I just helped a raid group kill Araj, and got everyone pissed off at me because I had tagged him (he spawned right on top of me while we were waiting, and I reacted) and when he died I was the only one who could loot his Phylactery. Apparantly this group had tried about five times already and were never able to loot it.

For the last try, they decided to split into normal groups (non-raid) and kill him twice, once for each group. When he died, everyone, even the group who hadn't tagged him, was able to loot the Phylactery.

So:

It doesn't matter who kills Araj; the loot isn't bound to whomever tags him.

Do -not- be in a raid group when you kill him. Normal groups are okay, but raids won't work.

It's easier to kill him if you've gotten Attuned Dampener from Chromie, but not necessary.

Hope this helps answer a few questions.

As with all quest items it has 100% drop rate when doing the quest.

I just solo'd Ajaj for the Scarab (I'm a new Lvl 63 Mage). I had average equipment on and was 100% duro. When Araj dies an item appears on the ground. I looted it, mounted up and left town quickly before any respawns appeared. I went down only minimally to 97% duro at quest completion. Recived 14,300 XP at turn-in to the apothecary at the Western Plaguelands camp.

Note: I also solo'd him when I was lvl 62 for the other Araj quest - "Alas, Andorhal."

Strategy: I did not clear the entire area... just half of the circle of skeletons/ghouls around the perimeter circle that surrounds Araj. Then I pulled Araj's guards.

Then I hit Araj...he spawned some fighters but I just did a freeze and AOE'd them with Arcane Explosions. To be safe you can try to clear the whole area...but they will respawn...so I only tried to clear a semi-circle around him and stay on the cleared side. Make sure though no matter which method you use, you look around for the Patrols on the roadways into the area where Araj is and clear them as well.

It was NOT necessary to have the "Attuned Dampener" at my level but you will probably need it if you are a lower level. It weakens Araj significantly so he becomes an easier kill.

You get the dampener by completing a simple/fast quest for Chromie called "Counting out time." Chromie is located in the same town, at the Inn, 2nd floor (39,66).
