes of mana so i either have guildies gimme a few or i buy them off the AH, but either way i'm saving hundreds of gold regardless from the rest of the mats i have farmed

if you still need mats to hit 350 smithing to learn this pattern, go to zangarmarsh in the NW ogre cave and scope around the area for veins. while you wait for repops, check at the dead mire for more by going along the edges of mountains and on the far cliffs of that area where the basilisks lurk around.

I'm glad they've given blacksmiths some gear that is REALLY worth it. I mean, if you look at this piece alone, there isn't really anything that drops in an instance that's better, even the tier 4 and 5 raid sets...well, at least until you upgrade it to the Ancient Bulwark of the Kings...then it's basically the best chestpiece in the game atm...from what I've seen.

The use ability, from what I understand, is basically like an instant heal as well, which can come in VERY handy when your healer needs that extra second for a heal...and throw in com shout, and you've got two heals.

As for my experience getting the mats, I had all the metals that I needed by the time I hit 70 and then some, so that wasn't even an issue. I didn't feel like going through all the hassle of getting xmutes, so I just buy the Primal Mights off AH. At about 80g each (Gul'dan server), it's a bit pricy. Still, at about 700g total for the 8 primal mights (give or take), it's worthwhile, and honestly, for the prices that Primals go for on AH (about 30g per Primal Fire), you'd do better to just sell those off and then buy the Primal Mights anyways, plus nail yourself a profit!

As for Primal Fires, best farm spot I've found is in Blade's Edge Mountain, where you have to do the two quests for the three patches of soil and the Scorch Imps. We got about 10 motes in a little under 25 minutes of just killing and stuff, so it shouldn't be too hard.

I'm going to be making this chestpiece either tonight or tomorrow, and then it's the long haul of getting some Primal Nether...grrr....

weill idonno about you, but for me eternium isnt probmem.

during my mining to 375 and smithing to 360, i got around 40-60 eterniums. on ah they goes 1-3g each ore.

then, khorium lovely khorium, ive got only 4. flying around blade's edge and other places ive seen it and simply cant find anything above adamantite, tops rich adamantite.

eternium btw, is randomly dropping off all veins, and by my exp best drop % is at adamantites, sometimes upto 1 for each swing but avg 1 per 1-3 veins.

I'm going throught eh X-mutes now. I had nearly everything I needed by the time I was 70. only thing I was short on was air and water, and water is fairly easy to farm. Air is IMO the big bottle-neck with getting this item.

I spent around 14 hours farming air elementals in Shoadowmoon to get enough, on and off, over the coarse of 3 days.

The Khorium, the adamantite, the eternium was cake if you farm at all for tradeskills as you don't really have anything to use Khorium on OR eternium on by the time you are at 350 smithing anyway. Migth as well save what you get, and once you hit 350, hoard adamantite untill you have 10 hardened bars.

All in all, I think for the effort you have to put into this BP, the reward is incredible, beacuse it isn't that hard to gather these mats.

Now i understand that some people don't realize that you can't sell or trade this item. That is because this is like a perk for plate wearing armorsmiths, same as the netherchain and such for the mail side of armorsmith. Hammersmiths can make hammers with 118dps straight out etc etc. Another thing is while is will be fun to get the 10 primal nethers, 10 primal manas (not that hard at 70). The Bulwark of the ancient kings take Nether Vortex's which are epic drops. Now as much as people want this breastplate before they could probably even get the mats for it the next expansion or patch will have an even better breastplate. I am now working on the bulwark but don't think i want to spend countless hours for a few more armor and a heal spec nice as it is don't waste all of your life unless you dont have one.

I dont know whether to go with armorsmithing to make this or weapon smithing to make me a great offhand sword. I think I might go with armor because it seems like their are plenty of weps I could get from the numerous raids at lvl 70. This would be great on my fury warrior.

I just got it it's nice. And the upgrade will be nice too. the primal might sucks but that's the worst part. i found it easier to just quest for the gold. It took me about a week to get of just casual playing. but i also farmed the mats for like 3 or 4.

Having trouble making myself spend out on this piece, im a tank and need input, i was wondering if i put a +12sta, and 2x +8def gems in the sockets would it be worth my while making this i cant see any other chest piece to upgrade into epic i have doomplate chest at the mo.

