A lot of people seem to take this item lightly. The spear is replaceable and there are items that does what the eye does on a more permanent basis. The tooth however, is irreplaceable - there is nothing else in this game that does what this does. A single crit is meaningless to most hunters. However, for a beastmaster, a pet crit = insta-frenzy. To beastmasters, the trinket text should read : put your pet into a frenzy the very next thing he hits. This trinket = beastmaster hunter pwnage in pvp, and great aggro set up when u are pet tanking, especially if bosses are immune to intimidation.

I see this being very useful for the first attack out of prowl as well. BM + Crit + 50% dmg, followed by insta-frenzy ftw.

With the latest patch in preparation for the release of Burning Crusade, this trinket has really become quite invaluable to those hunters who are dedicated Beast Masters.

With the instant crit effect, we gain two important procs:

1. "Frenzy," which gives your pet an up to 100% chance to gain a 30% attack speed increase for 8 sec after dealing a critical strike.

2. "Ferocious Inspiration," which when your pet scores a critical hit, all party members have all damage increased by up to 3% for 10 sec.

Also, and this has been confirmed in combat, if you have more than one hunter in a party, "Ferocious Inspiration" will stack if both hunters are that far down the BM tree.

As people may have noticed - this trinket changed overnight with the 2.03 patch.

Instead of giving a guaranteed crit on the next strike, it gives crit rating - and thus suffers diminishing returns post-level 60.

Now, the funny thing is that while this may be seen as a nerf... The crit rating is quite enormous (so the trinket should be meaningful a good while after 60) and it lasts until the pet crits!

This is actually a huge buff, because in the past if the pet missed or mob parried/blocked the attack the buff was simply wasted. No escape now for the target!

Only time it's "wasted" now is if the pet was destined to crit anyway on the first strike, and even with heavy beastmaster spec that's on a minority of attacks. Thus this is still the supreme choice - in my opinion anyway.

The change of the trinket for BC indeed buffed it, don't let the change in the description fool you.

1400 crit rating is about 82% additional crit chance at level 70 if I'm not mistaken. And that's added to the already existing crit chance, which is significant for BM spec'ed hunters.

Also, note how the description says the effect will stay until the pet lands a crit. It means it. Literally. The effect is not on a counter and does not time out, short of logging out or the pet being dismissed/killed of course. What this means is you can pop this trinket before a fight, wait for it to cool down before engaging and then have two guaranteed crits one after the other!

I can confirm that the buff lasts through everything except the pet's death -- dismissing or despawning your pet, or logging out, will not remove the buff from the pet. Aside from that, just a basic /agree with all of the above: with a Beast spec this thing is totally full of win.

Edit for WotLK: they've finally nerfed this one-time jewel into mediocrity, as Nuker details below. Such a shame, such a great trinket, something different to help set up a burst of damage, and and no replacement anywhere in game. So long, tooth.

In the 2.1 patch, this item will revert back to its pre-TBC effect, i.e. a guaranteed critical strike on the next attack.

This trinket still has it's use at lvl 70, you can buff the pet with it and switch back to your normal bladefist's breadth, hourclass etc what ever you use. You'll have your pet have the crit opening and still use your favourite +AP/crit/hit trinkets.

As people have already stated, This trinket is really the best choice out of all the quest rewards, and easily the only choice worth picking up if you have any kind of a brain.

The spear is trash, and the eye gets replaced when you hit Outland, The tooth though? You'll never replace it. Ever. It will always be there as a useful little buff, hell, all my stabled pets have the buff on them before I put them away.

It might not seem like all that great of a buff, but it will always have its uses in PvP, and in PvE its worth dropping down to use then switch before a boss to make sure you have your buffs at the start.

I see that no one has added this information so here goes.

This trinket will not give 1 crit but 2 crits IF you use it for opening attacks. The pet uses an attack and their attack skill at the same time (claw, bite etc.). Maybe a bug?

