I just did a 10 man naxx last night with a priest and a shaman and placed less than 1% lower then the priest and I was dead on the last boss fight (plus minus guy... long story as to why died but yeah). I've been practicing being a little less aggressive with my overheals to compensate for a mana nerf and honestly noticed very little difference in effective heals. Our group has very good tanks and great dps so really its ok to just use FoL on nearly all trash parts and save your HL for the harder hitting bosses.
I usually keep bacon up all the time simply because plds have a stupid amount of mana getting abilities. Also sacred shield to targets that are normally taking some heat / tanks because the FoL crit bonus is delicious.
Odd thing too, im not sure if anyone else does / i'm a nab for doing but on bosses that lack AoE sych as the giant spider fight and the plus minus fight minibosses you can actually get into range because of their huge hitboxes and swing at them as you cast for a good 800 mana a swing. I guess it's not a good idea to attack from the front but really makes things insanely easy on keeping mana if you can actually get 1-2 swings every now and then for an extra 1800 mana(but then i also judge/ hit rats before fights to prep the haste).
oh fun thing I was the raid healer for the zombie chow boss and our MT died with the dog having less then 10% and i got to kite around the zombies and stunned them with holy wrath.

You're only a nub for doing it if the tank or your assigned people die because you were too busy meleeing. On fights like Deconstructor in 10 man Ulduar, I tell my healers to go attack the heart to regain mana from JoW since the raid isn't taking damage.
aye shoulda said it more in a sense that if you CAN take a swipe at the mob and not endanger yourself / others then go for it... its great for mana regen. The best was I got a scarab on the first boss in the arachnid quarters and kept him nearly the entire time because I can barely hurt him but I stayed at 100% and with conc aura you don't lose casting speed.

We were talking about healing this very fight just yesterday. One of the designers had an interesting experience. Their first Holy priest had much larger healing (total and effective) on the fight than their second Holy priest, so they asked the second priest to go Shadow. They kept wiping. They then swapped them, and made the star Holy priest go Shadow. The second Holy priest’s healing was much lower, but they won on the first try. The second priest just had better timing and cast the right spell at the right moment, even though his total and effective healing was lower overall. The moral of the story is meters are very useful, but like any tool, their ability to measure what happens in reality has limitations. In my experience, players put too much emphasis on them, especially for healing.
The problem I find with this: there are FAR too many variables to consider here.
For example: The tank could have taken bigger spikes of damage from bad luck with avoidance on the third fight, and therefore the first priest showed as having higher heals in the second fight despite the wipe.
And that's just one example of all the crazy variables in a fight like that. Now, granted, I agree that healing meters are not at all a good sign of a healer's abilities, but that's not purely because HPS doesn't really matter -- it also has a lot to do with the fact that, with so many people and different things going on, numbers are always going to come out different.
