Protection Paladin Tank Best in Slot (BiS) Phase 2 Gear Guide - TBC Classic

By Wowhead Updated: 2026/05/12

Best In Slot Gear for Protection Paladin Tank in Phase 2Serpentshrine Cavernthere is no true BiS for tanking. When working on your tanking build, the minimum goals should be the following:

Immunity to Critical Hits (490 Defense)

Immunity to Crushing Blows (+102.4% Miss/Dodge/Parry/Block with Holy Shield)

10k+ HP with full enchants/gems, unbuffed

Crystalforge Armor (T5)

Set Bonuses:

(2) Increased Retribution Aura: This set bonus is primarily oriented towards increasing threat generation when AoE tanking. With Improved Righteous Fury, this set bonus increases the threat generated from Retribution Aura by an additional +28 threat. In the majority of raid tanking scenarios, it is recommended to use Devotion Aura instead for damage mitigation, so this set bonus has a fairly limited amount of use cases in raids, particularly for trash packs in Hyjal Summit, boosting in low-level dungeons, or farming large packs of mobs in the open world.

(4) Holy Shield Block Value: Pushing for this set bonus is NOT recommended. The damage mitigation provided by this set bonus is extremely small and will pale in comparison to damage taken in raids and heroic dungeons.

Justicar Armor (T4)

Justicar ArmorJusticar ChestguardJusticar ShoulderguardsSet Bonuses:

(2) Increased Right./Venge./Blood: Heavily recommended. This set bonus increases the damage of your damage-based seals by 10%. It is highly recommended that you maintain this set bonus in Phase 2 for maximizing single-target threat generation.

(4) Increased Holy Shield: This set bonus is useful for threat generation in both single-target and AoE tanking scenarios, although not as essential as the 2-piece bonus. With Improved Righteous Fury and Improved Holy Shield, the +15 Damage from this bonus increases the threat output of Holy Shield by approximately +46 per block.

Righteous Armor (D3)

Set Bonuses:

(2) Consecration Discount: The mana savings provided by this set bonus can be useful for dungeon trash and heroic dungeons by increasing the time it takes to run out of mana from doing ability rotations.

(4) Reduced Righteous Defense Cooldown: Not recommended. This set bonus reduces the cooldown of Righteous Defense from 15 seconds to 13 seconds. In the majority of tanking scenarios, taunts should only be used as a last resort to regain aggro on mobs not targeting the tank.

You don't need to be a Blacksmith to wear the belt. It is BOE. You just need a BS to get the pattern and craft one for you (using raid drop Nether Vortex mats).

Comment by Mastalock

Commander's Badge is listed as a stam trinket, but Netherwing dailies were not announced for P2, only Ogri'la and Shatari Skyguard

Comment by jcadduono

Why would you put a +12 stamina gem in the Crystalforge Faceguard when you can throw a Glowing Nightseye in there and still get the 12 stamina from the socket bonus along with an extra 5 spell damage?

Comment by Atraira

you have a bunch of phase 3 stuff in your stam trinket list (darkmoon cards, netherwing rep) and don't have non-engi options like the spyglass from ssc

Comment by orionshock

Enchant Chest - Defense is not a P2 Enchant either....

Comment by Ambrusius

People may want to look at the rings from scale of the sands, that can be optained from the quest to kill KT/vashj

Comment by RocketPocket

For helms what’s better overall? T5 helm or goggles?

Comment by Littlestomp

surely veteran's lamellar bracers are better for threat in phase 2?

Comment by Thicknumbers

Tome of Fiery redemption is better than eye of mag in every scenario, utilizing sense undead casts during rotation downtime to maximize procs. The only time eye of mag is "better" than tome of fiery redemption is when you proc tome of fiery redemption pre-pull and switch to eye of mag right away, and this only works in short fights (trash)
