For the ultimate solo-class. Pick a Hunter. The fact that hunters have a pet who can tank, and the hunter itself who can heal the tank and do damage, makes them almost like a two-man team. Hunter is what I'd pick for a newbie out to learn WoW. It's also, if observant, a nice view to see how other classes behave, like the healers and tanks.
Otherwise, you could take the Druid, who can heal, tank, dps or cast magics.
Firstly, a hunter. Secondly, a druid.

Speaking as another casual player who just started playing Wow, I'd ignore the advice that you
have
to invest a healthy amount of time in it to get any enjoyment out of it.
I only play a couple of hours on weekdays, and slightly more on the weekend. Heck, there are days that go by where I don't play at all. The result is a level 45 mage decked out mostly in greens after 3 months. But hey, I'm having fun, and that's the most important thing,

I agree as long as you're having fun the levels will come.
As to a good character to solo, the above advice is pretty good. I'd say Druid myself because they have a variety of abilities, the class is interesting all the way through, and they are very self reliant.
A warlock is a second option, but note when things go wrong, they go very wrong as you're in cloth armor and no real means to heal yourself. You do, however, have spells to allow you to escape.

I also am married with a full time job and so far the best soloing class for me has be the Rogue. Stealth and poisons help out a lot. Not having to fight every mob you see is a real big plus.

roll a hybrid class, healing helps a lot when you start learning the game, or roll DPS and dranei, they have a racial HoT.
the best i would recommend would be a NE druid, roll feral for catform DPS

Levelling and being 70 are two totally different games. Most of the time, the fun is when you level, not when you're 70. To raid seriously you'd need to invest a lot of time but whether you'd get fun out of it is another matter (I used to raid hardcore before BC and stopped since then due to the change in raid caps which I found dumb and which took out most of the enjoyment..). But to level up you dont need to invest any specific time, so yeah don't worry about this.

He did mention he was solo-ing :P
I'm not sure that I'd be raiding when I hit 70. Seems like too much work for minimal returns. Of course, I don't think I could even if I wanted to, other commitments and all that.