Is it worth spending nearly 1200g on?

I just made this about 2 hours ago, I was ditching my old Blackened Chestplate with +6 all on it. I drop +30 agility by making this switch but added 3 Jagged Talasite so with the +4 crit socket bonus and an additional +31 just for wearing it, I'm happy with the results.

As I upgrade to the next phase of this piece and then the final, I'm aware of my losing the gems during the process but could care less because I like wearing things I crafted myself. It's that personal touch. Sounds stupid to some because there are probably quite a few players wearing this who made their own as well, but the work I put into getting the mats together just adds to my deserving this and liking it a hell of alot more. I dropped being a fully mastered Alc + Transmutation Master for BS and I'm glad I did.

I'm training to be a better tank and don't know much about it, hopefully this piece is a step in the right direction. Unsure as to whether or not I should go +6 all or +100 hp.

To those that say this is not a good tanking piece you are completely wrong. Lots of the enemies in end game raids are immune to taunt. Therefore it requires a good deal of strength to hold aggro (the +crit doesn't hurt here either). On top of that many of these enemies are lvl 72+ which makes them tough to hit (hit rating becomes crucial). If you use the 2 yellow sockets for +8 def gems you're not taking a big hit there. This piece also has more armor and stamina then any other (I think tanks can use that). The upgrade also gives you a free health pot every half hour. All things considered this is easily the best tanking chest piece available.

For those who prefer to collect the mats themselfs but believe its not costing you anything.

You are so very wrong.

Everthing has a value which depends on what price of your action house at that time.
if you are to collect the materials yourself you could sell them for a cost therefore it would cost you over 1k gold. time farming = cost

I farmed all of these mats in 2 evenings, mostly in Netherstorm, Nagrand, and Shadowmoon Valley. I earned over 150g from other drops that I either vendored or sold.

I socketed 3 Jagged Talasites and enchanted it with +6 all stats, which cost me roughly 150g.

This chestpiece now gives my warrior +2.30% crit (47 crit rating), +640 HP, +74 AP, +1.27% hit, and reduces my physical damage taken by 4.68%.

Not bad for a couple days work. My next project will be Fel Hardened Maul.

Gladiator's Plate Chestpiece - 23 strength, 49 stamina (2 red slots, 1 yellow slot), +.8% hit rating, +1.4% crit rating, +.6% resilence rating.

Breastplate of Kings - +31 strength, +46 stamina (1 blue, 2 yellow), +1.3% hit rating, +1.4% crit rating.

The gladiator chestpiece cannot be upgraded, and you have to save up the points to buy the next stage. The Kings has to be upgraded to get the most out of it. Apples to oranges. Lets look at the next step.

Merciless Gladiator's Plate Chestpiece - +35 strength, +60 stamina (2 red, 1 yellow), +0.9% hit rating, +1.6% crit rating, +0.6% resilence.

Bulwark of Kings - +35 strength, +55 stamina (1 blue, 2 yellow), +1.5% hit rating, +1.7% crit rating, Use: Temporarily Increases Health by 1500 and Strength by 150 for 15 sec.

Hm. At this point, I'm leaning towards the King Bulwark because of the use ability. But lets look at the 3rd stage for both.

Vengeful Gladiator's Plate Chestpiece - +39 strength, +67 stamina (2 red, 1 yellow), +0.8% hit rating, +1.8% crit rating, +0.6% resilence, Equip: Your attacks ignore 84 of your opponent's armor.

Bulwark of the Ancient Kings - +40 strength, +56 stamina (1 blue, 2 yellow), +1.6% hit rating, +1.9% crit rating, Use: Temporarily Increases Health by 1500 and Strength by 150 for 15 sec.

Both require considerable time to acquire, but if I had all the gold and all the arean points in the world, I'd go for BotAK and get 4 of the vengeful stuff to go around it. But, thats just me, and I was bored putting that together.

The armorsmith trainer (Grumnus Steelshaper) in front of the gigantic anvil in the Great Forge in Ironforge can teach you how to make this item. You don't buy the recipe scroll, you just learn it.
