Best In Slot Gear for Protection Paladin Tank in Phase 1there is not "one" bis list for tanks.When working on your tanking build, the minimum goals should be the following:

Immunity to Critical Hits - Crit Cap/ Crit Immunity (490 Defense)

Immunity to Crushing Blows - Crush Cap / Avoidance Cap (+102.4% Miss/Dodge/Parry/Block with Bouclier sacré)

10k+ HP with full enchants/gems, unbuffed

The recommended Heroic dungeons for Badge farming are The Mechanar, The Steamvaults, The Slave Pens, Auchenai Crypts, and Hellfire Ramparts. These recommendations are based on their relatively fast clear times and having slightly forgiving trash packs. Do not underestimate the trash mobs and bosses in Heroics by any means, however.

Level 72 is the max level that mobs and bosses can be in Heroics, so gearing for uncrushability is unnecessary. However, one must try to have at least 485 Defense in order to be immune to Critical Hits for heroics, as normal hits from individual mobs range from 500 damage upwards of 8000 damage, in which case a single critical hit may one-shot tanks.

Prioritize maximizing your HP pool and stamina. Mobs in heroics are numerous and hit extremely hard, so tanks will be taking lots of damage repeatedly. Having a high HP pool allows the healer to react better to the tank's damage intake, as well as increase the time it takes for the tank to die.

Make sure your group composition has fear-prevention and crowd control (CC) capabilities. A bad group composition will quickly put an end to heroic runs. Tanking an entire pack of heroic mobs will more than likely result in a quick and painful death.

It is highly recommended to have a Mage in your group as they can Métamorphose enemies to CC deadly targets. Shamans can use Totem de Séisme to break fears on your group. Shadow Priests can Contrôle mental enemies to great effect. Priests can keep Gardien de peur up on tanks. Hunters can drop Piège de givre which allows Paladin tanks to kite enemies using Consécration while ranged DPS take them down. Warlocks can Peur enemies; however, feared enemies may often run into other enemy packs, resulting in chain pulls and wipes, so exercise caution on fear positioning.

Protection spec isn't viable at all for PVP unless it's against rogues and maybe fury warriors with one handers.

None of the PVP gear supports protection spec in PVP or PVE.

DISCLAIMER: After some discussion, I would like to state that this post reflects only my personal opinion that is based on my experience in the original TBC and on beta. In this post I am only voicing this opinion - that is "gearing for survival should take precedent, only after you need more threat and you have no problem surviving, you should gear for it at the expense of defensive stats". So take my hard stances with a grain of salt.

Probably the most important thing at the start. For gems the rule of thumb is always socket pure stamina, cases where def/stam or spelldmg/stam gems are better are very few (only if the socket bonus is worth it). Pure spelldmg gems should never be used unless you're building a pure threat gear/gear piece. They have no place in regular gear. The socket choices in this bis list are questionable at the very least.

Helm - T4 is the best hands down - agree.
Shoulders - T4 are the best hands down (it's in big part due to the block rating they provide which you fail to mention), green gem here is a good choice.
Back - yup, Devilshark Cape
Chest - T4 is the best hands down (it's in big part due to the block rating they provide which you fail to mention) and just gem it pure stamina. Panzar is barely better in defensive stats than the T4 so if given the choice go T4 - agree here.
Wrists - Bracers of the Green Fortress are bis until Void Reaver bracers (T5), Bracers of Dignity can be considered a threat option, Vanbraces are not that bad but not good either.
Hands - T4 gloves are not worth getting, maybe after everyone has them for threat set. Maiden gloves are best for uncrush and if you can't get the ones from Kazzak they are the best choice for EH also. Given the choice, I would get the ones from Kazzak if not struggling with uncrush.
Belt - Crimson Girdle of the Indomitable is the best, no discussion here, two stamina gems. Girdle of Valorous Deeds can be used in threat set.
Legs - Wrynn Dynasty Greaves are the best defensive legs, no discussion here, three stamina gems. Timewarden's Leggings are second best. T4 can be used in threat set. Using the T4 would cost you over 500hp for the benefit of 39 spelldmg, your flask options are 500hp +10def vs 85 spell dmg (or 70 for old flask). You can always compare your gear choices to this ratio.
Boots - Boots of Elusion and Battlescar Boots are both viable depending on what you need, Boots of the Righteous Path are not viable outside of threat set.
Neck - Barbed Choker of Discipline is the best. I would list pure spellpower pieces separately, as they can be used only in special sets and circumstances.
Rings - Elementium Band of the Sentry and Violet Signet of the Great Protector are the best nothing to disagree about here. But again - I would list pure spellpower pieces separately, they can be used only in special sets and circumstances.
Trinkets - Darkmoon Cards were added in 2.1, list should reflect that for now, but the Vengeance is the single best trinket there is, definitely not only "viable".
Pocket Watch is definitely useful but it's not all-purpose best trinket. Stamina trinket is better for survival if you're already uncrushable.