This effect lasts a long time, longer than the cooldown on the trinket in fact.

It's also nice that you can use this trinket, then switch to your normal crit/ap set, and not lose the buff on your pet.

As of patch 2.4 this trinket (still) activates the global cooldown.

This means that you can't use it in any macro such as
/use Devilsaur Tooth
/cast <spell name>

...which is a bit disappointing to some.

I have been logged out for a week and the crit buff is still up on my pet. I don't think it will time out till your pet hits. I'll always use this before a boss fight then switch to my normal trinket. In groups with other hunters my pet is always doing more damage. I haven't seen too many other hunters using this trinket. I think it has been largely overlooked. Any down time like eating or ressing I always pop this on my pet. This trinket gets an A++++.

I dont see whats up with the comments here, this trinket is -terrible- compared to the devilsaur eye. Yeah, your pet will crit his attack, giving him frenzy, double damage, and a ferocious inspiration proc, assuming he wouldnt crit normally, but this comes nowhere close to where 140 ap and 20 hit rating gives you in terms of raw dps, attack power that transfers to your pet as well.

Taking this over the eye is a huge mistake IMO

This is the Beast Mastery hunter reward. It's designed to be used with the Frenzy Talent so the pet can go crazy on the first hit and follow up with multiple hits really fast.

What mod are you using that allows you to hit people with your trinkets?

Anyway.. with beastmastery, and this trinket, you can make sure your pet goes crazy almost every time. But also. Using this when a pet is prowling, it would probably be able to hit maybe 350-400 dmg with a bite attack when coming out of stealth. And then go nuts.

This trinket's nice, but I'd prefer the royal seal of eldre'thalas to this. Being a BM specced hunter the extra damage off the crit and frenzy is pretty good actually, that's 150 extra damage, but the two minute cooldown is what bugs me. The royal seal gives you a 7dps bonus, and on average fights in the bg last about 20 seconds if not more. This is enough time for the damage to equal that of the trinket, plus you don't have to worry about it being on cooldown. In addition, you're banking on your cat being in stealth for the trinket, and most people will tell you that prowl is hugely inconvenient in bgs since you almost always have your pet a few miles behind you when you get into combat. Less testing with duels, more testing in real PvP is what i say.

The point of this item is to get your pet to get a crit, do the extra damage, then go into frenzy (if your BM) for 8s, good pet opener.

-ONLY Hunters. . . .. sheesh. . .
-It works even better with prowl (cat stealth)
-It works even better with BW (200% damage)
-It does not work on YOUR attacks, not even you special Night Elves. . .
-It only applies to the NEXT pet attack
-It has a 2-min cooldown

Almost everyone keeps saying that the eye is the only reward really worth it.

Well i think there could be another purpose for the tooth besides prowl.

If youre in a normal Dungeon-Situation and you come to a group of nonelite Mobs which get normally AE�d you always have the Problem of: "who takes the aggro first"

The Mage (if he is a clever one) shouldnt start with the AE, because of his low Armor and HP. If you (as a Hunter) start with your AE, you get the Aggro, but this isnt very good either. Well Blizzard made us a Pet that can be a good Solution for this Problem: The Gorilla and his AE Stomp.

But

If the Stomp doesnt Crit (I dont know if he is able to crit) the aggro doesnt last long on the pet it switches fast to the hunter or the Mage or whoever casts the next AE.

My idea in this is: What if the Stomp would crit? The aggro wouldnt switch that fast i guess...

Ive got my gorilla just for a view hours so i dont have very much xp with his AE.

Does anyone know if Stomp is able to crit?

After thinking this over for a month (I have done the quest just not handed it in yet I wanted to see the new bc talents 1st) I have found that there are a few +attack power trinkets already available, Earthstrike being the best.

