I'll let you know a secret about wow players. They hardly care what class you want to play. That being said as far as my knowledge go Boomkins are a bit squishy in pvp. I don't pvp myself with my druid but I have read allot of comments that boomkins fail if they don't open the fight. I have done better in a dual with feral spec then my boomkin. Boomkin +2200 spell feral 31k hp in bear form to give you an idea about gear(armory is out of date and account is off atm)
Read the pvp posts in the druid form before deciding to level your druid

If you really want to get a feel for the class set yourself up on the PTR and play around with one of the premade 80 druids and play around with spec's.

Well I can offer my suggestions as to what I did with my druid. If you have access to Heirloom gear it obviously makes things easier.
If your friend is taking a Pally, as long as it's not Holy, Ret and Prot can AoE grind with amazing ease. Feral requires a much different gear set then Balance/Resto. I chose to go Balance/Resto (a spec for each at 40) because for most of your 1-79 career, you can easily use the same gear (Int/Spirit/SP/Crit) If you want to play a Boom, go for it, you'll easily be able to DPS and heal your friends Pally ( or yourself) without mana issues.
At the end of the day, whichever you enjoy more is the spec you should go with. Druid was a really hard class for me to play until 40. It's not that the class was broken for me, I just went Balance and had to stop and drink non stop.
TL,DR: Use your friends Pally for AoE grinding (Or single target PvP DPS) Take the healing duty from him.