Eye of Magtheridon seems definitely very strong for paladins sustained threat, I haven't seen any math on this but I can see it being the best from this perspective. However, you would have to take it from casters that may need it more (not sure about this, we will have to wait for more math) and personally, I wouldn't do that. Icon of Silver Crescent may not be as strong as Eye from a point of view of sustained threat but it gives you the ability to control the use (with wings etc) which is a very big deal for a tank. Icon should be one of the first badge purchases (after libram and shield) and should definitely be listed here. When you're geared enough to consider using two threat trinkets, then I would go for Eye of Magtheridon. That said...if I could get it, in pug or gdkp I would - the trinket is awesome.

Gnomeregan Auto-Blocker 600 is crap apart from block set - I would remove it.

If I had to list bis trinkets, it would be: Moroes' Lucky Pocket Watch + Goblin Rocket Launcher + Icon of Silver Crescent.
Figurine of the Colossus for uncrush and Adamantite Figurine for defense if needed.

Weapons - Gavel of Unearthed Secrets is crap, it's too slow, please remove it before someone buys it. Gladiator's Gavel is the best if you can get it, the extra stamina puts it over the Gruul sword. Other than that... yeah the Bloodmaw Magus-Blade is the best but I'm not sure about getting it over your dps, if they all have Prince dagger then sure - if not I would let them have it and stay on Stormcaller or Continuum Blade - but get the first Fang of Leviathan in T5.

Shields - yup, Gruul shield > Nightbane. However, if you have a warrior tank in your raid, let him have the first one for the hit rating. You can live with the Nightbane shield or badge shield.

Librams - all hail Libram of Repentance, your first 15 badges go here, get asap.

If you want some more information and numbers you can check my personal spreadsheet, there might still be some errors in there, the comments are not complete or very well thought out and it doesn't include wowhead links yet, but it gives a very nice picture of all the individual gear pieces so you can make your own decision.

Just remember, your priorities don't change from pre-raid gearing, get your 490 defense first, then get 102.4 combined avoidance+block+miss (always keep this), then go for stamina, then avoidance, then comes the block value and extra block rating (mostly for aoe tanking). You can focus on threat (spell dmg, rest of the stats are pretty much worthless in comparison) once you have no trouble surviving - generally I would say threat after avoidance, before BV/BR. Also, spell dmg flask and oil go a long way, it's better than compromising your gear with threat pieces early on.

Threat is never the right answer if you plan on tanking bosses as we get enough from our set pieces. If you're a trash tank or farming then pig out on spellpower.

Rings ... Please use avoidance rings. Bonus Armor is for bears and to a much lesser extent warriors (yes I know the EJ armor spreadsheet)

Thanks for the guide, I see there are a few mitigation capes. Could you also include threat oriented options? For instance, Drapé rubis du mystosophe. Some of them are mentioned on the Phase 2 BiS guide.

Question, why isnt Drapé du vertueux on the list? I would think the +43 holy it would be better then Ruby Drape of the Mysticant Ruby Drape of the Mysticant for Threat, no?