Royal Seal of Eldre'Thalas is better than Devilsaur Eye imo simply due to the fact that is +48 attack power on EQUIP. So you will do the same if not more damage over time than someone with the Eye. The eye is +150 ap a hit over 20 seconds with 2 minutes cd - they will just do higher burst damage than you over a shorter space of time. You will have +48ap a hit indefinately.

The tooth gurantees a pet crit which is great with prowl and also triggers frenzy which when prepared with intimidation and bestial wrath makes a very good high damage high threat pet opener, there is no trinket like it in the game and you only get one chance to get it.

Like I said before there are better attack power trinkets out there and the tooth is so rare that missing out on it might prove regretful later.

Having said that you could use the Devilsaur Eye + Earthstrike at the same time for the remaining 10secs of thier duration (10sec shared CD) to accumulate over 400ap for 10 seconds.

That's a lot of damage potential in 10 seconds, however the choice is yours, choose what works for you and your play style.

Only good if used coming out of prowl making it situational. If your BM spec, your pet is gonna be critting like crazy anyways.

In BGs, I personally prefer sending my pet in from long distance, making dash more useful than prowl.

I'm an Orc BM Hunter, so popping Devilsaur Eye + Blood Fury gives me close to 400 AP every 2 minutes. Combine that with The Beast Within improved Bestial Wrath and Rapid Fire and you have one hell of a dmg output...

The chance to hit is getting changed to hit rating, but its equivalent so you still get the same benefits with the Eye. There may not be another trinket like the Tooth in the game, but there are so many other trinkets that are more useful including the Eye. Now if the Tooth gave a constant 140 crit rating to pet (10% chance to crit) for 15 secs with 2 minute cooldown, then I would consider it a trinket worth using.

After doing my Hunter ST quest and choosing this item as the reward (I figured, "Hey, the attack power trinket will get quickly owned in Outland, but I don't see many pet modifier trinkets out there"), I can tell you it's really not worth it.

1400 crit rating sounds like it should be a guaranteed critical strike, right? Not even close!

I fired this off and had my pet attack - immediately went 3 whole battles in a row without critting ONCE. In fact the trinket cooled down before the pet got any critical hits at all.

Either the trinket is bugged and has no effect at all (seems likely) or it was intended to suck this badly. Get the Devilsaur eye.

Can you use the trinket, then change another trinket to replace the devilsaur tooth you just used and gain the benefit of both the tooth's crit buff and whatever benefit the other trinket may give?

Does anyone know this?

Because if you can do that its awesome, because the buff is not time limited! Your pet's next attack could be like three hours from the time you give the buff!

Can anyone confirm if you can use this trinket like I describe below?

Yes, even if u switch out the trinket, the buff stays. You can even mount (dismissing your pet). The buff doesnt seem to have any time limit. If you decide to keep the trinket in for a fight, you can prebuff the pet, wait a bit for it to cooldown, then buff the pet again in combat. If your BM spec, you pet will be going nuts with frenzy effect. I have a ton of trinkets, im an engineer, and im surprised that i leave this one in a slot most of the time. It's nice for BM hunters.

mm im a BM hunter but im goinng for the attack power. 150 attack power is A LOT! and for 20 seconds? taht kicks asse. im not saying this is bad but i was thinking and my pets crit so many times its useless to ask for this, even tho i know it would be good cus i have a stealthing cat and stealth+enrage+intimidation+ improved hunters mark+ this guaranteed crit=gg about 300-400 dmg but still 150 atck power beats it... and im a bm/marks hybrid anyway.

If you are a pvp freak(like me)and your a BM spec then this one could be one of the best.I my self use a gorrila so the critc thing isnt much for me but my friend who uses a warpstalker has a very good use on this thing he uses it wait for the cooldown to be gone then when someone takes the flag of us(talking about warsong gulch now) he uses beastial wrath,intimedation his pet will warp to the guy making a critc for a good amount of damage and stunning him then my gorrila come's here to stunning and my other friend uses his boar with the trinket making a a critc frenzy of 4 critc after eachother and a 6 or 9 second stun if i remember the stun time of intimedation(havent played wow for some time) you will get the enemy dead in his tracks. it can be a very good trinket if you use the good pet with a warpstalker,boar or cat it will be a very good thing as if it hits it will do a critc that triggers frenzy and feral insperation(the one that increases all your damage done) it would be a killer frenzy. if you use a pet that attacks fast(with the cobra reflexes as all pet attack speed is normalized to 2.00 sec) this could be meening that the pet has a 1.23 attack speed doing the maths in my head you will have a pet that does damage fast in combonation with bestial wrath. in the old time you would have broken tooth and with this thing it would have a vey nice damage and speed but that was before the burning crusade. so if you use a boar,cat or warpstalker with the cobra reflexes and your a BM spec and a pvp lover get this one you will rock the skies especialy if you use it twice in one battle then or you die if you did something horribly wrong or kill them without having to shoot a bullet or arrow atleast that is in mine experience

Ok put your cat in prowl, Beastial Wrath, and then activate this, then hit Kill Command. The number will be mind boggling. your pet crits alot as a BM but you can activate this before using something like BW, prowl, kill command combo for a huge amount of damage. This if used by a non BM or someone who just spams it is not good but if you time it right you could near 1 hit that clothie or decimate that boss's health. So all in all think if your really going to use this will you equip it all the time? I certainly would but I'm full BM at level 51 lol

this is definitely the trinket of choice. you can use it to prebuff and switch it out. so it can be worth using at any level, if you know you'll be idle for a bit.

it also causes my pet to crit twice most of the time, because of lag. once on the regular attack, and once on the first special, as long as he has enough focus to use the special at the same time.

it doesn't work with spells like lightning breath, even though they can crit. i think it works only with physical attacks.

some setups can ruin the double crit. example: if you use lightning breath and bite at the same time (without dive), you will use a second lightning breath before you can bite, and the bite will come too late to get the buff

Is the tooth suppose to give your pet 100% crit for next melee?
I have a king bangalesh pet at lvl 56, i'm 58 now but i can often see like 4-8 non crit hits from start of battle after using this trinket. doesn't seems to make much differences using this or not to me.

To all considering getting this trinket, do not select it as your quest reward! It has been broken for months and there is no sign that this will ever change.

Great, spent all weekend in random pickup groups, unsuccesfully trying to get this item, guess I'll move on and hope Blizz at least adds a new direct to pet affecting trinket with TBC.

This trinket isnt as bad as some people might think. A BM-hunter can get Frenzy for his pet, and it speeds up his pets attack speed when the pet crits, this trinket makes it proc when you want it to :)

And at lvl 50-55 you might not have any good trinkets anyways.

Its fixed in 2.1 patch in 13.4. Now the next strike is guaranteed to crit.

The buff your pet gets from this trinket, "Primal Instinct", stays even if you remove the trinket or switch the trinket. It seems to have unlimited duration just like rogues Cold Blood, and it stays if your pet despawns - it even stays if you log out or disconnect (haven't tried for more than 15 minutes yet). Also the CD on the trinket starts to tick already after you buff your pet with it. So if CD is ready - you can trigger it again as soon as the pet has attacked and used it up.

I am happy I took this item instead of the eye, since this will be useful when leveling - as I usually level with beastmaster. This item will basically be useful at level 70 as well in contrast to the other 2 items. Two words - Ferocious Inspiration - makes it useful both solo and in parties. ^^

No, BW doesn't break stealth. ^^ It's a great thing, especially if you got a slower cat with more burst damage. All in all though I'd tak eye over this because if you're BM spec you have 15% to crit for your pets, and +150ap and 2% hit seems more reasonable IMHO.

Seems like a great trinket to activate right before a boar charge or cat stealth attack
Since the charge (and 1st hit from prowl) greatly boosts damage, and this makes it an instant crit...thats a big burst of damage on the first hit. Great for pve threat and pvp burst
